December 2026 calendar in Mexico: events, festivities and date plans
December is Mexico’s most social month: fairs, pilgrimages, posadas, family dinners and end-of-year parties. It is also a month of packed schedules, traffic, reunited families and slower replies. This calendar gathers the dates we found in the press and travel guides, with links to our city date guides and holiday etiquette advice. Dates are for 2026 and several come from a single source: confirm before planning or booking.
In short
- The firmest dates: FIL Guadalajara (28 Nov–6 Dec), Virgin of Guadalupe (Saturday 12 Dec), posadas (16–24 Dec), Night of the Radishes in Oaxaca (Wednesday 23 Dec), Christmas Eve (24) and New Year.
- Many lights and fairs stay open until January: Luztopía in Monterrey and Brilla Fest in Atlixco are examples (dates to confirm).
- From 24 to 26 December almost everyone is with family: replies come slower and couple plans cluster on the 31st.
- Book hotels, restaurants and transport early for Christmas Eve and New Year, and move up Valentine’s Day 2027 if you plan to travel.
01How to use this calendar
We mark three kinds of plan: public daytime plans (fairs and exhibitions, good for relaxed dates), community festivities (posadas, pilgrimages, calendas, closer to family and faith) and end-of-year trips (getaways for couples who already know each other). Sources are named in the text, and anything that rests on a single report is marked to confirm.
- Before suggesting a date, ask the other person how they usually spend December. Some have family commitments almost every day.
- Choose public, daytime places for new dates; leave parties and trips for when there is trust.
- Have a plan B for rain, cold or crowds. See rainy-day date ideas and cultural dates.
December rewards people who plan calmly and ask before suggesting.

28 to 31 December. 28 December is Día de los Santos Inocentes (a day of pranks, general calendar date). The 31st concentrates dinners, toasts and couple trips: see the New Year guides by city.
03Which plan fits which stage of a relationship
Not every December plan suits every stage. A simple way to choose:
- First or second date: a daytime fair or exhibition, like the FIL or an early-evening lights stroll; a public place, limited time and your own transport. See the first-date plan.
- Once there is trust: a posada with mutual friends, a seasonal dinner or a day trip to a town with fairs. Always ask the host first if you are bringing someone.
- For couples who have already talked it over: a New Year getaway or a long weekend, with a hotel booked through official channels and a clear plan for both.
- If one of you is away: suggest a video call on 23 or 26 December, when there are usually fewer commitments, and leave the in-person date for January.
If you are unsure what suits, ask with a simple message: "December is packed; which day suits you best to meet calmly?". And remember that saying no to a plan is never rude: people in December often juggle work parties, family meals, travel and school schedules, so a polite "not that day, but how about the following week?" keeps the door open without any pressure on either side, and it gives both people room to enjoy the season.
04Lights and fairs by city
Each city has its own lights, markets and Christmas strolls. These guides explain what is on, how to get there, how to avoid crowds and how to suggest it as a date:
- Lights and Christmas in Mexico City
- Lights and Christmas in Monterrey
- Lights and Christmas in Guadalajara
- Lights and Christmas in Puebla
- Lights and Christmas in Querétaro
For towns with fairs and day trips, read seasonal fairs and festivals and lights and illuminated villages.
05New Year: getaways and dinners
For couples who already know each other and have talked it over, 31 December is the most booked date of the year. There are guides for city dinners and plans and for beach and town getaways:
- In the city: Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara and Oaxaca.
- At the beach: Cancún and the Riviera Maya, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta.
- In towns and colonial cities: San Miguel de Allende and Mérida.
If you are looking for winter whales, see La Paz and Los Cabos. And if you are already thinking about 14 February 2027, there are Valentine’s Day plans by city. Book early: year-end occupancy is usually very high.
06Holiday dating etiquette: gifts, family and replies
December also changes the unwritten rules of dating someone. These guides help avoid mistakes:
- Gifts. What to give (and what not to) early in a relationship: Christmas gifts and dating, alongside the seasonal gift tips.
- Family. Meeting the family on Christmas Eve: Christmas dinner and family.
- Messages. Why replies take longer and how not to take it badly: slow replies at Christmas.
- Distance. If each of you spends the holidays in another city or country: Christmas long-distance.
- Scams. Fraud involving gifts, travel and offers rises in December: see seasonal scams and the red flags.
07If you live alone and want to meet someone discreetly
December can feel lonelier when everyone seems to have plans. Learn more on the home page and in meeting people respectfully.
Hours, programs and notices change: confirm everything with each organizer, hotel or restaurant and on official sources before you go. We have no relationship with any of the places mentioned and the listings are not paid.
Frequently asked questions
What are the key December dates in Mexico?
FIL Guadalajara (28 November to 6 December), Virgin of Guadalupe (Saturday 12), posadas (16 to 24), Night of the Radishes in Oaxaca (Wednesday 23), Christmas Eve (24), Christmas (25) and New Year (31). Several come from a single source: confirm.
Which dates should I avoid for a first date?
The most family-centered: 12 December near pilgrimage sites, 24 and 25 December, and 31 December. First dates work best on an ordinary day, by day and in a public place.
When should I book for New Year?
As early as possible. Beach destinations and colonial cities have high year-end occupancy, and dinners usually need reservations. Ask for clear cancellation policies and book through official channels.
What if the other person replies slowly at Christmas?
Do not read it as disinterest: nearly everyone is with family or traveling. Send a short, kind message and pick the plan back up after the 26th. See the slow-replies guide.
Can foreign men attend posadas and local parties?
Yes, with an invitation and respect. Ask the host before bringing someone, offer to bring something and arrange your own transport. See the posadas guide.
