New Year's Eve in Mexico City 2026: dinners, Reforma and an unhurried 1 January

Mexico City welcomes the new year with a huge public party on Reforma, multi-course dinners at restaurants and rooftops, and a very quiet 1 January when much of the city opens late or not at all. This guide is for two people who already know each other and want to spend Thursday night, 31 December 2026, together; it is not a first-date plan. It collects what the press reported about New Year 2025, what has not yet been announced for 2026, and practical advice on booking, getting around and staying safe. Everything about 2026 still needs to be confirmed.

In short

  • At the end of September 2026 the city government had not yet announced the venue, artists or hours for the 2026 public celebration; in 2025 it was a free electronic-music party on Reforma, 6 pm to 2 am. Confirm the official announcement in December.
  • Multi-course dinners and rooftops usually have fixed seatings and little flexibility: ask about cancellation, what the final price includes and whether there is a second seating before you pay anything.
  • With road closures, special Metro hours and few taxis, the simplest plan is to sleep near where you dine, agree on a meeting point and head home without rushing.
  • 1 January is a quiet day: a late breakfast, a short walk and plans with a reservation; confirm what is open, because many places close or shorten their hours.

01A night for people who already know each other

This guide assumes you already know the person you will welcome the year with and that you both chose the plan. New Year's Eve adds pressure (the reservation, the hour, the toast), so for meeting someone for the first time a daytime coffee or lunch in a public place is lighter; our first-date guide and the one on consent on a first date help you prepare that conversation.

  • Dates. 31 December 2026 is a Thursday and 1 January 2027 a Friday. Many companies take a long weekend or end-of-year break, so traffic and hotel occupancy can change from one day to the next.
  • Two possible plans. One with atmosphere (the public party or a rooftop with music) and one quiet (early dinner, a toast and a walk). Talk about which you prefer before booking and keep the second as plan B.
  • By mutual agreement. An invitation does not oblige anyone to stay until dawn, to drink alcohol or to share a hotel; each person can say no or change the plan without giving a reason.

For the rest of the season's plans, see the December calendar and the guide to Christmas away from home.

If the plan does not turn out as you hoped, a good dinner and a short walk are still a great way to begin the year.

02The public party on Reforma: what is known and what is not

In 2025 the Mexico City government organised a free electronic-music party on Paseo de la Reforma, with DJ sets by MGMT, Arca and Kavinsky, among others, from 6 pm to 2 am on 1 January. El Financiero reported it on 28 December 2025, and N+ confirmed on 29 December that Reforma had road closures. Mexico Travel & Leisure (28 September 2026) places the 2025 celebration at the Ángel de la Independencia roundabout and counts 1,360 police officers in the operation.

For 2026 we found no official announcement yet. Mexico Travel & Leisure noted on 28 September 2026 that the government had not released a venue, artists or hours, and that these are usually announced in December. Confirm the programme on the city's official channels a week before you go.

  • Zócalo. According to N+ (29 December 2025), the Festival Luces de Invierno concerts in the Zócalo were suspended on 31 December and 1 January 2025-2026; only the Nochebuena trees and the Monumental Nativity scene could be visited. We do not know what will happen in 2026: confirm.
  • What to bring and what to avoid. The same September 2026 source mentions that glass, sharp objects, large bags and belts were discouraged or banned in 2025. The list can change, so check the current one.
  • Crowds. At a mass event, carry little cash, a copy of your ID or passport, a power bank and layers of clothing. Agree on a meeting point before going in, in case phone signal drops.
  • If you dislike crowds. The public party is optional. A dinner with a view and a quiet toast work just as well.

03Dinners and rooftops: book early and ask the right questions

Restaurants and hotels usually put together special New Year menus, with fixed times and sometimes two seatings. To get an idea of what is on offer, this is what the press reported in 2025; venues may or may not repeat, and we have no relationship with any of them.

  • Chilango (17 December 2025, updated 29 December). It listed multi-course dinners with the twelve grapes in the Historic Centre (Botanero del Bosque, from 8 pm), a Gatsby-style casino and jazz night at Pandora Rooftop (7 pm to 2 am, with a dress code), a tasting menu at Marta (from 8 pm), a buffet with a DJ until 1 am at Rulfo Paraje Latino in the Hyatt Regency, and two dinner seatings at Fónico and Máximo in Roma Norte.
  • adn40 (28 December 2025, updated July 2026). It added a party with dinner at Quinta Imperial in Aragón, a three-course dinner at Terraza Cha Cha Chá and live music from 10 pm at Guanajuato 239.
  • A nearby getaway. Chilango also included a package with lodging, dinner and a party at The Lorian Club in Cocoyoc, Morelos, if you would rather leave the city.

Before booking, ask clearly: whether the final price includes tax, tip and drinks; whether the table is shared; whether there is a second seating and when you must free the table; what happens if you cancel; and whether the deposit is paid only through the venue's official channel (phone, OpenTable, verified WhatsApp or its website). Be wary of anyone asking for deposits to a personal account; our guide to deposit scams explains the warning signs.

If you prefer dinner with a view, the guide to rooftops in Mexico City lists places for a drink; for dinner in Polanco or Condesa, see the restaurant guide.

04Grapes, lentils and suitcases: toast traditions

The midnight toast has its customs, and sharing them is an easy way to have a good time. They are popular traditions, not rules, and every family has its own version.

  • Twelve grapes. You eat one grape with each chime and make a wish for each month of the year. Bring the grapes already washed and, to make the challenge easier, seedless.
  • Lentils. Some households serve a plate of lentils or keep a few in a pocket to attract prosperity.
  • The suitcase. Whoever wants to travel in the coming year walks around the block with a suitcase, sometimes to the neighbours' laughter. Do it in daylight or on your hotel's street, where there are lights and people.
  • Coloured underwear. Red for love and yellow for money, they say; it is a game, not a requirement.
  • The toast. With cider, sparkling wine or a non-alcoholic drink: choose whichever you like.

05Getting there and back: transport and safety

Mexico Travel & Leisure recommends walking if your hotel is within 20 or 30 minutes of the event, checking Metro and Metrobús hours on the day (some stations close earlier) and remembering that ride-hailing pickup points can be several blocks away because of closures.

  • Where to sleep. The same source suggests Juárez and Reforma if the event returns to the Ángel; Roma Norte and Condesa for dinner and walking; Polanco for high-end dinners, though it is less convenient for a mass event. If you already know each other and have talked about it, our guide to romantic hotels in Mexico City may help.
  • Rides. Order the car through the app and check the plate and name before getting in; avoid taxis offered on the street. Plan your departure for a quiet hour, not the peak of traffic.
  • Drinks. Watch your glass, do not accept drinks from strangers and do not drink more than you can handle with a clear head. If someone feels unwell or unsafe, tell a trusted person or the venue staff.
  • Nightlife. Buy tickets only at the venue or from an authorised seller; our nightlife scam signs and the guide to going out safely at night help you choose wisely.
  • Emergencies. The number is 911. Share your location with someone you trust and tell them when you reach your hotel.

061 January: a slow day, with a reservation

Most cities slow down on 1 January. Mexico Travel & Leisure recommends a relaxed day because closures are likely, and publishes a multi-day itinerary with a walk through the historic centre on the 30th and trips to Teotihuacán or Xochimilco on the 2nd.

  • Late breakfast. Reserve where you can: the restaurants that do open that day tend to fill up, and others close entirely.
  • Short walk. A stroll through Chapultepec, Coyoacán or Condesa is a gentle way to wake up the morning after.
  • Museums and shops. Many museums and shops close or shorten their hours on 1 January; check each one.
  • Hotel check-out. Ask about the check-out time on 1 January; with the city quiet, late check-outs are not always guaranteed.

07If you are still getting to know each other: a no-pressure alternative

If you have only been on a few dates, 31 December does not have to be a big production. A coffee, a daytime lunch in a public place or a walk through Chapultepec shows whether there is a connection without hotels or reservations in the way. A midnight toast or a getaway can be decided later, when both of you want it and have talked it over calmly. And if things do not fit, our warning signs help you decide in time.

Venues, hours, programmes and notices change: confirm everything with each hotel, restaurant or organiser and with official sources before you go. We have no relationship with any of the places mentioned and the listings are not paid.

Frequently asked questions

Will there be a public party on Reforma on 31 December 2026?

We could not verify an official announcement. In 2025 there was a free electronic-music party on Reforma, 6 pm to 2 am, and Mexico Travel & Leisure (28 September 2026) noted that the 2026 venue, artists and hours had not yet been released. Confirm on the city government's channels a week before.

How early should I book a dinner or rooftop?

As early as possible: New Year menus have fixed times and sometimes two seatings, and the most popular places fill up. Chilango (17 December 2025) advised booking in advance. Ask about cancellation and what the price includes.

Does the Metro run on the night of the 31st?

It depends on the year and the operation: some stations close earlier or have special hours. Mexico Travel & Leisure advises checking Metro and Metrobús hours on the day. Keep a plan B for getting back, such as a nearby hotel.

What is open on 1 January?

Less than usual. Some restaurants open, but many museums and shops close or shorten their hours. Reserve breakfast and confirm each place; Posta (31 December 2025) reported, for example, that the Mérida zoo did not open on 1 January 2026.

Is this a good idea for a first date?

No. New Year's Eve means fixed reservations, crowds and pressure; for a first date choose a coffee or a daytime lunch in a public place, with your own transport.
