Nightlife scams and risks in Mexico City: how to protect yourself

Most nights in Mexico City pass without incident, but there are specific risks that can be prevented. This guide gathers them with the recommendations of official sources: the Mexico City government’s decalogue, the 2026 alert from the U.S. Embassy and Profeco’s warnings. It is general information for adults, not a directory of areas or venues.

In short

  • The most repeated risks are spiked drinks, abusive charges, promoters with street games and unsafe rides.
  • The Mexico City government recommends watching your drink, not handing over your card, using a ride-hailing or licensed-stand taxi and not leaving with someone you have just met.
  • Profeco states that bars cannot require a minimum spend and that a mandatory tip is not legal.
  • If something goes wrong, seek medical help at once and report it to 911 or, anonymously, to 089.

01An honest picture

On 20 August 2023 the Mexico City government presented the decalogue “No lo dejes a la suerte” (“Don’t leave it to luck”), with recommendations for going out at night, together with the Secretariat of Citizen Security and the Citizen Council for Security and Justice. Its ideas remain the basis of any plan.

  • Plan your night. Tell someone where you are going, go out and come back in a group, charge your phone and do your shopping by day.
  • Know your limits. Turn down drinking challenges and go home if you are unsteady.
  • Watch your surroundings. Report suspicious behaviour to the venue’s management and the authorities.

This is general information. It is best to prepare before you go out, not during.

Going out at night is not dangerous in itself; going out without a plan is.

02Spiked drinks

Spiking a drink (“canasteo” in Mexico City) is the practice of using substances to cause a loss of consciousness in order to rob or sexually abuse someone. It happens mostly in bars and nightclubs, but also in homes and hotels.

In 2023 the Mexico City government presented figures: 66% of victims were women and 34% men, with the highest risk between ages 21 and 45; 27.6% of cases took place in bars. In June 2026 the U.S. Embassy in Mexico warned about adulterated drinks during the 2026 World Cup, according to UnoTV.

  • Never leave your drink unattended, not to dance and not to go to the bathroom.
  • Don’t accept drinks from strangers. Order straight from the bar, from the person preparing it.
  • Pay attention to the signs. Dizziness, confusion or weakness after a few sips, or a change in taste, smell or colour.
  • If you suspect something, seek medical attention at once, tell the venue’s staff, don’t stay alone and keep the details of where it happened.

Anyone can be a victim, regardless of sex or experience.

03Tabs and abusive charges

An inflated tab or an extra charge is a frequent complaint. These are rules Profeco has pointed out, and you can cite them calmly if you need to.

  • They cannot require a minimum spend. Profeco states that bars and clubs cannot ask for a minimum spend.
  • The tip is not mandatory. An imposed 10% or 15% tip is illegal; a tip recognises service.
  • Ask for the price and the receipt. Venues must display prices and taxes clearly and give you a receipt.
  • Don’t hand over your card to be charged somewhere else, and never share your PIN. Check your banking app notifications.

To complain, Profeco lists the Consumer Hotline 55 5568 8722 and the email [email protected], according to a 2024 report; confirm the current details. Have the venue’s name and address to hand.

04Promoters and street games

In 2025, outlets such as ADN 40 described a scam that keeps recurring in busy areas such as Del Valle, Roma and Nápoles. People posing as brand promoters offer a free drink and then invite you to a game with prizes; they ask for an initial payment of around 300 pesos and keep asking for more.

  • The game is designed to make you feel you almost won. That keeps you paying.
  • Pay by card and there is no refund. Because the payments are voluntary, banks do not return them.
  • The drink may be adulterated, which makes it hard to think clearly.
  • Reported losses. The testimonies cited range from 10,000 to more than 64,000 pesos.

The rule is simple: don’t accept drinks from strangers, even if they seem part of a promotion, and avoid street games that promise prizes. If it happened to you, report it to 911 or, anonymously, to 089, or through the Mexico City Attorney General’s Digital Complaint site.

05Rides home and the “after”

Getting home is part of the plan, not a loose end.

  • Use a ride-hailing or licensed-stand taxi. Check the plates and the driver’s ID and share your location.
  • Refuse any drink inside the car.
  • Be careful with the “after”. The decalogue recommends not leaving with people you have just met or following them if you are not fully in command of yourself.
  • Don’t share private details such as your address or information about your family or finances.
  • Watch the clock. According to the 2023 decalogue, alcohol sales were permitted until 2:30 a.m.; confirm the current rule.

If you are arranging to meet someone, put transport first: each person decides how they arrive and how they leave.

06Red-light areas, and why this is not the way to meet anyone

Some of these risks concentrate in the areas known for street sex work, where there are also risks of theft, extortion and trafficking. We explain them in more detail in our guide to the red-light areas of Mexico City, with no addresses or directions, only to inform and prevent risk.

An encounter of that kind is a transaction: there is no prior acquaintance and no way to know whether the other person is taking part freely. If what you want is a relationship, there are paths built on consent and verification.

Premium Dating Mexico is a private introduction service mediated by the administrator: it is free for women, nobody pays for a meeting, identities are verified and photos are protected. See the Mexico City page or read our guide to red flags.

This guide is general information, not legal or medical advice. Rules, phone numbers and enforcement change: confirm them with official sources. We have no relationship with any establishment mentioned.
