Christmas lights in Guadalajara: ice rink, Ferris wheel and the Centro Histórico

Guadalajara lends itself to a lights date because the Centro Histórico is walkable: plazas, pedestrian paseos, the Cathedral and, in December, the Jalisco government’s winter festival with an ice rink and a Ferris wheel. This guide collects what the press reported in 2025 with dates, what is still unconfirmed for 2026, an evening plan with times, tips for the cold and the crowds, and a safety list. It suits first dates in the late afternoon in a public place, and people who already know each other.

In short

  • In 2025 the Ilusionante festival set up a free ice rink on Paseo Fray Antonio Alcalde and a free Ferris wheel in front of the Plaza de Armas; confirm whether they return in 2026.
  • Both stayed open until 7 January 2026; the reported hours were 9:30 to 21:30 for the rink and 14:00 to 21:00 for the wheel.
  • The big GDLuz light festival is no longer a December event: in 2026 it took place 23 to 26 April, so do not look for it on these dates.
  • Plan the evening in the Centro on foot, dress for cool nights and close with each person taking their own ride home.

01Why Guadalajara’s Centro works for a lights date

Guadalajara’s Centro Histórico gathers the Cathedral, the Plaza de Armas, the Rotonda de las y los Jaliscienses Ilustres and several pedestrian paseos within a few blocks. In December that compactness is an advantage: you park once, or arrive by ride-hailing, and everything else is on foot, with lit buildings, decorated trees and a public setting with people around.

Offer two options, let the other person choose and accept a “no, thanks” without pressure.

A centre you can walk end to end saves traffic and leaves time to talk.

02What ran in 2025 (with source and date)

These details are from last year and work as a map. Each comes from a press report; confirm before you go.

  • Ice rink. Crónica Jalisco reported on 16 December 2025 that the Festival de Invierno Ilusionante rink stood on Paseo Fray Antonio Alcalde, in front of the Rotonda de las y los Jaliscienses Ilustres, with free entry, 9:30 to 21:30 with a break from 14:30 to 16:30, until 7 January 2026. Sessions ran in 20-minute cycles.
  • Ferris wheel. The same article places the wheel on Paseo Alcalde, in front of the Plaza de Armas, free, from 17 December 2025 to 7 January 2026, 14:00 to 21:00.
  • Rest of the festival. Ilusionante included posadas, concerts, pastorelas and dance and music shows in Guadalajara, Zapopan, Tlajomulco and Puerto Vallarta, and mentioned another rink in Zapopan. It also highlights the Centro Histórico’s lights, decorated trees and views of the Cathedral.
  • Tlaquepaque. Crónica Jalisco reported on 16 December 2023 a Christmas celebration with a tree lighting and ice rink in Tlaquepaque; if you want a plan in that neighbourhood, confirm whether it repeats.
  • GDLuz. The city’s biggest light festival moved from its usual February slot: Posta reported on 10 April 2026 that it would run 23 to 26 April, because of works in the Centro Histórico linked to the World Cup. It is not a December event.

03What we know for 2026 and what to confirm

As of this guide (2 November 2026) we could not find a published program for the 2026 winter festival. A reasonable expectation is a calendar similar to 2025, with installations from mid-December to early January, but that is an assumption: confirm before you suggest it.

  • Rink and Ferris wheel venue and dates. In 2025 they opened in mid-December; verify venue, opening and hours on the official channels of the Jalisco and Guadalajara governments.
  • Works and routes. Posta reported renovation works in the Centro Histórico in April 2026; check whether closures change your route.
  • Posadas and concert program. If a particular event is part of the plan, check the day’s program.
  • Book fair. The FIL ends on 6 December; if you want to combine both plans, see the Guadalajara FIL guide.

04An evening plan with times

These times are an example; adjust them to what you confirm. If the rink or the wheel is not open, the walk through the Centro works just as well.

  • 5:00 p.m., meet. Meet at the Plaza de Armas or in front of the Cathedral, at a visible spot and not inside a venue. With daylight fading, the Centro feels calmer.
  • 5:15, walk along Paseo Alcalde. If the Ferris wheel is open, going up is a simple way to see the city lit. If you would rather not, look at the lights from below.
  • 6:15, ice rink (optional). Skating is fun but physical; suggest it only if you both want to, and offer watching and chatting as an alternative. The 20-minute session cycles make it easy to decide on the spot.
  • 7:15, something warm. A ponche, hot chocolate or coffee in the Centro to decide whether to continue.
  • 8:00, early dinner. If you both want to continue, a simple dinner; for options see the restaurant guide for Guadalajara and the Providencia guide.
  • 9:15, close. A thank-you, one clear sentence and each person to their own ride.

An hour at the rink or on the wheel and a short dinner are enough: the rest is conversation.

05Cold, crowds and getting around

  • Layers. December nights in Guadalajara are cool and the Centro is an open space; bring a coat and scarf, and check the forecast the same day.
  • Fewer people. Weekdays and early afternoon mean shorter lines; weekends, posada days and nights close to Christmas tend to be busier.
  • Transport. The simplest is for each person to arrive and leave on their own. If you use ride-hailing, ask to be dropped a few blocks from the access if there are closures, and order the ride back in good time, because demand rises at closing.
  • Restrooms and battery. Both are scarce in a busy plaza; plan a stop at a café and carry a power bank.

06Safety and closing

  • Public place and tell someone. Tell a trusted person where you will be and when you expect to be back. Review the safety and trust guide.
  • Look after your things. In crowds, bag or backpack in front, phone put away on the street and little cash.
  • Watch your drink. Order it yourself and never leave a glass unattended. More on the night in the Guadalajara nightlife guide.
  • Changes of plan that do not add up. If someone insists on changing the place, asks for a deposit or pushes to continue in private, change the plan. The red flags help.
