Slow replies at Christmas and New Year: how to read the silence calmly
Between 24 December and 6 January, many conversations that were moving fast suddenly slow down: the other person is travelling, having dinner with family, sleeping late or simply without the phone at hand. That can be scary for someone who is just starting to get to know a person, but most of the time it means nothing negative. This guide helps you understand why rhythms change over the holidays, how to write without pressure, which WhatsApp messages you can adapt (in Spanish, with translation) and how to reschedule a date without losing the thread. These are general tips for adults; each person has their own pace, and so do you.
In short
- Over the holidays, silence usually has simple causes: travel, family, poor signal, rest or time off; do not read it as rejection without other signs.
- Write briefly and clearly, once, with no repeated messages or reproaches; pressure makes things worse.
- Use short, warm messages, offer a flexible plan and respect that the person wants to spend those days with their family.
- If someone disappears and returns asking for money, or ignores your limits, that is a warning sign: do not send money, and review our safety guides.
01Why rhythms change over the holidays
From 16 to 24 December there are posadas almost every night, and on the 24th and 25th many families get together to have dinner, eat leftovers and spend time together. Between 31 December and 6 January, many people travel to family homes, the beach or their hometowns, and some workplaces close or give time off those days (confirm the company calendar or official sources). Throughout that period, it is normal for the phone to take a back seat.
- Travel and poor signal. Someone visiting family in another city or in the countryside may have a bad connection or low battery.
- A lot going on. Between dinners, preparations and gatherings, there is little time to chat.
- Real rest. Some people use time off to disconnect from screens.
- Seasonal feelings. The holidays can bring joy but also nostalgia, tiredness or sadness; the other person may need space. It is not personal.
- Family priorities. In many Mexican families these dates are for being present with their own people. Respecting that says a lot about you.
To keep the season's calendar at hand, see our December calendar.
At Christmas, silence almost always means someone is busy with their people, not that they forgot you.
02How to read the silence calmly
Before interpreting a silence, ask yourself what you actually know. Two or three days without a reply at this time of year are not a signal; a whole week without a word, with no explanation, may deserve a conversation, but after the holidays.
- Do the math. Did they say they were travelling? Did they mention a family gathering? Did they used to answer quickly? If the rhythm changed just with the holidays, that is most likely the reason.
- Notice the tone when they do reply. If they answer warmly, even late, the interest is probably still there.
- Do not over-read the blue ticks. Seeing your message and not answering is not a message in itself; sometimes they opened it in passing.
- Look after your own anxiety. If the silence worries you, write down your thoughts, talk to a friend or go for a walk; do not turn the chat into a test.
- Tell silence apart from warning signs. A holiday silence is not a pattern of manipulation. But if the person disappears and reappears asking for money, avoids meeting, changes their story or pressures you, that does call for caution.
To review the warning signs, see our guide to red flags and the one on deposit scams.
03How to write without pressure
A well-measured message leaves the door open without demanding anything. Some guidelines:
- One at a time. Send one message and wait. Writing three times in a row, calling or asking “why aren't you answering?” puts on pressure and tends to push people away.
- Short and warm. One or two lines, with an open question that is easy to answer or no question at all.
- No reproaches. Avoid “you disappeared” or “I saw you were online.” If you need to say something about the rhythm, do it later, calmly.
- Flexible. Offer options (“when you're back,” “if the 27th works for you”) rather than demanding a date.
- Respect their family. An “enjoy your dinner” or “a hug to your family” adds more than a complaint.
The best rule: write the way you would like to be written to if you were at a dinner with your own family.
04WhatsApp messages you can adapt
Adjust the tone to your relationship and your style. These are examples with translation:
- To say hello over the holidays: “Te mando un abrazo en estas fiestas. Espero que la pases muy bien con tu familia. Cuando tengas un rato, me cuentas cómo va todo.” (Sending you a hug this holiday. I hope you have a great time with your family. When you have a moment, tell me how it's going.)
- After a few days without a reply: “Hola, solo quería saludarte. Sé que son días de mucho movimiento. Sin prisa, cuando puedas me escribes.” (Hi, I just wanted to say hello. I know these are busy days. No rush, write me when you can.)
- To suggest a date after the holidays: “¿Te late que nos veamos el 8 o el 9 para un café? Si prefieres otra fecha, me adapto.” (How about we meet on the 8th or 9th for coffee? If you prefer another date, I'll adapt.)
- To say you cannot make a date: “Gracias por la invitación. Esa semana la tengo con mi familia, pero me encantaría vernos después del 6. ¿Te parece?” (Thanks for the invitation. I have that week with my family, but I'd love to see you after the 6th. Would that work?)
- To close things clearly if you are no longer interested: “Gracias por estos días tan bonitos. Prefiero ser claro: creo que no estamos en la misma sintonía. Te deseo lo mejor.” (Thank you for these lovely days. I prefer to be clear: I don't think we're on the same page. I wish you the best.)
If you want to practice more phrases, see our guide to Spanish for WhatsApp and first dates. Avoid sharing sensitive details, such as your address, or sending money over chat.
05How to reschedule a date without losing the thread
The holidays make plans move. Rescheduling kindly is a chance to show a good attitude.
- Give notice early. The sooner the better; a last-minute notice is harder to receive.
- Explain briefly. No need for details: “a family commitment came up” is enough.
- Offer a concrete alternative. A new date and plan show interest; avoid a vague “we'll see.”
- Confirm the day before. A short message to check it is still on avoids misunderstandings, especially in busy weeks.
- Keep the meeting in a public place. If rescheduling changes the place or the plan, the usual rules apply: public space, your own transport and telling someone you trust.
If you are rescheduled once or twice, be understanding. If it happens constantly, with no new date offered, or the person only shows up when it suits them, you can decide how much effort to put in. To plan the first date after the holidays, see our first date guide.
06When the silence is not about the holidays
Almost always, slow replies in December are normal. Some situations, however, deserve more attention, especially if you have not yet met in person.
- An “emergency” involving money appears. If someone you have not met in person disappears and reappears asking for a deposit, a gift card or financial help, send nothing. Review our guide to deposit scams and the one on seasonal scams.
- They avoid video calls or meeting. Many excuses in a row to never talk live can be a sign.
- They pressure or blame you. If they make you feel bad about your pace or demand immediate answers, it is a sign they do not respect your limits.
- Their story changes. If details of their life do not add up, look after your safety and ask someone you trust for help.

Frequently asked questions
How long is it normal for someone to take to reply at Christmas?
Several days is not unusual: many people travel, are with family or disconnect between 24 December and 6 January. Do not take it as rejection if communication was good before.
Should I write again if they do not reply?
Once, with a short, warm message, and then wait. Writing several times in a row or complaining usually adds pressure and pushes people away. If several days pass, you can pick the conversation back up when routines return.
What should I do if the person cancels a holiday date?
Reply calmly, thank them for letting you know and offer a concrete alternative date. A cancellation is not a rejection; watch whether the person offers another option.
When should I worry about a silence?
When, besides the silence, other signs appear: requests for money, avoiding video calls, pressure, stories that change or upset when you set limits. In that case look after your safety and talk to someone you trust.
Is it a bad idea to write at midnight on the 24th or the 31st?
A brief greeting is nice, but do not expect an immediate answer: the person is probably with their family. Avoid long or emotional messages at those hours.
How do I tell them I would rather spend the holidays with my family?
Clearly and warmly: thank them for the invitation, say those days are for your family and suggest meeting after 6 January. A respectful person will understand.
