Spanish phrases and WhatsApp etiquette for a first date: what to say and how to read the messages

If you have just arrived in Mexico, or you are helping someone who is only starting to learn Spanish, this guide gathers useful phrases for a first date and a few keys to reading WhatsApp without misunderstandings. Every Spanish phrase comes with its English meaning in brackets. You do not need to speak perfectly: simple Spanish, said warmly and with goodwill, is appreciated far more than a flawless but cold sentence.

In short

  • On a first date “tú” is the natural choice, but let the other person set the tone and use “usted” if she does or if she is older.
  • Simple, friendly phrases are enough: greeting, inviting, confirming time and place, asking for a recommendation and saying thanks.
  • On WhatsApp, a voice note, an emoji or a late reply rarely mean what they seem to; do not over-message and do not panic over a blue tick.
  • “Ahorita”, “al rato” and “luego nos vemos” are flexible in Mexico: always confirm day, time and place.

01Tú or usted: how to address the other person

Spanish has two ways to say “you” to one person: “tú”, which is closer, and “usted”, which is more formal. In Mexico, between adults getting to know each other for a date, it is most common to start with “tú”. Still, there are nuances worth knowing, especially if the other person is older than you or if the first contact was formal.

  • Follow her lead. If she addresses you as “usted”, answer in the same way until she says otherwise. If she uses “tú”, do the same.
  • Ask naturally. “¿Te puedo tutear?” (May I use the informal “you” with you?) is a respectful phrase and well received.
  • With older people or a formal first message, “usted” is a sign of courtesy; nobody is offended by too much respect.
  • Mistakes are fine. Mixing “tú” and “usted” is very common among learners; a smile and a “perdón, estoy aprendiendo” (sorry, I am learning) settle the moment.

What matters most is not grammar but tone: ask, listen and show interest. If you do not know how to sound natural in a first message, Carolina, our virtual assistant (AI), can help you practise. She is an artificial intelligence: she is useful for practising ideas and does not replace people.

On a date, the tone is set by whoever feels more comfortable, and it adjusts without drama.

02Opening the conversation: the first message

A short, friendly and specific first message works better than a long or generic one. Mention something concrete from the profile or something you share, ask a single question and leave room for a reply.

  • “Hola, ¿cómo estás?” (Hi, how are you?)
  • “Mucho gusto, me llamo ... y soy de ...” (Nice to meet you, my name is ... and I am from ...)
  • “Vi que te gusta la cocina oaxaqueña, ¿cuál es tu platillo favorito?” (I saw that you like Oaxacan food, what is your favorite dish?)
  • “Estoy aprendiendo español, gracias por tu paciencia.” (I am learning Spanish, thank you for your patience.)
  • “¿Te gustaría platicar un rato por mensaje antes de planear algo?” (Would you like to chat by message for a while before planning anything?)

Avoid one-word messages (“hola”) with no question, exaggerated compliments in the second message and any comment about her looks right away. A sincere “gracias por contestar” (thanks for replying) and a little curiosity open more conversations than any phrase learned by heart.

03Inviting, confirming and saying you are running late

Once you have been chatting for a few days, a clear invitation without pressure is ideal: suggest a public place and a reasonable time, and let the other person decide. After she accepts, confirm on the day; plans in Mexico adjust easily, and a short confirmation prevents misunderstandings.

  • “¿Te gustaría tomar un café el sábado por la tarde?” (Would you like to have a coffee on Saturday afternoon?)
  • “Tengo dos ideas: un café en el centro o un paseo por el parque. ¿Cuál prefieres?” (I have two ideas: a coffee downtown or a walk in the park. Which do you prefer?)
  • “¿A qué hora te queda bien?” (What time works for you?)
  • “Quedamos el sábado a las 5 en la entrada del café, ¿te parece?” (So Saturday at 5 at the café entrance, does that work?)
  • “Voy en camino, llego en diez minutos.” (I am on my way, I will arrive in ten minutes.)
  • “Me retrasé por el tráfico, disculpa. Ya casi llego.” (I am running late because of traffic, sorry. I am almost there.)

A confirmation message the day before or that morning (“Todo bien para hoy, ¿verdad?”, All good for today, right?) is not considered pushy; on the contrary, it shows consideration. If something changes, say so as early as possible and suggest another specific date.

04On the date: courtesy and phrases for the table

During the date, courtesy and interest weigh more than vocabulary. These phrases help you move naturally in a restaurant or café and keep the conversation going.

  • “¿Qué me recomiendas?” (What do you recommend?)
  • “Con permiso.” (Excuse me, when you pass in front of someone or leave the table.)
  • “Provecho.” (Enjoy your meal, said to people who are eating.)
  • “Salud.” (Cheers.)
  • “Está delicioso, gracias por traerme.” (It is delicious, thank you for bringing me.)
  • “Disculpa mi español, ¿puedes repetirlo más despacio?” (Sorry for my Spanish, can you repeat that more slowly?)
  • “¿Cómo se dice ... en español?” (How do you say ... in Spanish?)
  • “Me gustaría invitar la cuenta, o la dividimos, como prefieras.” (I would like to treat you, or we can split it, whichever you prefer.)

Asking “¿cómo se dice...?” is a charming way to turn an obstacle into conversation. If the other person speaks English, do not assume she wants to switch languages: offer to alternate and let her decide.

05How to read WhatsApp without misunderstandings

In Mexico WhatsApp is the main channel for almost everything, and it has its own habits. Misreading one of them is a frequent source of needless worry.

  • Voice notes. They are very common and do not mean someone is being over-familiar; it is a comfortable way to talk. If you prefer text, you can say “¿me lo escribes? Voy en el metro” (Could you write it? I am on the metro).
  • The ticks. Two blue ticks mean the message was read, but that feature can be turned off. Do not read a “seen” message without a reply as lack of interest: many people answer when they have time.
  • Reply times. Answering within hours, even the next day, is normal for busy people. Avoid sending three messages in a row asking whether she got the first one.
  • Emojis. A smiley or a heart can be just kindness, not a declaration. Answer in a similar tone and do not read between the lines.
  • “Ahorita”. It can mean right now, in a little while or later; “al rato” means “later” with no set time. If it matters, ask: “¿A qué hora, aproximadamente?” (About what time?).
  • “Luego nos vemos” or “nos vemos”. It is usually a friendly goodbye, not a confirmed date. To really meet, fix day, time and place.

It helps not to send messages at odd hours or to demand immediate replies. A healthy conversation leaves room for each person to have a life; the person who pushes for constant answers is usually the warning sign, not the one who takes a while to reply.

06Saying no and saying goodbye kindly

Saying no, or that you would rather not continue, is also part of a good conversation. In Mexico courtesy and clarity said warmly are usually valued: you do not need long explanations, and you should not just stop replying.

  • “Gracias por la cita, la pasé muy bien, pero no siento que haya química.” (Thank you for the date, I had a good time, but I do not feel a connection.)
  • “Prefiero que seamos amigos.” (I would prefer that we stay friends.)
  • “Te agradezco la invitación, pero por ahora prefiero no vernos.” (Thank you for the invitation, but for now I prefer not to meet.)
  • “Prefiero no compartir eso, gracias.” (I prefer not to share that, thank you.)
  • “Me voy a ir ya, gracias por la tarde.” (I am going to head out now, thank you for the afternoon.)
  • “Con gusto te escribo mañana.” (I will gladly write to you tomorrow.)

If someone keeps insisting after a “no”, you do not have to justify yourself: you can repeat it once kindly and, if she or he continues, stop replying and block. For more on staying safe in chat, read safety and trust advice, and to plan the date, the first date guide.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need perfect Spanish to date in Mexico?

No. Simple Spanish with a good attitude and willingness to learn is usually valued more than perfection. Ask people to repeat slowly, use short phrases and laugh off mistakes.

Should I use “tú” or “usted” on a first date?

Among adults meeting for a date, “tú” is most common. Use “usted” if the other person does or if she is older than you, and ask “¿te puedo tutear?” if you are unsure.

What does “ahorita” mean on WhatsApp?

It depends on context: it can be right now, in a few minutes or later. If you need to know when, ask for an approximate time and confirm the plan with day, time and place.

She left me on “seen”, has she lost interest?

Not necessarily. Read receipts can be turned off and many people reply when they have time. Do not send several messages in a row; wait, and if several days pass you can write once, kindly.
