Christmas lights in Querétaro: pedestrian streets, gardens and the nativity in the Centro
Querétaro’s Centro Histórico can be walked end to end, and in December it fills with lights, trees, decorated pedestrian streets and a monumental nativity. As a date it is a comfortable plan: pedestrian streets, plazas with benches, and cafés and restaurants a few steps away. This guide collects what the press reported in 2025 and earlier years with dates, what is still unconfirmed for 2026, an evening plan with times, tips for the cold and the crowds, and a safety list. It suits a first date in the late afternoon in a public place, and people who already know each other.
In short
- In 2025 the reported attractions included a 20-metre tree in Plaza de Armas, a Christmas arch on Andador Madero, a magic castle in Jardín Guerrero and ice rinks in Querétaro municipality; there is no confirmed 2026 program.
- The custom, according to reports from 2022 and 2023, is to switch on the lights in early December and keep them until early January, with a monumental nativity in Jardín Zenea.
- The Centro is walkable: arrive early, dress warmly because nights are cold, and allow for street closures on parade days.
- Each person with their own ride, a public place and a trusted person told; confirm dates and hours with official sources.
01Why Querétaro’s Centro works for a lights date
Querétaro’s Centro Histórico has pedestrian streets, gardens and plazas close to each other, so you can walk without a fixed route and stop at a café without changing the plan. In December that structure fills with ornaments and becomes a stroll in itself.
- First date. An evening of one or two hours, meeting at a visible point such as Plaza de Armas, is a good start. See the plan for a first date in Querétaro, the first-date guide and the one on consent on a first date.
- People who already know each other. It pairs well with dinner in the Centro or a weekend in the city; see the Querétaro restaurant guide.
- When it does not suit. If you dislike crowds or it is very cold, see other ideas in rainy or cold-day dates and daytime dates.
Offer two options, let the other person choose and accept a “no, thanks” without pushing.
A pedestrian centre with a plaza every few blocks lets you stop when you want and carry on when you want.
02What was reported in 2025 and earlier (with source and date)
The Querétaro information comes from several reports from different years. Use it as a map of the season, not as a 2026 program.
- 2025. Tus Buenas Noticias reported on 12 November 2025 that the Festival Alegría Contigo would include a 20-metre Christmas tree in Plaza de Armas, a magic castle in Jardín Guerrero, a Christmas forest in Plaza Fundadores, a Christmas arch on Andador Madero, monumental angels in Plaza Constitución, and audiovisual and light shows on Andador Libertad, the water-tank area, Plazuela Mariano de las Casas and the Centro delegation. It announced ice rinks in Landa de Matamoros, Corregidora, Querétaro and San Juan del Río, and a parade in the capital on 21 December 2025, with no route or time published in that article.
- 2023. Uno TV reported on 5 December 2023 that the monumental nativity at Jardín Zenea and the tree were switched on Monday 4 December at 7:00 p.m., with celebrations until 8 January, and that the light tunnel at Jardín Corregidora is a popular photo spot.
- 2022. Plaza de Armas reported on 30 November 2022 that the Centro Histórico was lit with more than 98,000 LED lights from 1 December to 7 January 2023, among them on Andador 5 de Mayo, Jardín Guerrero, the Alameda and Plaza Constitución.
- 2021. Líder Empresarial published on 24 December 2021 that the Desfile de Carros Bíblicos leaves on 24 December at 19:00 through the Centro, with the Verbena Navideña on 25 December at 19:00 in Jardín Zenea, and that the Centro closes to vehicles on 24 December from 18:00 to 23:00.
03What we know for 2026 and what to confirm
As of this guide (2 November 2026) we could not find a published program for Querétaro this year. Reports from earlier years point to a stable pattern (lights from early December to early January, a nativity in Jardín Zenea, parades in the last week), but that is a pattern and not a fact: confirm before you invite anyone.
- Switch-on and closing dates. In 2023 it was 4 December; in 2022, 1 December to 7 January. For 2026 confirm on Querétaro’s official channels.
- Ice rinks. Verify each venue separately, with hours, access and requirements.
- Parades and street closures. Check the dates and the closed streets before deciding how to arrive, especially 21 and 24 December if the pattern repeats.
- Works or changes on the pedestrian streets. If something has changed in the Centro, adjust your route.

04An evening plan with times
These times are examples; adjust them to what you confirm.
- 5:00 p.m., meet. Meet in Plaza de Armas, at a visible spot and not inside a venue. At this hour there is still light and the plazas are calmer.
- 5:15, walk along Andador Madero. If the Christmas arch returns, it is a good spot for photos and an unhurried walk.
- 6:15, Jardín Guerrero and Plaza Constitución. If there is decoration or light shows, they are short stops. As night falls the lights look better.
- 7:15, something warm. A ponche, hot chocolate or coffee in the Centro to decide whether to continue.
- 8:00, early dinner. If you both want to continue, a simple dinner; for options and criteria see the Querétaro restaurant guide.
- 9:00, close. A thank-you, one clear sentence and each person to their own ride.
If you want to see the monumental nativity and the tree in Jardín Zenea, add it to the walk: it is a few steps away and can end the evening.
With a single route on foot, the evening holds itself together: all you need is a start time and a finish time.
05Cold, crowds and getting around
- Layers. December nights in Querétaro are cold and the Centro is an open space; bring a coat and scarf, and check the forecast the same day.
- Fewer people. Weekdays and early afternoon mean shorter lines; weekends, parade days and nights close to Christmas tend to be busier.
- Street closures. On parade days and Nochebuena the Centro closes to traffic, according to reports from earlier years; plan to leave the car outside and walk, or ask to be dropped a few blocks away.
- Transport. The simplest is for each person to arrive and leave on their own. Order the ride back in good time, because demand rises at closing.
- Restrooms and battery. Both are scarce in a busy plaza; plan a stop at a café and carry a power bank.
06Safety and closing
- Public place and tell someone. Tell a trusted person where you will be and when you expect to be back. Review the safety and trust guide.
- Look after your things. In crowds, bag or backpack in front, phone put away on the street and little cash.
- Watch your drink. Order it yourself and never leave a glass unattended.
- Changes of plan that do not add up. If someone insists on changing the place, asks for a deposit or pushes to continue in private, change the plan. The red flags help.
