Whale sharks and whales in La Paz: a winter plan by the sea
Between autumn and spring, the Bay of La Paz and the Pacific coast of Baja California Sur become some of the best places in Mexico to see marine wildlife: whale sharks in the bay and, a little farther away, grey whales in Magdalena Bay. It is a lovely plan for two people who already know each other and want a different kind of day, but it depends on nature, permits and rules that change every season. This guide does not recommend or list operators: it explains how things work, what to ask and how to look after the animals and yourself. Confirm everything with the authorities before you book.
In short
- According to local press, the whale shark season in La Paz runs from October to April; grey whale watching in Magdalena Bay is concentrated from January to March.
- Authorities can suspend swimming with whale sharks when very few animals are present, as happened in February 2025. Have a plan B and do not pay in advance without knowing the change policy.
- Only operators with current federal authorization (Conanp and Semarnat), tourism registration and, in La Paz, the municipal badge may operate: check before you pay.
- This is a plan for people who already know each other and choose it by mutual agreement, not for a first date.
01What you can see and when
There are two different spectacles and it helps not to mix them up. The first is the whale shark, which arrives in the Bay of La Paz and can be watched and, where it is allowed, swum alongside with an authorized operator. Zeta Tijuana (February 11, 2025) says the season runs from October to April and is an important source of income for local providers; Posta (November 24, 2025) reported that the 2025–2026 season had begun with the first animals recorded.
The second is the grey whale, which spends the winter in the Pacific lagoons of Baja California Sur. Posta (December 16, 2025) describes a watching season from late December to April, with the most activity in February and March, and names Magdalena Bay and Puerto San Carlos as one of the areas, “relatively close to La Paz”. Humpback whales, by contrast, are more associated with Los Cabos: see the guide to humpback whales in Los Cabos.
For winter 2026–2027, confirm whether the whale shark season has already started and how many animals have been seen; authorized operators and the local tourism office can tell you.
Nature does not follow a calendar: the season is a window, not a guarantee.
02Whale sharks: the rules, and why swimming can be suspended
The activity is regulated by NOM-171-SEMARNAT-2018, which sets schedules, zones, the number of boats and distances, according to Posta (November 24, 2025). Two rules are worth knowing:
- One trip a day. Zeta Tijuana (February 11, 2025) says that during the season certified boats may make only one whale shark trip per day.
- Suspension when few animals are present. The same report explains that the rule requires temporary suspension of non-extractive activities when five or fewer sharks are found in zone one of the sanctuary. In February 2025 Conanp reported “low presence”: after three surveys between January 20 and 27 it found between one and nine animals in the refuge area, and swimming was suspended for the second year in a row.
So before booking, ask what happens if swimming is suspended or there are no sharks that day: whether they refund you, change the date or offer another activity. A serious operator answers this clearly. Do not pay a large amount in advance to a personal account either.
03How to check that an operator is authorized
La Paz has formal operators and also people who sell tours without a permit along the waterfront. Posta (November 23, 2025) summarizes several checks anyone can make from their phone:
- Conanp list. Each season a list is published with the operator, the boat and the permit number, and it changes every year; check the current one.
- Federal authorization. Only operators who submitted their letter of adhesion to the management plan to Semarnat may work in the bay, and they must stay within the permitted area.
- Municipal badge. The municipality of La Paz said legitimate providers carry a badge with a QR code showing their registration, phone and address (Tus Buenas Noticias, November 25, 2025).
- National Tourism Registry and contract. Ask for the registration number and a clear contract or receipt; Profeco handles questions about contracts.
- On the boat. There should be a banner or sticker for the season showing the permit number, trained guides who give a safety briefing before anyone enters the water, life vests, a first-aid kit and departure from a recognized dock or marina.
If something does not add up, switch operators. And be wary of anyone who asks for a deposit by transfer to a personal account to “hold” your place.
04Grey whales in Magdalena Bay: a long excursion
Magdalena Bay is on the Pacific coast, not in the Bay of La Paz. That means seeing grey whales from La Paz is normally a long excursion with several hours on the road, leaving from the bay communities such as Puerto San Carlos, or a night away. We did not find an official source with travel times or routes, so confirm with the operator how long the transfer takes, who arranges it and what time you get back.
- Best time. Posta (December 16, 2025) places the most grey whale activity between January and March.
- What to ask. Whether the price includes the transfer, which boat is used, how long the boat outing lasts and whether there is shade and a restroom.
- Take it easy. It is a long day: if either of you tires easily or gets seasick, consider a calmer day in La Paz instead.
If you would like a sea escape without so much travel, the guide to a romantic weekend in La Paz suggests a day on the water at Espíritu Santo or Balandra.
05How to suggest it as a plan for two
A day at sea is a lovely plan when trust already exists. It is not a plan for a first date: it is several hours on a boat with no way of leaving when you like, so it suits someone you already know and have agreed it with. For a first meeting, choose a café, a walk on the waterfront or a dinner in public; the guide to meeting people in La Paz has ideas.
- Talk first. Ask what each of you would enjoy: seeing animals, swimming, taking photos or simply being outdoors. If one of you cannot swim or is nervous about open water, say so without embarrassment.
- Plan B. Decide what you will do if the outing is suspended or the sea is rough: a long breakfast, the waterfront or a museum.
- No pressure. Nobody has to get in the water; you can enjoy it from the boat.
- Clear arrangements. Agree who books and how you split costs before paying, so there are no surprises.

06Looking after the animals, and yourself
Enjoying marine wildlife means respecting its limits. The Conanp guidance reported in the press is simple: keep your distance, do not block a shark’s path, and do not touch or feed it (Tus Buenas Noticias, November 25, 2025). Always follow the guide’s instructions.
- Sea and sun. Bring sunscreen, a cap, water and a light layer; the wind at sea is cool even on a warm day.
- Seasickness. Eat lightly, watch the horizon and ask your doctor if you use medication for motion sickness.
- Your data. Avoid sharing your live location on social media; telling one trusted person where you are going and when you will be back is enough.
- If something does not look safe. Ask to return to port; a serious operator does so without argument. For complaints about charges or contracts, consult Profeco.
Seasons, rules and authorizations change every year: confirm them with the authorities and the operator before you book. We have no relationship with any operator, venue or outlet mentioned, and we do not recommend or list businesses.
