A romantic weekend in La Paz: the Malecón, the sea and an unhurried dinner

La Paz is best enjoyed on a small scale: a walk along the Malecón at sunset, a day on the water and an unhurried dinner. This guide proposes a date weekend in La Paz, Baja California Sur, with a Friday-to-Sunday plan, alternatives depending on weather and energy, and the details worth confirming before you go. Hours, permits and the rules for the island and the beaches change, and we give no excursion prices because they depend on each operator.

In short

  • Friday: the Malecón at sunset and dinner. Saturday: a day at sea at Espíritu Santo island (with sea lions at Los Islotes) or Balandra. Sunday: a long breakfast downtown.
  • Espíritu Santo is about 26 km from La Paz and the boat ride takes roughly an hour; swimming with sea lions is allowed from mid-October to the end of May.
  • Balandra has slots of 450 visitors and a MX$120 digital wristband; rules change, so confirm with CONANP.
  • Whale sharks are seen roughly from mid-November to mid-April.

01Friday: sunset on the Malecón and dinner

After arriving and dropping your bags, the Malecón is the best first plan: you walk, look at the water and decide later where to have dinner.

  • Seis Uno Dos. A rooftop bar and restaurant on the Malecón; Thoroughly Travel suggests arriving an hour before sunset. Confirm hours and reservations.
  • Quinta La Peregrina. Near Paseo Álvaro Obregón, with a sunset view and live music; Posta México (13 March 2025) lists Tuesday to Sunday, 14:00 to 23:00. Hours change: confirm them.
  • Other options. OpenTable lists Azotea, Oliva Al Mare (Italian) and Sea Side Bar Wine & Grill (Mediterranean), among others, in its romantic restaurants for La Paz. That is the platform’s list, not our recommendation.

If it is a first date, a coffee or a short walk goes easier than a long dinner. For ideas, see our guide to meeting people in La Paz.

In La Paz, the first plan of the weekend is the simplest: walk toward the sunset.

02Saturday: a day at Espíritu Santo island

Espíritu Santo island lies about 26 km northeast of La Paz. According to Thoroughly Travel (updated 13 October 2026), the boat ride takes roughly an hour, between 45 and 90 minutes depending on the sea. Most tours leave from the Marina de La Paz.

  • Sea lions at Los Islotes. It is the largest sea lion colony in the Sea of Cortez, with more than 600 animals, according to the same guide. Swimming with them is allowed from mid-October to the end of May; you may not climb Los Islotes or swim within 15 meters of it.
  • Season. Thoroughly Travel recommends October to April. June to August is breeding season: swimming with the colony is not allowed and most operators do not sail.
  • Permit. CONANP requires a paper wristband inside the park, about 150 pesos a day according to that guide; the tour usually includes it or collects it.
  • Booking. Book ahead with an operator that follows the park rules.

It is a long, sunny day: bring reef-safe sunscreen and a layer for the wind on the boat.

03Or Balandra, if you prefer a quiet beach

Balandra is the simpler alternative. According to Thoroughly Travel (13 October 2026), it is about 27 km and 30 minutes from La Paz.

  • Slots. 8:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 17:00, with 450 visitors per slot on a first-come basis and no reservations.
  • Wristband. A MX$120 digital wristband from CONANP.
  • Residents. The first Sunday of each month is reserved for La Paz residents.

Balandra’s rules change: confirm with CONANP before you go. Bring water, shade and walking shoes.

04If the season lines up: whale sharks

Whale sharks are seen roughly from mid-November to mid-April, most reliably between December and March, according to The Better Beyond (updated 4 September 2026).

  • Rules. Certified guides, 14 boats per slot, four slots a day and a maximum of five swimmers plus one guide per shark; keep 2 m from the head and 3 m from the tail, with no drones, flash or touching.
  • Minimum age. Most tours require age 8 or older.
  • Format. It is a day trip with little conversation in the water; it works better for a couple who already know each other.

We quote no prices: they vary by operator and season.

05Sunday: a long breakfast and downtown

To close the weekend without rushing, enjoy Sunday downtown.

  • Coffee and brunch. Thoroughly Travel mentions Dulce Romero (brunch and coffee), Doce Cuarenta Coffee & Bakery and Cuatro Altos. Confirm hours.
  • A walk and museums. The Regional Museum of Anthropology and History or the Whale Museum, on foot from the Malecón.
  • Ice cream on the Malecón. La Michocana and La Fuente appear in travel guides as casual stops.

Save the last walk for before the airport, about 11 km and 20 minutes from the city.

06If you have one more day: Todos Santos

Todos Santos is a little over an hour from La Paz, according to Live Like It’s the Weekend (updated 5 May 2026). It is a town with galleries, cafés and restaurants; for lodging, see our guide to discreet luxury hotels in La Paz and Todos Santos.

  • Before you go. A Fora guide recommends renting a car and driving by day, because there are few streetlights.
  • Whales. An Afar guide (2020) said humpbacks from October to January and in April, and gray whales from late January to mid-March. It is an old source: confirm with an operator.

Tourist fee: MX$488 per person since 1 January 2026, according to Eastern Progress (13 January 2026). Confirm the amount.

07If you would rather meet someone before the trip

Some people prefer to arrive at the weekend already knowing someone. For those cases, we work with mediated introductions and identity-verified profiles.

Premium Dating Mexico is a private introduction service mediated by the administrator: it is free for women, nobody pays for a meeting, identities are verified and photos are protected. Learn more on the home page.

Hotels, hours, age rules and permits change, so confirm everything with each venue before you book. We have no relationship with any of the places mentioned, and the listings are not paid.
