La Paz had 292,241 inhabitants in 2020 (INEGI via Data México), and Independent magazine described it in January 2026, according to GoLaPaz, as a calm city with a Malecón and historic center that you can walk.

• Everything is close, so people know each other and make recommendations: be considerate with everyone, not just your date.
• By day, unhurried. A coffee, a walk or an exhibition lets you talk without noise or commitment.
• Locals and expats turn up in the same cafés and promenades; if you are from elsewhere, a little Spanish opens doors even when they then switch to English.
• Watch the manners. A person’s warmth shows in how they speak to the waiter, to a stranger or to someone who arrives late.

02The Malecón, Jardín Velasco and downtown

The details for these places come from travel guides; opening hours are not published in the sources we consulted, so confirm them.

• Malecón Álvaro Obregón. The main promenade; Thoroughly Travel (updated 13 October 2026) describes it with beaches, parks, piers, benches and a kiosk where musicians often play, and highlights the marina at sunset.
• Jardín Velasco. A small garden on the main plaza, between the Cathedral and the Art Museum, with benches and a kiosk: an easy-to-describe meeting point.
• Downtown cafés. Thoroughly Travel mentions Dulce Romero, Doce Cuarenta Coffee & Bakery and Cuatro Altos.
• Museums. The Regional Museum of Anthropology and History of BCS and the Art Museum of Baja California Sur, for a quiet date where you talk as you walk.

03A simple plan for a first date

A short daytime plan lets you get to know each other without pressure.

• Coffee mid-morning or mid-afternoon. An hour to introduce yourselves, no commitment.
• A short walk on the Malecón. Something to look at and talk about, with a natural way out for both.
• Sunset, if there is chemistry. Seis Uno Dos, a rooftop bar-restaurant on the Malecón, is an example cited by Thoroughly Travel (arrive an hour before sunset); confirm hours and reservations.
• Each person arrives and leaves on their own.

Avoid planning a first date for a very crowded day: it is easier to talk calmly on a weekday.

04How to meet people in La Paz without relying on chance

An Expat Exchange forum (undated and anecdotal) mentions language exchange groups, sailing, fishing and diving clubs, cooking classes, markets and Malecón strolls as ways to meet people. Take it as a hint, not a guarantee.

• Sharing an activity before a date lowers the pressure: a language, a class or a club gives you something to talk about.
• Events. Carnival takes place in February on the Malecón; the 2026 edition ran from 12 to 17 February, according to Gringo Gazette (10 February 2026). We did not find the 2027 dates.
• Seasons. The Eastern Pacific hurricane season runs from 15 May to 30 November, according to the US National Hurricane Center; whale-shark season runs roughly from mid-November to mid-April, according to The Better Beyond (4 September 2026). Confirm before planning.
• If you are arriving from abroad, check the BCS tourist fee (Embrace It); the amount changes, so confirm it.

05Safety in La Paz: calm, but with common sense

The US State Department keeps Baja California Sur at Level 2, “exercise increased caution due to crime” (advisory of 6 September 2024), and suggests care in bars, nightclubs and casinos. Confirm the current advisory. We found no dating-fraud alert specific to La Paz and do not claim one.

• A public place, by day or early in the evening, and tell someone you trust where you will be.
• Your own transport to get there and back.
• Watch your drink. The US Embassy warned in June 2026 about adulterated drinks in Mexico (UnoTV, 5 July 2026); it is not specific to La Paz, but it applies to any bar.
• Do not share details or money with someone you have just met, and be wary of very fast intimacy or anyone who avoids a video call.
