01Before traveling to La Paz: fee and season

Two facts are worth having clear before you buy a ticket.

  • Tourist fee. According to Eastern Progress (13 January 2026), the Embrace It program went from MX$470 in 2025 to MX$488 per person from 1 January 2026. It applies to international visitors over 12 who arrive by air or land and stay more than 24 hours, is paid online at embraceit.bcs.gob.mx and generates a certificate with a QR code. It covers Los Cabos, Cabo San Lucas, La Paz and Loreto. The amount can change every year: confirm it.
  • Hurricane season. The eastern Pacific season runs from 15 May to 30 November, according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC).
  • When to go. Whale sharks are seen roughly from mid-November to mid-April, according to The Better Beyond (4 September 2026).

02Staying longer in La Paz: residency basics

For long stays, Mexico has its own rules. The page of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) for the Houston consulate (updated 7 January 2026) explains the following about the temporary resident visa.

  • Who it is for. Stays of more than 180 days and up to 4 years in Mexico.
  • How to apply. With an appointment through the MiConsulado portal, at the consulate where you file the application, with a valid passport and documents proving one of seven bases: economic solvency, scientific research in Mexican waters, an invitation from an institution, an international mobility instrument, family unity, real estate in Mexico or investment.
  • On arrival. Having the visa does not guarantee entry; officers may interview you. Within 30 calendar days of your entry you must apply for your residence card.
  • Work. Allowed only if the salary is paid abroad; a job paid from Mexico requires prior authorization from the National Immigration Institute (INM).

The page does not give solvency amounts or fees. The 2020 Census, in its extended questionnaire (Data México), recorded about 1,170 people who arrived in La Paz from the US in the previous five years, plus 140 from Cuba and 107 from Chile; the reasons most cited were housing, family and education. For your own case, check with the consulate, the INM or an immigration lawyer.

03Language and manners: how to go about it respectfully

What follows is editorial judgment, not a study: every person is different and no rule fits everyone.

  • A little Spanish opens doors. Greeting, thanking and asking politely is appreciated, even if they switch to English afterward.
  • Ask, do not assume. About intentions, pace and how soon to move forward: say it clearly and respect the answer.
  • Protect privacy. Do not post photos or details of someone you have just met without their permission.
  • Take it slowly. In a city this size, good treatment gets talked about, and so does bad treatment.

06If you prefer an introduction with verified identity

For people arriving from abroad who do not want to depend on apps or on chance, there is the option of a mediated introduction.

Premium Dating Mexico is a private introduction service mediated by the administrator: it is free for women, nobody pays for a meeting, identities are verified and photos are protected. Find out more on the home page.
