Romantic New Year in Mérida: townhouses, dinners and a calm January
Mérida is flat, walkable and, in December, cooler than the rest of the year: a good place for a calm year-end. This guide is for couples, or for two people who already know each other and travel by mutual agreement; it is not a first-date plan. It gathers dated information on the weather, the hotels we reviewed, restaurants we already described and what the local press reported about 1 January 2026, and says what we could not confirm. 31 December 2026 falls on a Thursday.
In short
- According to National Meteorological Service data (1951-2010), average highs are about 31 °C in December and January; the rainy season runs from June to October.
- We found no current official program for the night of the 31st in Mérida: ask your hotel and the restaurant.
- Posta (31 December 2025) reported that on 1 January 2026 the Centenario Zoo was closed and the Villa Navideña at La Plancha and the ice rink on Paseo de Montejo resumed on 2 January.
- According to a June 2026 media summary, Yucatán appeared at Level 1 of the U.S. State Department scale; confirm the current advisory.
01A calm getaway, with someone you already know
This guide assumes you already know the person you are travelling with and that you both chose the plan. It is not a guide for meeting someone for the first time; for that, coffee or a daytime meal in a public place is lighter, and the first date guide helps you prepare.
- Weather. According to National Meteorological Service data (1951-2010), average highs are about 31 °C in December and January, and December to February are the coolest months. September is the rainiest, with about 183 mm; by December the rainy season has passed.
- Pace. The centre is flat and walkable; longer distances, such as the haciendas, call for a car or transfer.
- Dates. We use 26 December 2026 to 2 January 2027.
Always ask each venue whether it opens on holiday dates: hours change.
Mérida is best enjoyed on foot, slowly and with a table booked.
02Where to stay: Centro, Paseo de Montejo and haciendas
Our discreet hotels guide for Mérida describes the areas and hotels; here is the summary for a couple's year-end.
- Townhouses in the centre. TreeHouse Boutique Hotel (15 rooms, adults only), Decu Downtown (8 suites) and Hotel Sevilla (21 rooms, with a rooftop bar; street-facing rooms are noisier than courtyard ones).
- Paseo de Montejo. Rosas & Xocolate, in two historic mansions, and Hotel Sureño, near the avenue.
- A townhouse in La Ermita. CIGNO, with 10 rooms, a courtyard pool and another on the roof, according to CultureVulture.
- A hacienda outside the city. Chablé Yucatán, in Chocholá, about 35 minutes from Mérida, according to the Yucatán tourism site.
Ask about age and visitor policies, whether there is parking or valet, what the cancellation terms say in high season and what is said to anyone who calls asking for you.
03The night of the 31st and 1 January
We found no official 2026 New Year program for Mérida that we can cite, and we will not invent one. The prudent course is to ask your hotel what dinner or reception it offers and to book a table early. We already described these tables in the Mérida first-date guide, with data from Yucatán Today of January 2026 and June 2025; confirm whether they open on the 31st and their holiday hours:
- Proyecto Casa 459 (bookings via OpenTable), Vana (a wine-centred menu) and Oliva Enoteca (homemade pasta and a marble bar), in the centre.
- Casa de Piedra, Hacienda Xcanatún, at kilometre 12 of the Mérida–Progreso road; the 2025 article said it opened every day from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., but confirm the year-end hours.
- Rosas & Xocolate, with a rooftop terrace and live music Wednesday to Saturday according to that article.
For 1 January, Posta (31 December 2025) reported that you could walk around the Plaza Grande, with fewer people in the early hours, and stroll Paseo de Montejo or Gran Parque La Plancha; that some cafés in the Corredor Gastronómico would probably open, and that the Centenario Zoo would not. It also said the Villa Navideña at La Plancha and the ice rink on Paseo de Montejo resumed on 2 January. That is the 2026 calendar: this year's may differ.
04If you extend the trip: Mérida Fest
If your trip stretches into January, Yucatán Today reported that Mérida Fest 2026 ran from 5 to 18 January, with concerts, dance, theatre and literary presentations at various venues, including the Plaza Grande, and free entry according to the listing, marking the city's anniversary. That page covers only the 2026 edition: we do not know whether it repeats in the same way, so confirm dates and program on the municipality's site.
Even without a festival, January is still a good time to explore the centre, the museums and unhurried dinners, with the usual care about hours and reservations.
05Arriving, getting around and staying safe
From the airport, taxis are the only vehicles allowed to pick up passengers inside the terminal; Uber, DiDi and InDrive pick up on Avenida Aviación, and there is a Va y Ven bus. From Cancún, flights take about 50 minutes and the drive is about 3 hours.
- At night. Book the ride back or ask the restaurant or hotel for a trusted taxi; for haciendas and restaurants on the outskirts, go and return with your own transport.
- Travel advisory. According to a June 2026 media summary (Riviera Maya News, 10 June 2026), Yucatán appeared at Level 1, “normal precautions”, on the State Department scale. It is a secondary source: check travel.state.gov.
- The basics. Tell a trusted person where you will be and when you return, watch your drink and let each person keep their own way to leave. If something makes you doubt, read the red flags.

06Plan it together, without rushing
A good year-end is decided in the conversation beforehand: where to sleep, what to eat on the 31st and how much to rest. If you are travelling alone and have not met anyone yet, it does not have to be now.
Premium Dating Mexico is a private introduction service mediated by the administrator: it is free for women, nobody pays for a meeting, identities are verified and photos are protected. Learn more on the Mérida page.
Venues, hours, programs and advisories change: confirm everything with each hotel, restaurant or organizer and in official sources before you go. We have no relationship with any of the places mentioned and the listings are not paid.
