Night of the Radishes 2026 in Oaxaca: how to plan a date on a magical night

Few Mexican festivals have the charm of the Night of the Radishes: figures carved from giant radishes, dried flowers and corn husks around the Oaxaca Zócalo on the eve of Christmas Eve. It makes a visual, photogenic date, but also a crowded one. This guide explains what it is, when it is in 2026, how to avoid the longest lines, how to combine it with Oaxaca’s other December celebrations and how to look after yourself in a crowd. It is a plan for two people who already know each other, or who want to get to know each other in a public place, always by mutual agreement.

In short

  • The Night of the Radishes is Wednesday 23 December 2026 in the Oaxaca Zócalo; it would be the 129th edition (inferred, confirm) and the 2026 hours are not yet published.
  • In 2025 it ran 3:00 to 9:00 p.m.; guides suggest arriving around 4:00 or 5:00 p.m. and expecting a long line (45 to 90 minutes to see it all).
  • Combine it with other dates: Virgen de Juquila (8 December), posadas (16 to 24) and the Christmas Calenda (24 December).
  • Watch pockets and belongings, bring a warm layer, book your hotel early and confirm everything with the Oaxaca de Juárez municipality.

01What the Night of the Radishes is

The Night of the Radishes is a contest and exhibition held every 23 December in the Zócalo of Oaxaca de Juárez. According to Riotimes Online (21 October 2026), the contest dates to 1897, when Mayor Francisco Vasconcelos made it an official competition; before that, market growers carved radishes to attract Christmas shoppers. The works are made of radishes, dried immortelle flowers and totomoxtle (dried corn husk), and only residents of Oaxaca state may compete.

The same report says that in 2025 the city counted 137 works across the traditional, free, youth and children categories. For a date, it is a visual plan: you need no art knowledge to have something to talk about.

  • When it fits. For two people who have already talked, want a special plan and do not need a loud restaurant.
  • When it does not. If someone is overwhelmed by crowds, or the line sounds like a nuisance, choose a quieter Oaxacan plan instead; our first-date guide for Oaxaca has ideas.

02Date, hours and what we know about 2026

The sources we checked agree on the date, but almost everything else is still to be confirmed:

  • Date. Wednesday 23 December 2026, in the Zócalo (Plaza de la Constitución), according to Riotimes Online (21 October 2026) and Mexico Travel and Leisure (Oaxaca festivals guide, 20 April 2026). It would be the 129th edition; that count is inferred from 2025 being the 128th.
  • Hours. The 2026 program is not published yet. In 2025 the exhibition ran from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m.; confirm on the municipality’s official channels in December.
  • Entry. It was free in 2025; the city had not yet announced 2026 access rules.
  • Still to confirm. The parade date, concerts, prizes and number of entries.

Mexico Travel and Leisure recommends arriving between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m. because the line is long, and estimates the walk-through takes 45 to 90 minutes. Riotimes Online reports lines thousands deep in 2024 and suggests standing on the outer edge of the plaza, on the restaurant side, to avoid the wait, though the view is partly blocked.

03A date plan for 23 December

An example afternoon for two people who know each other a little; adjust it to the official schedule once it is published.

  • 2:30 p.m., light lunch. A meal at a restaurant in the center, with a reservation if possible, so you do not join the line hungry or rushed. For restaurant and café ideas, see the Oaxaca dating guide.
  • 4:00 to 4:30, line. Arrive before it fills. The line is part of the plan too: there is time to talk, and you can grab a hot coffee beforehand.
  • 5:30, walk-through. Go slowly, each pick a favorite piece and compare. Asking "which one would you take home?" always works.
  • 7:00, dinner or a snack. A nearby place with ponche, tamales or hot chocolate, if the atmosphere allows. If the line runs long, ask for a table to be held or leave dinner for another day.
  • 8:30, close. A clear thank-you and each of you goes to your own hotel, with your own transport.

If you have already had several dates and want more time together, dinner and a stroll through the lit streets of the center is a good close; the decision is both of yours and nothing has to be stretched.

04Other December festivals in Oaxaca

Mexico Travel and Leisure (20 April 2026) lists these dates, all free; confirm times because the guide was published months ago:

  • 8 December, Virgen de Juquila. A pilgrimage in Juquila, about 150 km from Oaxaca City. It is a deeply devout religious festival: if you go near it, do so respectfully and avoid intrusive photos.
  • 16 to 24 December, posadas. Neighborhood celebrations across the city. In Oaxaca posadas mix with La Rama, in which children decorate branches and sing carols in the street in exchange for aguinaldos, according to Chilango (2 December 2024). More on how to get invited in our posadas guide.
  • 24 December, Christmas Calenda. A downtown event; the guide gives no further detail, so confirm route and time.
  • 25 December and 1 January. City-wide celebrations.

The guide notes that Oaxaca receives many Mexican families over the holidays, so booking a hotel early matters. To choose where to stay, see our hotels in Oaxaca guide.

05Crowd safety and practical tips

Riotimes Online recommends keeping your phone and wallet in front pockets, avoiding overloaded temporary stands and bringing a warm layer, because the city is at high altitude and December nights are cool.

  • Meeting point. Agree on one in case you get separated, and swap numbers before joining the line.
  • Your own transport. Each person arrives and leaves independently. Do not share lodging details on a first date.
  • Drinks. Do not accept drinks from strangers or leave yours unattended. If someone pushes to continue the night, you have the right to say no.
  • Footwear and pace. Wear comfortable shoes for cobblestones and standing in line, and allow generous time: crowds move slowly and nothing is gained by rushing.
  • Common scams. Be wary of unofficial "guides" who charge in advance; book tours and lodging only through official channels.

Before traveling, check the US State Department advisory at travel.state.gov: according to Riotimes Online (21 October 2026), Oaxaca state was at Level 2 (exercise increased caution), with no restrictions for Oaxaca City; confirm the current level.
