Dating in Oaxaca: advice for a city of markets, neighborhoods and festivals
Oaxaca is a city you walk slowly: a historic center of churches and old houses, neighborhoods with their own rhythm, markets and a festival calendar that fills the hotels. That makes a first date here feel more like a stroll than a dinner. This page gathers practical advice drawn from our city guides, with sources and dates in view and special attention to how to visit with respect what for many families is an intimate celebration.
In short
- A first date in Oaxaca works well as a stroll: Santo Domingo, the Zócalo, the Jalatlaco neighborhood or a market morning.
- The Guelaguetza (July) and Day of the Dead fill the city; book ahead and confirm dates and official programs.
- Traditions are not a backdrop: ask permission before photographing people, altars or graves and do not step on graves.
- To get back at night, arrange the ride with your hotel and avoid informal taxis, as a travel guide cited in our Day of the Dead guide recommends.
01A city you walk, and a calendar that rules
Oaxaca’s historic center concentrates old houses, former convents turned hotels and churches such as Santo Domingo, and almost everything is done on foot. The pace changes with the calendar: our hotel guide notes that the Guelaguetza takes place in July (the 2026 Lunes del Cerro were 20 and 27 July) and that Day of the Dead, on 1 and 2 November, also fills the city.
- High-demand dates. If your date falls on one of them, book a table and a place to stay well ahead.
- Less rush, more stroll. A two-hour first date with a walk is enough.
- Plan B. If there are parades or closed streets, have an alternative place to talk.

02Where to meet: Santo Domingo, Jalatlaco and the market
These places appear in our Oaxaca guides. Confirm hours and events before you go.
- Santo Domingo and the Zócalo. Easy landmarks, public, with cafés and restaurants nearby.
- Jalatlaco. The federal tourism ministry named it Oaxaca’s first Barrio Mágico (UnoTV, 2023); it is known for its 17th-century church, colonial houses and façade murals. It is a neighborhood for walking.
- Markets in the morning. One travel guide suggests the Sunday market in Tlacolula; it is a suggestion, not an official event, so confirm hours.
- A day trip, such as Hierve el Agua, 1.5 to 2 hours by car from the city, only once there is trust and with reliable transport.
For a first meeting, pick a public place with an easy exit. Avoid meeting somewhere remote or private the first few times.
03A first-date plan: market morning and chocolate
During Day of the Dead, the state government recommended starting the food route with chocolate and pan de yema and following with a tlayuda. It is a simple plan that works all year: something to eat, something to see and little pressure.
- A hot chocolate or a coffee and pan de yema in mid-morning.
- A short walk through the market or along a street with murals, buying from local producers and artisans: that way the money reaches the people who make things.
- A light lunch if the conversation flows; if not, a kind goodbye.
- A single glass of mezcal to taste, if you both want; there is no hurry and no obligation to drink.
A clear goodbye closes well: say thanks, say whether you would like to meet again and respect the answer.
04Conversation and respect: traditions are not a backdrop
Oaxaca invites you to talk about food, crafts, travel and festivals. Listen more than you tell and ask what things mean to her, without assuming.
- Ask permission before photographing people, altars or graves, and do not use flash at vigils.
- Do not step or sit on graves. In cemeteries, walk along the aisles.
- Sober clothing at night at vigils; Halloween costumes are out of place, according to a travel guide we cite.
- Cemeteries are not a place for a first date. They are family spaces: go as a visitor, at a respectful distance.
Our guide to Day of the Dead in Oaxaca explains how to attend with respect. An example first message: “Hi, Marisol. Would you like a chocolate and pan de yema on Sunday morning near Santo Domingo? If you prefer another plan or day, no problem.”
05Safety and trust in Oaxaca
Check the current U.S. State Department advisory for the state of Oaxaca at travel.state.gov before you travel, because levels change by state and over time.
- A public place, and tell someone you trust where you will be.
- Arrange the ride back with your hotel when you go to a cemetery or a valley town, and avoid informal taxis for the return, as a guide cited in our Day of the Dead guide recommends.
- Long day trips such as Hierve el Agua: leave early, with reliable transport and with someone you already know.
- Mezcal calmly. Order food and water, and watch your drink.
And the usual rule: nobody should ask you for money in advance. More in red flags.
