Romantic hotels in Oaxaca: townhouses, former convents and neighborhoods for a getaway

Oaxaca de Juárez suits a quiet getaway: a historic center you can cover on foot, hotels set in old townhouses and former convents, and neighborhoods with a rhythm of their own. This guide helps you choose where to sleep depending on the atmosphere you want, with hotels the press and the Michelin Guide single out for their character, and what to check before you book. It is written for adults who already know each other or who have a clear, agreed plan.

In short

  • The historic center concentrates townhouses and former convents turned hotels; Jalatlaco has a neighborhood feel and San Felipe del Agua offers a hotel away from the noise, at the foot of the mountains.
  • The Michelin Guide’s 2025 Key selection includes three hotels in Oaxaca City with one Key each: Pug Seal Oaxaca, Grana B&B and Hotel Casa Santo Origen.
  • From Mexico City the flight takes about an hour and the bus roughly 6.5 to 8.5 hours; book early if you overlap with the Guelaguetza Lunes del Cerro or with Day of the Dead.
  • Before booking, ask about parking, the pet policy and cancellation terms, and whether the hotel is adults only.

01A Oaxaca getaway: when it makes sense

For a first date, the best choice is a public place that is easy to leave: a coffee, a restaurant or a drink. A trip with a hotel comes later, once there is trust. If you are still getting to know each other, start with our first date guide.

  • When there is already trust. An anniversary, a celebration or a weekend you both want and have talked about clearly.
  • When the plan is to walk. Oaxaca’s historic center is covered on foot, and several hotels in this guide are a few blocks from Santo Domingo.
  • Always by mutual agreement. Bring up the trip with respect and no pressure; her being free to say no or suggest something else is part of a good date.

What follows is a selection by atmosphere and location, not a recommendation of where to have any particular date.

A good hotel accompanies the weekend; it does not decide it for you.

02Where to stay, by area

In Oaxaca de Juárez the area changes the experience a lot. Here are three options, each with real hotels.

  • Historic center (Santo Domingo and around). The choice if you want to step out and walk to restaurants, bars and churches. Here you will find Quinta Real Oaxaca (5 de Mayo 300, beside the Santo Domingo plaza), Pug Seal Oaxaca (Porfirio Díaz 212) and Grana B&B (Labastida 118).
  • Jalatlaco neighborhood. The federal tourism ministry named it Oaxaca’s first Barrio Mágico (UnoTV, 2023); it is known for its 17th-century church, colonial houses and murals on the facades. One example is Los Pilares Hotel, at Curtidurías 721-A.
  • San Felipe del Agua. Where the northern suburbs meet the foothills of the Sierra Madre de Oaxaca, according to the Michelin Guide. It is home to Hotel Casa Santo Origen. There the plan is the hotel itself, and to get to the center you will need a taxi or a car.

If you like to dine, walk and come back late, choose the center. If you prefer calm, look at Jalatlaco or San Felipe del Agua.

03Hotels with character

A selection of hotels in Oaxaca de Juárez that guides and the press single out for their architecture, scale or location. Room counts come from the Michelin Guide and from the hotels themselves.

  • Pug Seal Oaxaca. Twenty rooms around a central courtyard with murals, at Porfirio Díaz 212, in the center. It holds one Michelin Key and offers parking and a concierge.
  • Grana B&B. Fifteen rooms in an 18th-century residence on the west side of the city (Labastida 118). The Michelin Guide says it is “rather more grand than the bed-and-breakfast tag ordinarily implies”. One Key.
  • Hotel Casa Santo Origen. Eight suites, each named after a region of Oaxaca, in San Felipe del Agua. It has a pool, a library and a wood-burning fireplace, and it is adults only. One Key.
  • Quinta Real Oaxaca. Ninety-one rooms in the convent of Santa Catalina de Siena, which dates from 1576, in the historic center. It has a pool, restaurants and a mezcal bar, according to The Luxury Editor’s review and the group’s information.
  • Los Pilares Hotel. In Jalatlaco (Curtidurías 721-A), with a pool and a restaurant; according to its Expedia listing, the Zócalo is about a 15-minute walk away.

The Michelin Guide describes the one-Key category as “a very special stay”. It is a useful reference, not a guarantee: confirm services and conditions with each hotel.

From Mexico City, Oaxaca is about 472 km by road. These are the times reported by GeckoRoutes (updated September 2026).

05What to check before booking

These are normal questions for any guest; hotels are glad to answer them.

  • Parking. If you are driving, ask whether there is space. According to the Michelin Guide, Pug Seal Oaxaca and Hotel Casa Santo Origen offer free parking; confirm that is still the case.
  • Adults only. Hotel Casa Santo Origen is, according to Michelin. If it matters, ask.
  • Pets. Grana B&B admits them for a fee; Pug Seal Oaxaca does not. Check the policy before traveling with one.
  • Exact location. Ask for the address and work out how far it is on foot to the Zócalo or Santo Domingo; in San Felipe del Agua you will need transport.
  • Cancellation. Read the terms, especially if your dates overlap with the Guelaguetza or Day of the Dead.
  • Visitors and privacy. Ask how the hotel handles guest data and what its policy is for visitors.
