Romantic hotels in Guanajuato: townhouses in the center and getaways with a view
Guanajuato City is compact, with narrow streets, plazas and theaters that you cover on foot, and its historic center has a good range of hotels in old townhouses. This guide helps you choose where to sleep, which hotels the Michelin Guide and the press single out, how to get there from Mexico City and what to check before booking. It is written for adults who already know each other or who have a clear, agreed plan.
In short
- The historic center lets you walk from the Basilica to the Jardín de la Unión and the Juárez Theater; outside the center there are quieter hotels, but you will need transport.
- Nueve 25 Hotel Boutique, with 15 rooms and one Michelin Key, is the only Guanajuato City hotel in the 2025 Key selection for Mexico.
- From Mexico City it is about 340 km: 4.5 to 5.5 hours by bus, 4 to 4.5 hours by car. The Del Bajío airport is about 27 km from the center.
- The Cervantino Festival is held in October; if you overlap, book well ahead. Parking in the center is scarce: ask before you book.
01A Guanajuato getaway: when it makes sense
For a first date, the best choice is a public place that is easy to leave: a coffee, a restaurant or a drink. A trip with a hotel comes later. If you are still getting to know each other, start with our first date guide.
- When there is already trust. An anniversary, a celebration or a weekend you both want and have talked about clearly.
- When the plan is to walk. The Michelin Guide places Nueve 25 near the Alley of the Kiss, the Jardín de la Unión and the Juárez Theater, three typical stops on a walk through the center.
- Always by mutual agreement. Bring up the trip with respect and no pressure; her being free to say no or suggest something else is part of a good date.
What follows is a selection by atmosphere and location, not a recommendation of where to have any particular date.
The city is best enjoyed on foot, without hurry and without a strict plan.
02Where to stay, by area
In Guanajuato the area decides how much you walk, how much noise there is and whether you need transport.
- Jardín de la Unión and the Basilica. The heart of the center. Hotel Boutique 1850 sits next to the garden and Edelmira is around the corner, according to Hotel Scoop’s November 2025 report. It is the most convenient for walking, though there is also more activity.
- Calle Positos and the university area. Casa del Rector is at Positos 33, between the university and the Alhóndiga. Near Alonso street, with its restaurants and bars, Casa Kloster opened in late 2024.
- Outside the center. Quinta Las Acacias is on Paseo de la Presa, a quiet, tree-filled area; Hotel Scoop describes it as outside the walkable part of the center, so you will need a taxi or a car.
If you want to go out to dinner and walk back, choose the center. If you prefer calm and do not mind a taxi, look outside it.

05What to check before booking
These are normal questions for any guest; hotels are glad to answer them.
- Parking. Mexico Travel & Leisure notes that the center is built into a canyon and that street parking is scarce and narrow; it recommends leaving the car and walking, and estimates 150 to 250 pesos a day at a lot (August 2026). Casa del Rector includes valet parking; Nueve 25 charges for parking, according to Michelin.
- Noise. There is nightlife near Alonso street. If you prefer calm, ask for an interior room.
- Slopes and stairs. It is a city on hills. If someone has limited mobility, ask what access to the hotel and the room is like.
- Adults only. Nueve 25 is, according to Michelin. Confirm it if it matters.
- Cancellation. Read the terms, especially if your dates overlap with the Cervantino.
- Visitors and privacy. Ask how the hotel handles guest data and what its policy is for visitors.
