Romantic hotels in Querétaro and Valle de Bravo: a weekend from Mexico City
Among the easiest getaways from Mexico City are three destinations with very different characters: the historic centre of Querétaro, the town of Bernal at the foot of its rock, and Valle de Bravo by the lake. This guide compares specific hotels in each, says how long it takes to get there and what to ask before you book so the weekend turns out the way you imagine it.
In short
- Querétaro is about 221 km from Mexico City; Bernal is about an hour from Querétaro city, and Valle de Bravo about 2 to 2.5 hours by road.
- In Querétaro, mansions in the centre stand out, such as La Casa de la Marquesa (16 rooms) and Hotel Madero (44 rooms); in Bernal, Casa Mateo and Santo Cuervo; in Valle de Bravo, La Casa Rodavento, adults only.
- Rain falls from June to September in Valle de Bravo and from April to September in Querétaro; January is the coolest month in Valle de Bravo.

01One weekend, three rhythms
You do not have to pick a single destination, but it is best not to try to see all three in one weekend.
- Querétaro, historic centre. About 221 km from Mexico City. Its historic monuments zone was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1996. It is ideal for strolling between plazas and restaurants.
- Bernal. A town at the foot of the Peña de Bernal, about an hour from Querétaro city and about four hours from Mexico City, according to Food & Pleasure.
- Valle de Bravo. About 140 to 156 km southwest of Mexico City, 2 to 2.5 hours on toll road 15D. It has been a Pueblo Mágico since 2005 and sits beside the reservoir.
Querétaro and Bernal combine well in one trip, since there is about an hour between them. Valle de Bravo lies in another direction from Mexico City and works better as a separate getaway.
Querétaro is for walking, Bernal for gazing at the rock and Valle de Bravo for sitting by the lake.
02Central Querétaro: mansions steps from the plaza
The historic centre has several hotels in restored buildings, with the advantage that you can walk to almost everything.
- La Casa de la Marquesa. 16 rooms at Madero 41, in a restored mansion with suites furnished with antiques. Some rooms have a balcony, a terrace or a hydro-massage tub, and it is a short walk from the Plaza de Armas and the cathedral.
- Hotel Madero. 44 rooms and a four-star rating, at Madero 69, opposite the Santa Clara church, in one of the oldest buildings on the street. It offers free parking nearby with a reservation, and valet.
- MO17 Hotel Boutique. A modern hotel with Nordic-inspired design behind a colonial façade, with a terrace and a roof garden, a short walk from the cathedral.
- Hacienda Jurica by Brisas. 45 rooms in a hacienda with arches, courtyards and gardens, with a pool with a waterfall and tennis courts, a hacienda option for guests who want gardens.
Querétaro Intercontinental Airport is about 16 km from the capital. Rain is concentrated from April to September.
03Bernal and the Peña: small houses with a view
Bernal is a small town, so the hotels are houses or groups of cabins. Many are chosen for the view of the rock.
- Casa Mateo. 18 suites in a restored 18th-century building, a former military barracks, in the centre of town, with a pool and a restaurant with a view of the rock, according to El Universal. It is part of the Cheese and Wine Route, according to México Desconocido.
- Hotel Santo Cuervo. 9 rooms in a boutique hotel of traditional architecture with a terrace overlooking the rock, according to El Universal.
- Hotel El Centenario Los Arroyitos. Colourful little houses with rooms, suites and cabins, a covered pool, a temazcal and views of the rock from across the grounds, according to Food & Pleasure (February 2025).
The sources cited are not from the same date, so confirm room counts, age policies and the view of the rock with the hotel before you book.
04Valle de Bravo: the lake and the forest
Valle de Bravo offers two styles: small hotels near the plaza and lodgings in the forest, away from the town.
- La Casa Rodavento. An adults-only boutique hotel in a restored early-20th-century mansion, a short walk from the plaza, with seven rooms according to Journey Mexico, a pool, a rooftop hot tub and a restaurant.
- Cinco Rodavento. A modern-design hotel on the edge of the centre, with the rooftop bar RÜF and a master suite with a freestanding tub and terrace.
- Rodavento. Tented suites in a forested valley by the lake, with a spa, fireplaces, kayaks and trails; it is family-friendly.
- Hotel Avándaro Golf & Spa Resort. A resort in the woods with golf, a restaurant and wooded views.
The drive from Mexico City takes 2 to 2.5 hours in normal traffic on toll road 15D; Highway 134 is more scenic and takes about 30 minutes longer. It is best to drive by day. Toluca airport is about 30 minutes away. Valle de Bravo gets most of its rain from June to September, May is the hottest month and January the coolest, with nights of 6 to 8 °C.
