Romantic getaways from Mexico City: where to go, two or three hours away
A few hours from Mexico City there are mountain towns, lakes and colonial cities that lend themselves to a weekend away. This guide gathers destinations that the travel press recommends for couples, with approximate distances where the sources give them and a few hotels with recognition. It is meant for adults who already know each other: a getaway is a plan for later, not for the beginning.
In short
- A getaway is proposed with respect and without pressure, once there is trust; it is nobody’s expectation.
- About two hours away: Tepoztlán (about 85 km), Malinalco (about 110 km) and Valle de Bravo (about 140 km).
- San Miguel de Allende adds two hotels with Michelin Keys in 2026: Rosewood (two Keys) and Hotel Amatte (one).
- Long weekends and February 14 fill the hotels: book months ahead.
01Before you suggest it
Proposing a trip for two is a big step. Do it when you already know each other and feel comfortable, with a clear plan and her freedom to say no or suggest something else.
- Talk about the practical side. What kind of room, how many nights, how to get there and who pays for what, taking nothing for granted.
- Day before night. A one-day plan is a lighter test than a night away.
- Let each of you be able to go back. Her being able to leave whenever she wants is part of trust.
For the early stages, start with a hotel for a drink in Mexico City or a first date.
A getaway is an invitation, not an expectation.
02About two hours from the city
- Tepoztlán, Morelos. About 85 km south, an hour and a half by car. A hike to the Tepozteco, the Ex Convento de la Natividad (a UNESCO World Heritage site), the market, and spas and temazcales; there are couples’ massage plans and dinner in the town.
- Malinalco, State of Mexico. About 110 km, nearly two hours by road. The Cerro de los Ídolos archaeological site with views of the valley, the Ex Convento Agustino and a pre-Hispanic food tour. Time Out México mentions the MaliKualli glamping, with a geodesic dome for two and a terrace with a jacuzzi.
- Valle de Bravo, State of Mexico. About 140 km, nearly two hours depending on traffic. A lake with sailing or kayaking at dawn and candlelit dinners by the water. Food & Pleasure mentions the Rodavento hotel, with picnics in the forest, meals on a floating raft and couples’ massages; Time Out, the spa at El Santuario Resort & Spa, with a temazcal.
The pueblos mágicos fill up on long weekends; if you can, go midweek.
03A little farther
- Taxco, Guerrero. Cable car, a ride in a horse-drawn carriage, a callejoneada, candlelit dinners and silver-jewelry workshops.
- Peña de Bernal, Querétaro. Under three hours away: climbing the Peña, the Cheese and Wine Route and dinners at hotels with a jacuzzi or spa, according to Food & Pleasure.
- Val’Quirico, Tlaxcala. A Tuscan-style development about 24 km from Puebla, for strolling.
- San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato. Evening walks along the colonial streets, dinners on terraces and a hot-air balloon flight at dawn, according to Time Out. In 2026, the Michelin Guide awarded Keys to Rosewood San Miguel de Allende (two Keys) and Hotel Amatte (one). It is a longer trip: plan it calmly.
For San Miguel, consider more than one night; it is a destination to explore without hurry.
04How to book with good judgment
- Months ahead for long weekends, special dates and Valentine’s Day.
- Confirm each hotel’s policies: cancellation, ID and visitors.
- Look after the journey. If you drive, rest and set out in daylight; if not, ask about transfers.
- Discretion. Do not post photos of her or of the place without her permission.
