Romantic New Year in Puerto Vallarta: areas, hotels and the night of the 31st

Puerto Vallarta mixes beach, cobbled streets and a bay that lights up on 31 December. This guide is for couples, or for two people who already know each other and travel by mutual agreement; it is not a first-date plan. It gathers what dated sources say about high season, the areas and hotels we have already reviewed, how last year's celebration went according to the local press and what to sort out beforehand: transport, bookings and safety. 31 December 2026 falls on a Thursday; confirm this year's program.

In short

  • Mexico News Daily (2024) recommends November to April and notes that this is also high season; Mexico Travel & Leisure advises booking 2 or 3 months ahead for winter.
  • Last year the Jalisco government and the municipality held a Malecón celebration with fireworks and a drone show, according to Out & About PV (2 January 2026).
  • Mexico Travel & Leisure (19 April 2026) warns that transport demand rises at Christmas, New Year and long weekends.
  • The State Department puts Jalisco at Level 3 (advisory of 6 September 2024) and lists Puerto Vallarta among tourist areas: confirm the current advisory.

01Who it is for and how to frame it

This guide assumes the couple, or the two people, already know each other and want to travel together. It is not a guide for meeting someone for the first time: for that, a daytime meal by the sea or a walk on the Malecón is lighter, and the first date guide helps you prepare.

  • Talk before booking. What each person wants on the 31st, how much to spend and who handles the reservations.
  • One plan per day. Mixing a beach day, a dinner and a morning with no schedule keeps the agenda from crushing the trip.
  • Their own way out. Each person should be able to leave whenever they want, with their own transport and booking.

We use 26 December 2026 to 2 January 2027 as the reference.

A multi-day getaway is decided together, with the calendar in view.

02High season: when to book

Mexico News Daily (2024) recommends going from November to April and notes that this is also high season; from June to September it rains more. Mexico Travel & Leisure advises booking 2 or 3 months ahead for winter, especially small boutique hotels. If it is already October, availability for the 31st may be limited: there is no official occupancy figure and we do not invent one.

  • Check the year-end rules. Hacienda San Ángel, for example, publishes free cancellation up to two days before arrival on regular bookings and special rules from 21 December to 2 January. Read the conditions of the hotel you choose.
  • Minimum age. Casa Kimberly and Mousai are adults-only; Hacienda San Ángel is mainly adults-only and makes exceptions; Susurros del Corazón and the St. Regis accept families. Ask the exact rule.
  • Whales. From December to March humpback whales are seen in the bay, with January and February the most active months; tours fill up fast.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says the eastern Pacific hurricane season runs from 15 May to 30 November, so year-end falls outside it.

03Where to stay depending on the plan

Each area changes the trip. Our guides to romantic hotels and discreet hotels in Puerto Vallarta give more detail.

  • Romantic Zone and Centro. For dinner, a stroll along the Malecón and walking back. Casa Kimberly has nine adults-only suites; Hacienda San Ángel has twelve suites and a rooftop restaurant with views of the bay and the fireworks, according to its description.
  • Conchas Chinas and the south. More privacy and views, at the cost of depending on taxis or a car. Quinta María Cortez adds up to 22 rooms and suites, with an adults-only rooftop pool, but it has many levels and no elevator.
  • Marina Vallarta and the south, adults only. Casa Velas (18 and over, all-inclusive) and Hotel Mousai (also 18 and over).
  • Punta de Mita and Sayulita. Beach and quiet, with 50 to 60 minutes from the airport to Punta Mita according to Mexico Travel & Leisure.

Ask in writing for the real airport-to-hotel time and whether the hotel arranges it: from the airport to the Centro it is estimated at 15 to 25 minutes, more in traffic.

04The night of the 31st: what it was like last year

This year's program may change, but Out & About PV (2 January 2026) described the previous celebration this way; use it as a reference, not a promise.

  • On the Malecón. The Jalisco government and the municipality held “New Year, Jalisco Style”, with Mariachi Internacional CHG and Zona Kumbia before midnight; at 12, fireworks and a drone show, followed by a set by DJ The Blaze. Thousands attended.
  • Elsewhere around the bay. The piece mentions celebrations at the Los Muertos pier, the south coast, the Hotel Zone and Nayarit, across the bay.
  • Dinners. Ask restaurants well ahead whether they offer a special menu on the 31st and confirm hours, because they change on holidays.

With thousands of people on the Malecón, you may prefer to watch the fireworks from another point on the bay or from a restaurant or hotel terrace; that is our suggestion, not a recommendation from the piece. Decide in advance how you will get back: Mexico Travel & Leisure (19 April 2026) warns that transport demand rises at Christmas and New Year.

05Getting around and staying safe

Our services guide for Puerto Vallarta details the options; this is the summary.

  • Airport. Mexico Travel & Leisure describes official taxis with a fixed-fare ticket in the arrivals hall and warns of people in vests who offer transport and sometimes sell tickets at inflated rates: go to the official booth. Uber cannot be requested from inside the terminal.
  • In the city. Vallarta Adventures (17 July 2026) mentions Uber, DiDi and InDrive, street taxis without meters (agree the price before getting in) and pangas from the Los Muertos pier; to return to the hillside neighbourhoods at night it advises a taxi or app.
  • Emergencies. 911 or, for bilingual tourist assistance, 078, according to that source.
  • Travel advisory. The State Department (advisory of 6 September 2024; consulted 27 October 2026) puts Jalisco at Level 3 for crime and kidnapping; Puerto Vallarta is among the tourist areas and the advisory imposes no other restrictions on its staff in the state. Check travel.state.gov.

Tell a trusted person where you will be and when you return, watch your drink and avoid walking alone through poorly lit areas. If something about the plan or the person makes you doubt, read the red flags.

06Plan it together, without rushing

The best night of the year comes together with a few clear decisions: an area, a hotel, a plan for the 31st and a way back. Talking it through with the other person beforehand avoids last-minute stress.
