Romantic hotels in Puerto Vallarta: where to stay and how to plan the date

Puerto Vallarta has an advantage for a first getaway with someone: almost everything romantic is close by. A sunset on the Malecón, a dinner, a beach you can only reach by boat. This guide helps you choose a hotel by area and proposes a date weekend, with the hotels and plans backed by travel guides and the hotels’ own pages. Hours and rules change, so confirm before you go.

In short

  • Casa Kimberly, Hacienda San Ángel and BellView, in the Old Town and the Romantic Zone, each hold one Michelin Key in the Michelin Guide Mexico.
  • For something more secluded, Conchas Chinas and the south offer views and privacy, but need transport.
  • To the north, Punta de Mita and Sayulita (about 40 to 50 minutes from the airport) have quieter, beach-focused options.
  • A typical weekend combines a Malecón sunset, a boat-to-the-beach day and, from December to March, whale watching.

01What makes a hotel romantic

Before comparing names, it helps to know what matters most on a couple’s getaway.

  • A private terrace or Jacuzzi. Some small hotels include one in most of their suites.
  • Views. Of the bay, the Sierra Madre or the sunset from a rooftop.
  • Scale. A hotel with few rooms feels more like a home than a hotel.
  • Location. From the Romantic Zone you walk to dinner; in Conchas Chinas or Nayarit the plan revolves around the hotel and transport.

Mexico Travel & Leisure recommends booking 2 to 3 months ahead for winter, and puts Romantic Zone boutiques at 10 to 40 rooms.

02Romantic Zone and Old Town: hotels for walking at night

If you want to have dinner, stroll the Malecón and walk back, the Old Town and the Romantic Zone are the easiest starting point.

  • Casa Kimberly. Nine adults-only suites on a cobblestone street. It occupies the former homes of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton; most suites have a private Jacuzzi on the terrace and the Elizabeth Taylor Suite has its own pool and Jacuzzi. One Michelin Key.
  • Hacienda San Ángel. Twelve suites at Calle Miramar 336, with a rooftop restaurant looking out to the Sierra Madre, the bay and the fireworks. One Michelin Key.
  • BellView Boutique Hotel. It holds one Key in the same selection; check its website for the number of rooms and the age rules.

Los Muertos beach sits inside the Old Town: a local guide describes two kilometers of beach with restaurants and a pier lit at night, reached on foot from the Malecón.

03Conchas Chinas and the south: views and seclusion

South of the Old Town, the hills of Conchas Chinas and the south side offer more privacy than the Romantic Zone, at the cost of relying on taxis or a car.

  • Quinta María Cortez. In Conchas Chinas, together with Casa Tres Vidas it has 22 rooms and suites, three pools, a Jacuzzi, an adults-only rooftop pool and the La Ola restaurant and beach club. According to its website, a direct booking includes breakfast for two. It has many levels and no elevator.
  • Hotel Mousai. An adults-only all-inclusive resort (from age 18), with butler-serviced suites and private plunge pools, on the south side of the city.

Mexico Travel & Leisure recommends Conchas Chinas for couples who want romance and privacy over street access.

04Punta de Mita and Sayulita: beach and calm

To the north of the bay, in Nayarit, the plan is more about the beach than the city. The airport trip is 50 to 60 minutes to Punta Mita and 40 to 50 to Sayulita, according to Mexico Travel & Leisure.

  • Hotel Cinco. A 12-suite beachfront boutique hotel in Punta de Mita, with ocean-view terraces and two pools, according to Oyster.
  • Susurros del Corazón (Auberge Resorts Collection). With 82 rooms and suites and two Michelin Keys. It takes families, but has an adults-only pool.
  • The St. Regis Punta Mita. With 120 rooms and suites, about 41 km from the airport.

Sayulita is a beach town about 45 minutes north of the airport; it can be a day trip even if you stay elsewhere.

05A date weekend in Vallarta

This plan combines what travel guides recommend for couples. Adjust the order to the weather and the schedules of the moment.

  • Friday night: sunset on the Malecón. A Vallarta Adventures guide suggests reaching the Los Arcos amphitheater about 30 to 45 minutes before sunset and finishing with a stroll on the Los Muertos pier when it lights up.
  • Saturday: a boat-to-the-beach day. Las Caletas can only be reached by boat; Yelapa is about 45 minutes south, reached by panga from the Los Muertos pier or from Boca de Tomatlán; and Colomitos is about five minutes by panga from Boca.
  • Saturday night: dinner in the jungle. Rhythms of the Night, from Vallarta Adventures, is a multi-course dinner in an amphitheater at Las Caletas reached by boat. Book ahead.
  • Sunday: whales or a long breakfast. From December to March humpback whales are seen in the bay, with January and February the peak months; tours fill quickly. The rest of the year, a long breakfast in the Romantic Zone, on streets such as Basilio Badillo and Olas Altas.
  • Before you leave: elotes on the Malecón. An informal finish for the last night.

If it is a first date, a day on a boat is a relaxed way to get to know each other. To plan the conversation, see our guide to a first date with a younger woman.

06When to go and how to book

A few decisions before booking avoid surprises.

  • Season. Mexico News Daily (2024) recommends November to April and notes that this is also the high season. From June to September it rains more, and October tends to bring more hurricane warnings than other months.
  • Lead time. For winter, book 2 to 3 months ahead, especially at small boutiques.
  • Minimum age. Casa Kimberly and Mousai are adults only; Hacienda San Ángel is primarily so and allows exceptions; Susurros and the St. Regis take families. Ask for the exact rule.
  • Cancellation. Hacienda San Ángel publishes free cancellation up to two days before on regular bookings and special rules from 21 December to 2 January. Check the terms of the hotel you pick.
  • Transfer. The airport is 15 to 25 minutes from the Old Town; ask whether the hotel arranges the transfer.
