Date services in Puerto Vallarta: getting around well and choosing where to dine

Puerto Vallarta has one of the most walkable areas on Mexico's Pacific coast, the Romantic Zone, but also southern beaches reached only by sea and neighbourhoods on the hills. This guide gathers what named, dated sources say about transport, restaurants and precautions. The restaurants come from the blog of a tour operator, which also sells some of the experiences, so read them as examples and not as a neutral selection. Confirm everything before you book.

In short

  • At the airport, Mexico Travel and Leisure (19 April 2026) says you cannot request Uber from inside the terminal: you have to walk 100 to 150 metres to the public road; official taxis are paid in advance at a booth.
  • In the city, Uber, DiDi and InDrive operate, according to Vallarta Adventures (17 July 2026); street taxis have no meters, so you agree the fare before getting in.
  • To reach the southern beaches, water taxis leave from Los Muertos Pier or Boca de Tomatlán; they are paid in cash and you agree the price before boarding.
  • Jalisco is at Level 3 from the State Department (advisory of 6 September 2024), with Puerto Vallarta among the tourist areas without other restrictions for its staff.

01Leaving Puerto Vallarta airport

Mexico Travel and Leisure (19 April 2026) describes the options at Puerto Vallarta airport.

  • Official taxis (SETAVI). The booths are inside the arrivals hall. You pay in advance for a fixed-rate ticket and show it to the driver, which avoids haggling.
  • Uber. The source says you cannot request a ride from inside the terminal; you have to walk about 100 to 150 metres to the public road. It warns that availability is lower at night and that on long routes, such as Sayulita, it may be unreliable when demand surges.
  • Private transfers. They are booked online or with operators in arrivals, and the source recommends them for long trips, groups or heavy luggage; it notes that many Nuevo Vallarta resorts include pickup.

The same source warns about people in vests who offer transport inside the terminal and sometimes sell vouchers at inflated rates, with lines such as "the taxi counter is closed, but I can help you". Its advice is to ignore them and go to the official booth or walk to the public road. It also says demand rises at Easter week, Christmas, New Year and long weekends.

Before leaving the terminal, decide whether you will take an official taxi, a booked transfer or walk to the public road to request an Uber.

02Getting around: taxis, apps and water taxis

Vallarta Adventures (published 17 July 2026) summarises the ways of getting around the city. It is the blog of a tour operator, so it is worth cross-checking with other sources.

  • Street taxis. They have no meters; the source advises agreeing the fare before you get in. They can be useful after midnight, in areas with weak phone coverage and when it suddenly rains.
  • Apps. Uber, DiDi and InDrive operate in the city. Uber offers upfront pricing around the clock. The article cautions that InDrive may ask for a CURP when you sign up, which can block non-Mexicans.
  • Water taxis. Pangas leave for the south from Los Muertos Pier or Boca de Tomatlán, which the source describes as cheaper and more frequent. You pay cash in pesos and agree the price before boarding.
  • On foot. The Romantic Zone is the most walkable, according to the same source; the malecón is good for walking or cycling.

For safety, the same article suggests using official taxi stands or registered vehicles, checking the licence plate on an Uber and taking a taxi or app to return at night to the hill neighbourhoods, which have less light and less foot traffic. For emergencies dial 911 or, for bilingual tourist assistance, 078.

03Flowers and gestures in Puerto Vallarta

We did not find a reliable, current list of florists that deliver to hotels in Puerto Vallarta, so we do not name any. These are general practices that help avoid problems.

  • Hotel. Ask the concierge whether it can arrange flowers, a bottle or a gesture at the table or in the room, how much notice it needs and whether it accepts deliveries from outside suppliers.
  • Details in writing. Confirm name, address or room number, time and a description of the arrangement before paying.
  • Privacy. If you do not know the person well, do not send anything to their hotel or home; hand it over in person at the date.

For a beach dinner, coordinate the gesture with the restaurant instead of sending a third party unannounced.

04Where to dine: the Romantic Zone, the malecón and the views

Vallarta Adventures (published 20 May 2024; page modified 25 October 2025) ranks romantic restaurants in Puerto Vallarta. Dates matter: confirm they are still open and that their hours have not changed. These are the ones it mentions, with the atmosphere it describes.

  • La Cappella. Italian-Mexican cuisine in a courtyard overlooking Guadalupe Cathedral and the bay, in the Romantic Zone; formal dress code.
  • Café des Artistes. French-Mexican fusion by chef Thierry Blouet in a garden in the historic centre.
  • Le Kliff. Mediterranean-inspired cuisine with a sunset terrace on a cliff above the Bay of Banderas.
  • Mar y Vino. On the malecón, with tables by the sea and seating inside a pool.
  • The Iguana (La Iguana). A colonial courtyard in the old town, with live music and tequila and mezcal.

The same list includes Alma, by Rhythms of the Night, a candlelit dinner on the beach at Las Caletas reached by boat and booked as a tour with Vallarta Adventures; it is the most organised option, but also the most commercial. The Puerto Vallarta guide widens the hotel list. For a first date, a lunch or a daytime walk along the malecón is lighter than a dinner you must travel to by boat.

05Spa, nightlife and precautions

We did not verify any specific Puerto Vallarta spa for this guide, so we do not name one. The simplest option is to ask the hotel concierge about treatments for two and book ahead.

Vallarta Adventures (17 July 2026) describes the Romantic Zone as a compact area south of downtown, with the Cuale river to the north, and notes that nightlife builds through the evening with bars, live music and clubs until about 3 a.m. The article calls it comfortable with normal city awareness, and advises carrying only what you need, using well-lit streets at night and taking official taxis or apps.

The State Department (advisory of 6 September 2024; checked 27 October 2026) puts Jalisco at Level 3 for crime and kidnapping. Puerto Vallarta is listed among the tourist areas and the advisory says there are no other restrictions for its staff in the state; the restrictions apply to certain highway corridors and border areas. Check travel.state.gov before you travel. In addition, according to the US National Hurricane Center, the eastern Pacific hurricane season runs from 15 May to 30 November; if you travel then, check the forecast.

  • Tell someone you trust where you will be and when you plan to return.
  • Avoid walking alone through poorly lit areas when you finish.
  • If you drink, use a driver, an official taxi or an app, and watch your drink.

06A getaway as a couple, or meeting someone with discretion

Puerto Vallarta works well for a daytime date: the malecón, the Romantic Zone and a lunch by the sea. If you do not know the person yet, start with a public place, with your own transport, and decide on the spot whether to continue.
