Date services in the Riviera Maya: what to sort out before you arrive
A date in the Riviera Maya is decided by logistics: how you arrive, how you get back, who sets the table and how far everything is from the hotel. This guide gathers what named sources say about transfers from Cancún airport, the recent start of Uber in Tulum and Playa del Carmen, the private dinners some hotels offer and the current travel advisory. We do not recommend paid businesses: when we name one it is as an example, with the source and date. Confirm everything before you book.
In short
- At Cancún airport, according to Mexico Travel and Leisure (16 April 2026), Uber does not pick up inside the perimeter; the options are the authorised taxi booth, the ADO bus or a pre-booked private transfer.
- UnoTV and Excélsior reported that Uber began operating in Tulum and Playa del Carmen on 20 October 2026; the rules and post-promotion fares were not clear, so keep a backup plan.
- Some hotels offer private beach dinners with limited capacity and strict cancellation rules; ask the concierge for everything in writing.
- The US State Department asks for increased caution after dark in Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum (advisory of 6 September 2024).
01Leaving Cancún airport without surprises
Cancún airport is the gateway to almost all of the Riviera Maya. Mexico Travel and Leisure (16 April 2026) explains that the four terminals connect airside, but after clearing customs you generally have to go outside to change terminals, so confirm which one your driver will meet you at. These are the options it describes.
- Authorised taxi. You pay at the official booth inside the arrivals hall, with a fare by zone and per vehicle, not per person.
- ADO bus. The ticket desk is in arrivals and the stop is outside the terminal. According to the same source it runs from early morning until midnight, with departures to the Hotel Zone about every 30 minutes and less frequent service to Playa del Carmen and Tulum. It is not door to door.
- Pre-booked private transfer. A driver meets you in arrivals with a sign, tracks your flight and takes you straight to the hotel; the source recommends it for very late or very early arrivals and for long trips such as Tulum.
- Uber. According to the same source it does not operate inside the airport because taxi unions block it; outside the perimeter it works normally in Cancún and the Hotel Zone. For the return to the airport it recommends booking 30 to 45 minutes early because drivers may cancel.
Be wary of anyone offering transport at the exit. The same source describes people in polo shirts who quote below the official rate and then charge more, take you to a timeshare presentation or change the route. Pay only at the official booth or to the company you booked with.
If the transfer is sorted before you land, the date starts with a clear head.
02Getting around Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum
This part changed only days ago. UnoTV and Excélsior reported on 20 October 2026 that Uber began operating in Tulum and Playa del Carmen, with free rides for the launch. Neither outlet explains the operating rules or the fares after the promotion, and an operator of the Tiburones del Caribe de Tulum taxi organisation said the sector is going through a difficult situation because of the lack of passengers.
Tulum Times (updated 25 October 2026) recalls the background: before, taxis were the dominant local transport, with no meters and fares agreed verbally. Uber's first launch in Quintana Roo in 2016 was halted by legal disputes, the state passed reforms in 2023 that allow ride-hailing platforms, and in December 2023 a truce in Cancún let taxis join the app. The same article describes taxi blockades on Highway 307.
- With an unmetered taxi, agree the fare before you get in.
- Because Uber's operation in Tulum and Playa is recent, have a backup (a taxi from a stand, hotel transport or a driver) for peak hours and for the late-night return.
- If you are dining far from the hotel, book the return in advance instead of looking for transport when you finish.
03Flowers and gifts: what the hotel handles and what it does not
We did not find a reliable, current list of florists that deliver to hotels in the Riviera Maya, so we do not name any. The simplest route is usually the concierge at the hotel where the recipient is staying, or at yours if you are organising a dinner.
- Ask first whether the hotel can prepare flowers, a bottle or a gesture at the table or in the room, how much notice it needs and whether it accepts deliveries from outside suppliers.
- Ask for a photo of the arrangement or a written description before paying, and confirm the name, address or room number and the time.
- Think about privacy. Sending flowers to the room of someone you have only just met can feel intrusive. For a first date, a small gift handed over in person is usually better than a surprise at their hotel.
If the gift is for a beach dinner, coordinate with the restaurant or hotel rather than hiring a third party who arrives unannounced: many properties handle these details themselves.
04Private dinners and plans for two
Several hotels in the region offer private dinners and experiences for couples. These are sourced examples, not paid recommendations, and they are almost always designed for guests.
- Viceroy Riviera Maya. Its official page (modified 7 April 2026) offers a romantic beach dinner every day, with a welcome cocktail, a chef's tasting menu and a bottle of sparkling wine. It states that only five private dinners are available per day, that an in-room or villa-pool dinner requires a prior reservation and that cancellations must be made at least 72 hours ahead.
- La Casa de la Playa (Xcaret). A Xcaret blog article dated 9 February 2023 describes a private dinner in the Río Azul cenote with live jazz, a pairing dinner in the Vino de México Xcaret cellar and a couples' spa day at Muluk Spa. The article gives no booking details and does not say whether these are adults-only; confirm both with the hotel.
For any of these plans, ask about the cancellation deadline and what happens if the weather rules out the beach dinner. If it is a first date, a daytime meal in a public place is usually a better way to begin; see the guide to discreet hotels in Cancún and the Tulum guide to choose an area.
05Spa, grooming and precautions
A couples' spa or an hour's massage before dinner helps you arrive relaxed. Muluk Spa, at La Casa de la Playa, appears in Xcaret's 2023 article with double massage cabins, hydrotherapy and double in-room cabins; confirm that the service is still offered. At other hotels, ask the concierge about the spa and book ahead, especially at weekends.
On safety, the US State Department advisory (6 September 2024; checked 27 October 2026) puts Quintana Roo at Level 2, "Exercise Increased Caution", and says: "Exercise increased caution after dark in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum". It also notes that violence has risen in Tulum, that shootings between criminal groups have injured bystanders, and it recommends staying on well-lit pedestrian streets and in tourist zones. There are no travel restrictions for US government employees. Check travel.state.gov before you travel.
- Stay in tourist zones and well-lit areas when the date ends.
- Use booked transport, from the hotel or a provider you already know, to get back at night.
- Tell someone you trust where you will be, with whom and when you plan to return.
06A getaway as a couple, or meeting someone with discretion
If you are travelling as a couple, the list above saves you the most common problems. If you are travelling alone and do not know anyone yet, start with a public place in daylight, with your own transport, and decide on the spot whether to continue. A private dinner is not needed for a first date.

Frequently asked questions
Can I order an Uber from Cancún airport?
According to Mexico Travel and Leisure (16 April 2026), Uber does not pick up inside the airport because taxi unions block it; outside the perimeter it works normally. The alternatives are the authorised taxi booth, the ADO bus or a pre-booked private transfer. Confirm current rules before you travel.
Is Uber available in Tulum and Playa del Carmen now?
UnoTV and Excélsior reported on 20 October 2026 that Uber began operating in both towns, with free rides for the launch. They do not explain the rules or the fares after the promotion. Because the service is very recent, keep a backup plan for the night-time return.
What should I ask the hotel concierge for a date?
Ask whether it can prepare flowers, a table or a private dinner, how much notice it needs, whether it accepts outside suppliers and what the cancellation deadline is. As an example, Viceroy Riviera Maya states on its page (April 2026) that it offers only five private dinners per day and asks for 72 hours to cancel.
Is it safe to go out at night in Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum?
The State Department asks for increased caution after dark in all three (advisory of 6 September 2024) and recommends well-lit pedestrian streets and tourist zones. Use booked transport, tell someone you trust and check travel.state.gov before you travel.
