Romantic hotels in Playa del Carmen: villas, mangroves and a weekend for two
Playa del Carmen is a good starting point for a getaway as a couple: it has a pedestrian avenue with terraces, a ferry to Cozumel and, a few kilometres away, hotels among lagoons, mangroves and jungle. This guide sorts the area’s romantic hotels by zone, summarises what the Michelin Guide says about each one and collects ideas for a weekend. It does not include prices, which change by season.
In short
- Playa del Carmen is about 45 minutes from Cancún airport, and the more secluded hotels are north of the centre: Paseo Kanai, Mayakoba, Xcalacoco and Punta Maroma.
- Banyan Tree Mayakoba (159 villas), Rosewood Mayakoba (128), Etéreo (75), Maroma (63) and Palmaïa (234) hold two Michelin Guide Keys.
- Viceroy Riviera Maya (41 villas) is adults-only; most of the other hotels admit children.
- For a weekend: Fifth Avenue, the Mamitas and Punta Esmeralda beaches, the ferry to Cozumel, and cenotes and parks within an hour.
01Why Playa del Carmen works for two
Playa del Carmen combines a lively centre with secluded hotels a short distance away, which is uncommon at a beach destination.
- A walkable centre. Fifth Avenue is a car-free street with shops, terraces, galleries and live music, according to the official Mexican Caribbean site.
- Secluded hotels a few minutes away. Heading north, among mangroves and lagoons, there are hotels with villas and private pools.
- Excursions nearby. Xcaret, Xplor, Xel-Há, cenotes and underground rivers are within an hour, according to the same source.
This kind of hotel works for an anniversary, a getaway or a calm first meeting. Whoever joins you should know where they are going, have their own transport and be free to leave whenever they like.
A good weekend as a couple takes little: a good hotel, a good dinner and time without rushing.
02Where to stay: from the centre to Punta Maroma
Playa del Carmen is about 45 minutes from Cancún airport along highway 307, according to the official Mexican Caribbean site. The Maya Train has a station west of the centre. These are the areas where the hotels in this guide cluster:
- Centre and Fifth Avenue. Terraces, shops and what the official site calls the most varied nightlife on the Riviera Maya.
- Playacar, Mamitas and Punta Esmeralda. Beach areas with beach clubs, cenotes that open onto the sand and quieter stretches, according to the official site. Palmaïa is in Playacar.
- Paseo Kanai. Etéreo and The St. Regis Kanai, among the mangroves and outside the busiest part of town, according to the Michelin Guide.
- Mayakoba. A complex of hotels among lagoons at kilometre 298 of the highway, home to Banyan Tree and Rosewood; Banyan Tree is about 45 minutes from Cancún airport, according to the Michelin Guide.
- Xcalacoco and Punta Maroma. Viceroy, about 11 km north of Playa del Carmen, and Maroma and Chablé Maroma, further north, at Punta Maroma.
The further north, the more isolated the hotel and the longer the trip to the centre; decide based on how much you want to leave the hotel.
03Villas and lagoons: Mayakoba and Xcalacoco
If you want privacy with a romantic touch, these three hotels offer villas or suites with their own pool.
- Banyan Tree Mayakoba. 159 villas with private pools, surrounded by vegetation and lagoons, and two Michelin Keys. The beach is not next to the hotel: you reach it on a short boat ride along a canal. It admits children and has a kids’ club.
- Rosewood Mayakoba. 128 rooms and two Michelin Keys: white pavilions among lagoons, with suites that have a private plunge pool and a rooftop terrace, some on stilts over the lagoon. The listing does not describe it as adults-only.
- Viceroy Riviera Maya. 41 villas hidden in the woods and one Michelin Key. It is adults-only, although the listing mentions different minimum ages, so confirm the policy before booking. The beach has a reef, so you may have to walk to find soft sand.
At these hotels most of the plan happens inside the property; ask which restaurants and areas are open at the time you care about.
04Mangroves and barrier reef: Kanai, Punta Maroma and Playacar
For guests who prefer a resort with a spa, a beach and a natural setting, these five options are spread between the mangroves, the barrier reef and Playacar.
- Etéreo, Auberge Collection. 75 units (studios, suites and penthouses) and two Michelin Keys, in a mangrove forest linked to the beach by elevated walkways. Some rooms have butler service and an outdoor hot tub. It admits children and has a kids’ club.
- The St. Regis Kanai Resort. 124 rooms and one Michelin Key. The guide describes it as a retrofuturist spacecraft over mangrove wetlands, with butler service and beach access. It admits children of any age.
- Maroma, A Belmond Hotel. 63 rooms and two Michelin Keys, next to a barrier reef. It began as an architect’s dream house in the early 1980s, and its spa offers treatments on the private beach.
- Chablé Maroma. 70 rooms and one Michelin Key: freestanding villas with a private terrace and plunge pool, and about 180 metres of private beach. The listing does not state an adults-only policy and mentions cribs and babysitting on request.
- Palmaïa, The House of AïA. 234 suites and two Michelin Keys in Playacar, with a wellness focus and all-inclusive dining. It has adults-only facilities and also accommodates families; the listing says the minimum age for children varies by season.
If you want a more private feel, ask about the room location, the kids’ club and the spa hours.
05A weekend for two
With the hotel settled, the weekend comes together with a few pieces. All of them come from the official Mexican Caribbean site.
- An evening on Fifth Avenue. Dinner on a terrace, a walk along the pedestrian avenue and, if you want to keep going, a rooftop at sunset.
- A beach or cenote day. Playacar, Mamitas and Punta Esmeralda have beach clubs and cenotes that open onto the sand.
- Cozumel by ferry. The crossing takes about 45 minutes from the pier at the end of Fifth Avenue.
- A park or excursion day. Xcaret, Xplor, Xel-Há, cenotes and underground rivers are within an hour.
If it is a first date, start with a short plan, such as dinner on Fifth Avenue, and leave the rest for later.
06What to ask before you book
Hotels are glad to answer when the question is clear. None of these questions is unusual: they are what anyone who cares about privacy asks.
- What is the minimum age? Confirm it in writing: it can vary between hotels and between sources.
- How do I get to the beach? At Banyan Tree you go by boat along a canal and at Viceroy the beach has a reef; ask whether access is what you expect.
- What does the rate include? If it is all-inclusive, which restaurants and drinks are covered, and whether the transfer from the airport is included.
- What is the cancellation policy and the final total? Especially in hurricane season (1 June to 30 November, peaking on 10 September, according to the NHC), and with taxes and charges included.
- What about sargassum? The Quintana Roo Sargassum Monitoring Network publishes a traffic-light status by beach; its volume varies from beach to beach and from year to year.
- How do you handle guest information? Who sees the name and the ID, and what is confirmed to someone who calls asking for you.
