Sunny winter escapes in Mexico: where it stays warm from December to March

When the cold bites in the north or on the central plateau, Mexico has a simple answer: head to the coast. But not every coast is the same in winter. The Pacific is usually dry and sunny, the Baja California peninsula has cooler nights and more wind, the Caribbean is warm but rainier than many people expect, and the Gulf and the Yucatán coast get the northers. This guide goes through what to expect in each area between December 2026 and March 2027, when the hurricane season has ended, how to handle high season, and how to plan a getaway between two people who already know each other and decide together. We do not recommend or list businesses, and forecasts should be confirmed before you leave.

In short

  • The tropical cyclone season ended on November 30, 2026 in both the Pacific and the Atlantic, although Conagua notes that an off-season cyclone is rare, not impossible (UnoTV, October 8, 2026).
  • The Pacific (Vallarta, Costa Alegre) tends to give dry, warm days; the Caribbean is warm but with more rain; the Gulf and Yucatán get northers that can bring wind, swell and sudden drops in temperature.
  • December to March is high season: book early and have a plan B for a windy or rainy day.
  • This kind of getaway is for people who already know each other and agree on it; it is not a first-date plan.

01After the hurricanes: what to expect from the calendar

The official 2026 tropical cyclone season began on May 15 in the Pacific and June 1 in the Atlantic, and ends on November 30 in both basins, according to the Navy (Semar) as cited by UnoTV on October 8, 2026. That means that from December to March the risk of a hurricane is much lower than in summer and fall.

Lower is not zero: the same article notes that Conagua says off-season cyclones are less frequent but can happen. Before you book or buy, check the National Meteorological Service advisories and the cancellation terms of your lodging, and look at the forecast again a few days before you leave.

Winter brings its own kind of weather: cold fronts and northers, which mostly affect the Gulf of Mexico, the Yucatán peninsula and the Caribbean, and which we explain below.

02The Pacific: Puerto Vallarta, the Costa Alegre and Riviera Nayarit

January climate data for Puerto Vallarta shown by Best Date Weather, based on ten years of ERA5 reanalysis with Open-Meteo as its source, point to around 26 °C by day, around 18 °C at night, a sea temperature of about 25 °C and rain on very few days of the month (seen on November 2, 2026). These are averages; confirm the actual forecast for your dates.

  • What to expect. Sunny, dry days, pleasant afternoons and evenings that call for a light layer. The sea is enjoyable, although currents and swell vary from beach to beach.
  • Whales. In Bahía de Banderas the official humpback whale season runs from December to March, with the most activity in January and February, according to Azteca Jalisco (2026). Tours leave from the marinas; check that the operator is certified and confirm schedules and departures.
  • An unhurried plan. A stroll along the Malecón at sunset, lunch at a quiet beach or a boat excursion are easy plans to adapt to the pace of two people who already know each other.

On the central Pacific, winter is usually the best time to be outdoors; the challenge is the crowds, not the weather.

03Baja California Sur: sun, desert and cool nights

Los Cabos and La Paz share clear skies and little rain in winter, but remember they are desert by the sea: the temperature drops more at nightfall and the wind can feel cold on a terrace. Bring a light jacket even if the day is a beach day, and confirm the wind forecast if you plan to go out on a boat.

  • Whales. We cover the whale season in Los Cabos and La Paz in more detail in the Los Cabos whale-watching guide and the one for La Paz.
  • New Year. If you are thinking about the holidays, see the New Year in Los Cabos guide, which explains how to plan calmly for a very high-demand date.
  • Local differences. Water and wind change from one side of the peninsula to the other; ask your lodging how the beach is that day.

04The Mexican Caribbean: warm, but not always dry

In January, Cancún has temperatures of roughly 22 to 26 °C and a sea near 27 °C, according to Best Date Weather (seen on November 2, 2026), but it rains on about one day in five. In other words: warmth without excess, a pleasant sea and the chance of a shower. A Tus Buenas Noticias piece from December 11, 2025 describes the climate of Tulum and the Mexican Caribbean as warm and pleasant in December.

  • Rain and cold fronts. Cold fronts can bring cloud, wind and a choppier sea for a few days. A good plan B is an outing to cenotes or a museum instead of the beach.
  • Crowds. December and January concentrate a lot of demand; the best-known beaches fill up, so choose early hours.
  • Different plans. If you prefer less bustle, consider quieter areas away from the busiest tourist strip.

05Northers, Yucatán and the Gulf: the wind counts too

Northers (“nortes”) are masses of cold air that reach the Gulf of Mexico and the southeast during fall and winter. They can bring strong wind, swell, rain and temperature drops from one day to the next. The National Meteorological Service issues advisories when a “norte event” is expected.

To get a sense of how frequent they are, the Regional Port Authority projected 48 cold fronts for the 2025-2026 season in Yucatán, with the highest-risk period from November to March, according to Por Esto (October 3, 2025). That figure is from last season; it is a reference, not a forecast for 2027, so confirm with the SMN.

  • Mérida and inland Yucatán. In January, Best Date Weather shows around 28 °C by day and around 19 °C at night (seen on November 2, 2026): a pleasant climate for walking the city and visiting archaeological sites. The New Year in Mérida guide has ideas for those dates.
  • The Yucatán coast and Veracruz. These are the areas where a norte is felt most: wind, rough seas and temporary closures of water activities. Veracruz works well for city and food plans; see the Veracruz weekend guide.
  • What to do. Combine a sea day with a city day, and do not leave everything to the weather of a single day.

If the weather matters to you more than anything else, the central Pacific is usually the steadier bet at this time of year.

06Planning the getaway: bookings, pace and agreements

From December to March is high season on most coasts: more travelers, full airports and restaurants with waits. Booking early and choosing weekdays usually makes everything easier, and checking change and cancellation terms gives you room if the weather shifts.

  • Between people who already know each other. A getaway of several days is a plan for people who have already had several dates, feel comfortable and decide together. It is not a plan for meeting someone: for that, a public coffee or meal is enough. See the advice on consent and first dates.
  • Talk before booking. Agree in general terms on budget, pace, whether you share lodging or not, and what each person does if they would like a day to themselves.
  • Clear lodging. Book through official channels, keep your confirmations and avoid deposits by transfer to personal accounts.
  • Plan B. Have an indoor activity for a windy or rainy day, and share your itinerary with someone you trust.

Frequently asked questions

Is the hurricane season over by December?

The official tropical cyclone season ended on November 30, 2026 in both the Pacific and the Atlantic. Conagua notes that outside those dates a cyclone is less likely to form but not impossible, so check the National Meteorological Service advisories before you leave.

Which beach should I pick if I want to avoid wind and rain?

At this time of year the central Pacific, such as the Puerto Vallarta area, tends to be drier and steadier. In the Caribbean it can rain more and cold fronts stir up the sea for a few days, and on the Gulf and the Yucatán coast the northers are felt most. Always confirm the forecast for your dates.

Is it better to go in December, January or March?

December and January are the busiest months because of the holidays, and whales are most active in January and February on the Pacific. March tends to have fewer people, although northers can still appear on the Gulf. It is a matter of preference: crowds, weather or whales.

Does a beach getaway work as a first date?

No. A trip of several days is a plan for people who already know each other and agree on it. For a first date choose a public place that is easy to leave, such as a coffee or a meal. See our first-date advice to start calmly.

What should I pack for the coast in winter?

Light clothing, sunscreen, swimwear and a layer for the evening or the wind. In Baja California Sur and on norte days, a light jacket is welcome. If you are going out on a boat, bring something that cuts the wind.
