November long weekend: romantic escapes from Mexico City
The 2026 Revolution Day long weekend runs from Saturday 14 to Monday 16 November and overlaps with Buen Fin, Friday 13 to Tuesday 17. It is a good moment for a short getaway from Mexico City, but it also means crowded roads and fewer rooms. This guide suggests destinations an hour and a half to four hours away, a Saturday-to-Monday rhythm and what to book now. It is written for adults who already know each other and want to plan something together: a getaway is a step after the first date, never a way to start.
In short
- In 2026 the long weekend is Saturday 14 to Monday 16 November: the Federal Labor Law sets the 20 November rest day on the third Monday of the month, so the rule repeats every year.
- It overlaps with Buen Fin (Friday 13 to Tuesday 17): book your hotel and transport early and check cancellation terms.
- Options from Mexico City: Valle de Bravo, Tepoztlán and Malinalco, Puebla, and Querétaro with Bernal.
- This is a plan for adults who already know each other and agree on it calmly; if that is not you yet, start with a first date in a public place.
01The 2026 long weekend and the rule that repeats every year
Mexico’s Federal Labor Law sets the third Monday of November as the mandatory rest day for 20 November (Uno TV, 20 September 2026). In 2026 that Monday is the 16th, so the long weekend runs from Saturday 14 to Monday 16 November (N+). Because the rule is “the third Monday”, this guide works every year: only the dates change.
- Buen Fin 2026. It runs from Friday 13 to Tuesday 17 November, according to Uno TV, so your trip overlaps with shopping, discounts and busier roads and bus stations.
- Fewer rooms. For the 2025 long weekend, the Tourism Ministry projected national hotel occupancy of 68.2% and above 65% in destinations such as Puebla (Publimetro, 6 November 2025). That was a projection, not a final figure, but it shows what a long weekend looks like.
- Promotions. Last year Sectur and Profeco launched “La Gran Espada: El Buen Fin del Turismo”, with travel promotions. Check whether something similar runs this year and buy only through the hotel’s or platform’s official channels.
The practical rule is simple: decide early, book with flexible cancellation and do not leave transport for the last minute.
02Before you suggest the getaway
Proposing a trip together is a big step. It works best when you already know each other, feel comfortable and both want the plan, with her free to say no or suggest something else.
- Talk through the practical side. How many nights, what kind of room, how to get there and who pays for what, without assuming anything. Separate rooms are a perfectly valid option.
- A day before a night. Tepoztlán, Valle de Bravo and Puebla can be done as day trips; that is a lighter test than sleeping away.
- Everyone can head home. Her being able to leave whenever she likes, with her own transport if she prefers, is part of trust.
- Discretion. Do not post photos of her or the place without her permission.
If you have not met in person yet, this is not the stage: start with our tips for a first date and the first-date guide for older men, or a restaurant from the Polanco guide.
03Up to two and a half hours: Valle de Bravo, Tepoztlán, Malinalco and Puebla
These are the easiest places for three days: you arrive early on Saturday and come back on Monday without spending the whole day on the highway.
- Valle de Bravo, State of Mexico. 140 to 156 km southwest, 2 to 2.5 hours on toll road 15D in normal traffic; allow more on a long weekend. A lake with sailing or kayaking and dinners by the water. La Casa Rodavento is an adults-only boutique hotel with seven rooms according to Journey Mexico; Cinco Rodavento has the rooftop bar RÜF. Winter nights are cool (6 to 8 °C in January, the coolest month): ask about heating or a fireplace.
- Tepoztlán, Morelos. About 85 km south, an hour and a half by car. The hike to the Tepozteco, the Ex Convent of the Nativity (a UNESCO World Heritage site), the market and spas with temazcals. Magical towns fill up on long weekends: leave early and avoid the busiest hours.
- Malinalco, State of Mexico. About 110 km, close to two hours. The archaeological zone of Cerro de los Ídolos, the Augustinian ex-convent and a pre-Hispanic food tour; Time Out México mentions the MaliKualli glamping, with a dome for two.
- Puebla. About 163 km (GeckoRoutes): around 2 hours by bus and about 2.5 by car, more in traffic. A World Heritage historic centre with hotels in mansions such as Casona de los Sapos (sixteen rooms and three suites in a 17th-century house), Banyan Tree Puebla (one Michelin Key) and La Purificadora. 04With more time: Querétaro, Bernal and San Miguel de Allende
If you leave on Friday afternoon or very early on Saturday, the long weekend stretches to farther places. Here it is better to stay in one place and not try to see everything.
- Querétaro historic centre. About 221 km away. Its historic monuments zone has been a World Heritage site since 1996 and is walkable. There are hotels in mansions such as La Casa de la Marquesa (16 rooms) and Hotel Madero. GoPueblos lists the Feria Internacional Ganadera from 12 to 30 November: confirm the dates, because it can fill hotels.
- Bernal. A village at the foot of the Peña de Bernal, about an hour from Querétaro city and about four hours from Mexico City, according to Food & Pleasure. Casa Mateo (18 suites) is part of the Cheese and Wine Route.
- San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato. A longer trip; GoPueblos places the Jazz and Blues Festival from 11 to 15 November. In 2026 the Michelin Guide awarded Keys to Rosewood San Miguel de Allende (two) and Hotel Amatte (one). If the festival is on, book now and confirm the dates.
Hotel and travel details are in the guide to Querétaro and Valle de Bravo.
05A realistic Saturday-to-Monday rhythm
A long weekend works best with a few things well spaced out. This structure suits almost any of the destinations above.
- Saturday. Leave early to beat traffic, drop your bags, have lunch without rushing and book dinner. A walk or a boat ride in the afternoon, with free time.
- Sunday. The main plan: a historic site, a spa, a market or a lake outing. Book anything with limited places in advance.
- Monday. Leave calmly after breakfast and avoid the afternoon return, when the road tends to be busiest. If you drive, rest and leave in daylight.
If you are not driving, ask the hotel about transfers or check the bus from the terminal; on long weekends, tickets sell out.
06How to book sensibly on a long weekend
- Early. On long weekends the small hotels fill first; it is easier today than next week.
- Flexible cancellation. Check the terms and avoid rates that allow no changes, especially with Buen Fin in the mix.
- Hotel policies. Ask about parking, ID, visitors and whether it is adults-only or accepts children.
- Mind the drive. If you drive, leave in daylight and rest; in Valle de Bravo it is best to drive by day.
- No side payments. Book through the hotel’s or platform’s official channels and be wary of “last-minute” offers sent by message.
