Spa and wellness getaway from Guadalajara: hot springs by the lake
On the shores of Lake Chapala, south of Guadalajara, there are hotels with hot springs, jacuzzis, temazcal and spa. This guide gathers what travel press says about them and explains how to plan a restful getaway between two people who already know each other and have decided together. It is not a plan for a first date.
In short
- Adn40 (September 23, 2026) describes the Hotel Balneario San Juan Cosalá, with thermal springs, jacuzzis, temazcal and the Spa Tlalocan.
- Food & Pleasure (December 5, 2025) mentions other hotels with a spa on the Chapala lakeshore; confirm services and hours.
- It is a getaway for people who already know each other and decide together; never for a first date.
- If there will be alcohol, do not drive; hot springs are not for everyone.
01Before suggesting it
Suggesting a night away is a big step. It helps if you already know each other and feel comfortable, with the freedom to say no or propose something else.
- Talk about the practical side. Room, nights, how to get there and who pays for what.
- Start with a day. A meal by the lake or a walk is lighter than a night away.
- Either of you can go home. That freedom is part of trust.

The best plan for resting is the one you both want, with nobody feeling they owe anything.
02San Juan Cosalá: hot springs on the lakeshore
San Juan Cosalá is on the shores of Lake Chapala. According to Adn40 (September 23, 2026):
- Hotel Balneario San Juan Cosalá. Thermal springs feed the pools, the jacuzzis, the temazcal and the bathrooms in the rooms; the pools are between 34 °C and 42 °C. There are jacuzzis at the spa resort and in the guest area.
- Spa Tlalocan. It offers temazcal, hydrotherapy, reflexology and mineral mud, among other thermal experiences.
The article does not give the distance from Guadalajara, so confirm the journey before you plan. This is a press mention, not a recommendation from us.
03Other options on the Chapala lakeshore
Food & Pleasure (December 5, 2025) mentions four hotels with a spa in the area:
- Termal Cosalá Hotel & Spa, in San Juan Cosalá. A spa with seven themed jacuzzis, temazcal and body treatments, according to the article.
- Monte Coxala, in San Juan Cosalá. A spa with therapies, massages and facials, plus hot springs, according to the article.
- La Vita Bella Soul Spa Hotel, in San Juan Cosalá. A spa with massages and treatments; the article says a vein of thermal water comes from the mountain.
- El Chante Spa Hotel, in Chantepec. Spa and temazcal, according to the article.
If you already know the area, our getaways guide also mentions Chapala, about 35 minutes by car, with a malecón and local food, and the boutique hotel Defranca, in San Cristóbal, with a spa.
04Hot springs and temazcal: how to do it with care
Hot water and the temazcal are pleasant, but not for everyone.
- Tell them about your conditions. High blood pressure, heart problems, pregnancy or medication: check with your doctor first.
- Ease in gradually and get out if you feel dizzy or uncomfortable.
- Drink water and avoid alcohol before and during.
- Ask how it works at the venue and how long each session lasts.
With massages and treatments, you decide what is done and when to stop. Choose places with a written menu of services, trained staff and recent reviews; if anything hints at services that are not spa services, it is not the place for a date.
05How to travel and book sensibly
- Leave in daylight and check the road conditions.
- If there will be alcohol, do not drive; arrange a transfer or a ride.
- Book ahead for long weekends and special dates; see the Guadalajara long-weekend guide.
- Ask about day access if you are not staying: not every place offers it.
- Discretion and a heads-up. Do not post photos without permission and share your route with someone you trust.
