Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) in Guanajuato 2026: program, cemetery and where to stay
Guanajuato city marks Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) with a six-day festival, ofrendas, night tours and a whole town that climbs and drops through narrow alleys. Behind the events is a family tradition of remembrance that deserves respect. This guide gathers the 2026 program with its source and date, explains how to attend without intruding on people remembering their dead, organizes the city by area for your stay and flags something practical: the dates are almost here, and hotels around November 1 and 2 fill up. If you are coming, book now.
In short
- Guanajuato city's Day of the Dead festival runs from October 28 to November 2, 2026, its eighth edition, according to Excélsior (October 15, 2026).
- The state tourism ministry projects 250,000 visitors and an average hotel occupancy of 78% over the six days (Líder Empresarial, October 14, 2026).
- November 1 is a Sunday and November 2 a Monday. The "Al cruzar el Umbral" night tours at Santa Paula cemetery are in the program: confirm dates and capacity at the official source.
- The city is built in a canyon with little parking, so leave the car and walk. Book your stay now for these dates.
01A family tradition, not a party theme
Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) is a celebration of memory. Families clean and decorate graves, set up ofrendas with photos, flowers, candles and the food the person loved, and spend time together remembering them. In Guanajuato, as in much of the country, November 1 is dedicated to children who have died and November 2 to adults.
The city's festival coexists with that tradition but does not replace it. A few simple rules make for a better visit:
- A cemetery is a place of mourning. Keep your voice low, do not step into a family's ofrenda and do not photograph people who are crying or praying.
- Ask before you photograph. A grave or altar with family present is an intimate space; if in doubt, do not.
- It is not a costume. Face paint and catrinas are part of the tradition, but this is not a party theme or Halloween.
- Walk with care. The alleys are narrow and fill up; give way to families carrying flowers and candles.
With that attitude the visit is calmer for you and far more respectful to the people living the date.
Before it is a tourist event, it is the day a family remembers its own.
02Program of the 2026 Day of the Dead festival
Excélsior (October 15, 2026) published the program for the eighth edition, from October 28 to November 2, 2026 in Guanajuato city, with Japan and Playa del Carmen as guests. Líder Empresarial (October 14, 2026) cites the state tourism ministry, the Secretaría de Turismo e Identidad de Guanajuato, as the source of the festival figures. Some events with their dates:
- Wednesday, October 28. Official opening at 7:00 pm on Calle Subterránea, videomapping on the Basílica at 7:30 pm and ancestral music at 8:00 pm.
- Thursday, October 29. University ofrenda contest at 3:00 pm at the Mesón de San Antonio, a parade of calaveras and catrinas at 7:00 pm and the "Al cruzar el Umbral" night tour at Santa Paula cemetery at 8:00 pm.
- Friday, October 30. Lighting of the University's monumental ofrenda on its steps at 8:00 pm and Bon Odori performances at 9:00 pm.
- Saturday, October 31. A pet costume contest at 6:00 pm on the Túnel de Tradición stage and a night tour at Santa Paula cemetery at 8:00 pm.
- Sunday, November 1. Procesión de Angelitos at 7:00 pm, the play "Don Juan Tenorio" at the Mesón de San Antonio at 7:30 pm and a night tour at the cemetery at 8:00 pm.
- Monday, November 2. "El Tapete de la Muerte" on calle Sopeña from 7:00 am, "Ascenso de las Almas" at Plaza de la Paz at 3:00 pm, "Don Juan Tenorio" at 7:30 pm and "Retorno al Mictlán" on calle Sopeña at 10:00 pm.
The full program has more activities and may change, so check the festival's official site or the state tourism ministry's channels before you plan your hours. Excélsior also lists venues such as Calle Subterránea, Plaza de la Paz, calle Sopeña and Santa Paula cemetery.
03Santa Paula cemetery, the mummies and callejoneadas
The Panteón Municipal de Santa Paula is the center of the date in Guanajuato. The Museo de las Momias stands on its esplanade; N+ (November 14, 2025) places it there and published daily hours of 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, with no guarantee they still apply. The same outlet reported at the time that an INAH study pointed to damage to the mummies and a possible risk of the museum closing. Before you plan a visit around these dates, confirm that it is open and at what hours.
- Treat the mummies as what they are. They are people, not objects. Avoid jokes, attention-seeking selfies and light remarks, especially with families or children nearby.
- Night tours have limited capacity. The 2026 program includes "Al cruzar el Umbral" at Santa Paula cemetery on October 29 and 31 and November 1. In 2024, UnoTV reported that night tours were free and required registration at the Casa de la Cultura. Ask whether the 2026 procedure is the same.
- Callejoneadas. Student troupes (estudiantinas) walk the alleys at night, singing and playing for those who follow them. It is a city tradition, not a party service: ask at your hotel or at the Casa de la Cultura about times and prices, which we could not confirm for 2026.
- The Cervantino is over. The 2026 Festival Internacional Cervantino ran from October 3 to 18 (UnoTV, October 2, 2026), so the occupancy pressure that follows comes from Day of the Dead.
If you prefer a calmer plan, visit the cemetery in the morning or mid-afternoon when fewer people are there, and leave the night tours for a second evening.
04Where to stay in Guanajuato during Day of the Dead
The historic center holds nearly the whole program, and being within walking distance of the venues spares you from hunting for parking on steep streets. These are some small hotels we describe in our guide to romantic hotels in Guanajuato:
- Nueve 25 Hotel Boutique. Fifteen rooms at Ponciano Aguilar 69, adults only, near the Callejón del Beso, the Jardín de la Unión and the Teatro Juárez. It holds one Key in the 2025 selection of the Michelin Guide Mexico.
- Hotel Boutique 1850. Twenty rooms at Jardín de la Unión 7, with a rooftop terrace overlooking the Teatro Juárez.
- Edelmira Hotel Boutique. A 19th-century casona at Allende 7, with 27 rooms and a small indoor pool.
- Casa del Rector. Thirteen rooms at Positos 33, with a pool and a rooftop bar; valet parking is included in the rates, according to Hotel Scoop (2025).
- Quinta Las Acacias. A 19th-century estate at Paseo de la Presa 168, with 16 rooms, outside the walkable center: good if you prefer quiet, but you will need transport.
According to the state tourism ministry, the festival expects an average hotel occupancy of 78% over the six days (Líder Empresarial, October 14, 2026). The most requested dates are the weekend of October 31 and the nights of November 1 and 2. If you do not have a place yet, do not wait: compare availability and cancellation policies today, and book a flexible rate if you can.
05Getting there, parking and getting around
Guanajuato is about 340 km from Mexico City. Mexico Travel & Leisure (updated August 17, 2026) estimates 4 to 4.5 hours by car and 4.5 to 5.5 hours by bus from the Terminal Norte. The Del Bajío airport (BJX), in Silao, is 30 to 40 minutes away by road.
- Leave the car. The city is built in a canyon, with narrow, steep streets and little street parking. The same source estimates parking lots at 150 to 250 MXN a day (August 2026) and advises against using a car inside the city.
- Walk and use taxis. The alleys and tunnels are best done on foot; on festival nights, leave earlier than usual and wear comfortable shoes.
- Ask about transfers. Some hotels offer airport transfers; ask for the price and schedule in writing.
On safety, the US State Department keeps Guanajuato state at Level 3, "Reconsider Travel" due to crime; the latest issue date we found is September 6, 2024, and we reviewed it on October 26, 2026. The advisory states there are no other restrictions for its personnel in the state, including tourist areas such as Guanajuato city and San Miguel de Allende. Check travel.state.gov before you go and use ordinary judgment: reliable transport, company on night tours and your hotel's details at hand.
06Plan a respectful visit as a couple, or meet someone with discretion
A Day of the Dead in Guanajuato is best enjoyed slowly: an early dinner, a walk through the alleys before the crowds arrive and a night tour of the cemetery with someone you want to share it with. For a couple the combination is simple: a small hotel in the center, an unhurried schedule and respect for the families who are there for reasons very different from tourism.
If you are coming alone and would like to meet someone with discretion, Premium Dating Mexico can help. It is a private service in which the administrator personally introduces adults. It is not a mass dating app: identities are verified and you decide whether to take the next step.
Meeting costs women nothing, and nobody pays for a meeting. If you would like to know how it works before deciding, write to us and we will explain without commitment.
Premium Dating Mexico is a private introduction service mediated by the administrator: it is free for women, nobody pays for a meeting, identities are verified and photos are protected. Learn more on the home page.
Venues change, so confirm hours, reservations and policies with each hotel before you go. We have no relationship with any of the places mentioned, and the listings are not paid. Dates and hours come from Excélsior (October 15, 2026), Líder Empresarial (October 14, 2026), UnoTV (October 2, 2026 and October 30, 2024), N+ (November 14, 2025) and Mexico Travel & Leisure (August 2026): confirm everything on the festival's official site before you go.
