01A day to remember, before it is a spectacle

In San Miguel de Allende, as across Mexico, Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) is a date of family memory. Families visit the cemeteries on November 1 and 2, clean the graves, bring flowers and candles and stay to remember. UNESCO recognizes the festivity as intangible cultural heritage, and the city welcomes it with ofrendas, exhibitions and a parade.

Because the city draws many visitors and a large foreign community, it helps to keep in mind why so many people are gathered. A few useful rules:

  • Cemeteries are places of mourning, not attractions. Walk slowly, keep your voice low and do not step into a grave where family is present without an invitation.
  • Photograph with respect. Ask before photographing a family, a person praying or a child; if you are not sure, do not.
  • It is not Halloween. Catrina makeup is part of the Mexican tradition, but on Saturday, October 31 there are also costume parties that are not the same thing. It helps not to mix them up.
  • Arrive early to events. The center, especially around the Jardín and the Parroquia, fills up on the busiest evenings.

A visit that pays attention to these small rules is more enjoyable for you and for the people who take the date seriously.

In San Miguel, the ofrenda you see in a courtyard or a plaza began in a home where someone is missed.

02City program for Day of the Dead 2026

Guanajuato Travel, the state's tourism site, published San Miguel de Allende's program for October 31 to November 2, 2026 on October 20, 2026. Some events with date and time:

  • Saturday, October 31. "Pinta tu Calaverita", a workshop at the Casa de la Cultura del Chorro at 5:00 pm; music and poetry on the Jardín Principal esplanade at 6:30 pm and flamenco on the same esplanade at 8:00 pm.
  • Sunday, November 1. Ofrenda exhibition at the Jardín Principal at noon, the "Decora tu ofrenda" workshop at the Biblioteca Municipal at 4:00 pm, theater and puppets on the esplanade at 6:00 pm and music at 7:00 pm. At 8:00 pm there is an open-air screening of "Coco" in front of the old San Antonio Abad cemetery.
  • Monday, November 2. Ofrenda exhibition from 9:00 am at the Jardín Principal and the Desfile de Muertos y Catrinas at 5:00 pm, from the Cardo to the Jardín Principal. Afterwards, contemporary circus on the esplanade at 8:30 pm.

The program may change, so confirm times and venues with the municipality's official channels or Guanajuato Travel before you plan your day. Savant Magazine (October 21, 2026) also lists private and ticketed events, such as themed dinners, concerts and shows at restaurants, hotels and galleries, which depend on each venue.

03Cemeteries, ofrendas and the parade: how to attend with respect

Live in San Miguel (October 5, 2026) mentions the Panteón de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe among the city's cemeteries; Savant (October 21, 2026) also names the old San Juan de Dios and Luz Eterna, and says the cemeteries usually open from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm on November 1 and 2. Neither source gives official access rules, so ask locally.

  • In the cemetery. Enter as a visitor, not as a spectator: observe, do not interrupt and let the families lead the ceremony. If you book a guided tour, check that the operator is authorized and that families are respected.
  • At the Jardín Principal ofrendas. They are placed for display; still, read the labels, care for the flowers and candles and do not touch the elements.
  • At the parade. The Desfile de Muertos y Catrinas on November 2 leaves at 5:00 pm from the Cardo toward the Jardín Principal. Arrive early if you want a place to watch; the center's streets close and fill up.
  • At private events. Some homes and hotels host dinners and exhibitions with limited seats and a price. Confirm conditions and cancellation directly with the venue.

If you prefer a calmer plan, see the ofrendas in the morning when fewer people are there, and leave the parade for the afternoon of November 2.

04Where to stay in San Miguel de Allende during Day of the Dead

Almost the whole program is in the historic center, so staying there lets you walk. These hotels appear in our guide to discreet luxury hotels in San Miguel de Allende, which has more detail:

  • Casa de Sierra Nevada, Hospicio 35. It has 37 rooms and suites spread across 17th- and 18th-century houses, and two Keys in the October 2025 selection of the Michelin Guide Mexico.
  • Rosewood San Miguel de Allende, Nemesio Diez 11. Sixty-seven rooms with two Michelin Keys and the Luna rooftop tapas bar. According to Live in San Miguel, the hotel lists its Day of the Dead period as October 30 to November 3, 2026.
  • Maison Mexique, San Francisco 55A. Nine suites, only for guests over 18, with one Michelin Key.
  • Casa Blanca 7, Juárez 7. Ten suites in a 300-year-old house, with one Michelin Key; Michelin's listing says adults only, but confirm the policy with the hotel.
  • Hotel Matilda. Thirty-two rooms, with one Michelin Key (Visit San Miguel, November 22, 2025). Our Habitas, also with one Key, is a little outside the center.

Demand on these dates is high: Savant and Live in San Miguel warn that hotels, restaurants, tours and special dinners fill up in advance. We have no official occupancy figure for San Miguel, but with November 1 and 2 only days away, availability runs out. Compare your nights today and book a flexible rate if you can.

05Getting there, getting around and what to know about safety

Visit San Miguel says the Querétaro airport (QRO) is 60 to 70 minutes away, the Del Bajío airport (BJX) about an hour and a half and Mexico City 3.5 to 4 hours by road. Buses by ETN, Primera Plus and Flecha Amarilla run from Mexico City, Querétaro, León and Guadalajara.

  • Walk in the center. The streets are cobbled and close during events; comfortable shoes and leaving early help more than a car.
  • Arrive in daylight. If you travel by road, plan to arrive while it is light.
  • Ask about transfers. Some hotels arrange airport transfers: ask for price and schedule in writing.

On safety, the US State Department keeps Guanajuato state at Level 3, "Reconsider Travel" due to crime; the latest issue date we found is September 6, 2024, and we reviewed it on October 26, 2026. The advisory restricts its personnel in the south of the state (south of Highway 45D) and in Celaya, Salamanca and Irapuato, but states there are no other restrictions in the state, including tourist areas such as San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato city. Check travel.state.gov before you go.

06Plan a respectful visit as a couple, or meet someone with discretion

San Miguel is a city for walking unhurried: a slow breakfast, ofrendas in the morning, staying on for the parade and returning to a quiet hotel. For a couple, a small hotel in the center and a relaxed schedule make all the difference, along with respect for those who come to remember their own.

If you are traveling alone and would like to meet someone with discretion, Premium Dating Mexico can help. It is a private service in which the administrator personally introduces adults. Identities are verified and you decide whether to take the next step.

Meeting costs women nothing, and nobody pays for a meeting. If you would like to know how it works before deciding, write to us and we will explain without commitment.

Premium Dating Mexico is a private introduction service mediated by the administrator: it is free for women, nobody pays for a meeting, identities are verified and photos are protected. Learn more on the home page.
