Slow dating in Mexico: how to date at a calm pace
After years of swiping, many people want the opposite: to meet someone without rushing, with a real conversation and without feeling that a clock is running. That is what people call slow dating. It is not a secret technique or a rigid rule; it is an attitude: go step by step, choose calm plans and let trust grow at its own pace. This guide explains what it is, what the data says, how to do it in Mexico (with daytime plans and messages between dates) and how it differs from an ambiguous situation in which nobody defines anything.
In short
- Slow dating means getting to know someone without hurrying: calm dates, no stopwatch, real conversation and no pressure to define everything quickly.
- In Tinder's Year in Swipe 2025, 35% prefer a walk or a coffee for the first date, according to OneDigital (15 December 2025).
- Going slowly does not mean going without clarity: moving at a calm pace and saying what you want are compatible, and that is what separates slow dating from an ambiguous situation.
- It works at any age, including after 40: daytime plans, public places, your own transport and simple messages between one date and the next.
01What slow dating is (and what it is not)
Slow dating is a way of getting to know someone that puts quality ahead of speed: a few well-chosen dates, in calm settings, with time to talk. Time Out Barcelona (5 February 2026) describes it as a relaxed, in-person way of meeting people, in restaurants or on terraces, with no time limit and usually in small groups, and contrasts it with speed dating, which uses five- to ten-minute dates. The underlying idea is the same in any city: without a stopwatch, conversation comes more naturally.
It helps to be clear about what it is not. It is not waiting weeks without writing to «play hard to get». It is not avoiding every conversation about what you are looking for. And it is not a list of rules such as «don't talk on the phone before the third date». Every person and every situation is different.
- It is choosing short, calm plans (a coffee, a walk, a daytime lunch) instead of marathon message threads.
- It is leaving room for the other person to feel comfortable, and for you to notice how you feel around them.
- It is moving forward when both people want to, not when an app, a calendar or an outside expectation pushes you.
- It is not hiding your intentions or keeping things vague: you can go slowly and still speak plainly. We explain this in our guide on how to say what you are looking for from the first date.
If you are coming from a stretch of tiredness with dating apps, the guide on dating app fatigue may also help.
Going slowly is not going without direction: it is choosing the pace instead of letting the app choose it.
02What the data says: why it is trending
Slow dating is not an isolated fad; it is part of a wider shift toward in-person dating with intention. These are the figures we were able to verify, with their source and date. They come from Tinder surveys of young people and from market studies, so they describe trends, not every person or every age.
- A calm first date. In Tinder's Year in Swipe 2025 report, 35% prefer a walk or a coffee for the first date and 28% enjoy having a «crush» (that hopeful stage before anything is defined), according to OneDigital (15 December 2025). The survey covered 4,000 people aged 18 to 25 in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, so it is not a Mexican sample; the OneDigital piece does list Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Cancún and Querétaro among the most active Tinder cities in Mexico.
- Fatigue with apps. The study «El Amor en los Tiempos de las Telecom 2026» by The Competitive Intelligence Unit found that 54.4% of Mexican users describe themselves as detractors of dating apps, mainly because of the lack of real interaction and the difficulty of arranging meetings, according to Expansión (13 February 2026).
- Back to in person. Infobae (13 March 2026) quotes psychologist Mica Mendelevich: interest in meeting face to face is gaining ground over apps, and the main complaint is reportedly not safety but lies about age, height or interests. It is an article with an Argentine context, but the trend matches what the Mexican studies describe.
None of these figures says slow dating is better for everyone. They say something simpler: many people want dating with less noise and more conversation, and calm places are the natural setting for that.
03How to practice it: pace, first dates and how many you need
Practicing slow dating takes nothing special. It takes deciding, before you go out, what pace feels good to you, and saying so naturally.
- A short daytime first date. A coffee or a walk of one to two hours lets you find out whether there is chemistry without committing the whole afternoon. If it goes well it stretches by itself; if not, it is easy to say goodbye kindly. To plan that first meeting, see our first date guide.
- One plan per date, not three. Resist the urge to fill the afternoon: dinner, a bar and something after dinner. A single plan leaves room for the next date to have something to look forward to.
- Observe more than you impress. Slow dating is about listening: how the person treats the people serving them, how they talk about their family and their work, how they react when something goes differently than planned. According to Year in Swipe 2025, 54% say being rude to restaurant or café staff is the biggest turn-off, which is a useful detail to watch.
- There is no magic number of dates. There is no right count before deciding whether to continue. A more useful question is: do I want to see this person again, and do I feel at ease with how things are going? If the answer is yes two or three times in a row, you have information; if you doubt, say so respectfully.
- Each person arrives and leaves on their own. Calm dates do not change the safety basics: a public place, your own transport and telling a trusted person. Our guides on safety and trust and on consent and respect go into detail.
Going slowly also does not mean avoiding physical or emotional closeness forever; it means each step is decided by both of you, without rushing and with a real possibility of saying «not yet».
04Daytime plans and first dates by city
The best slow dating plans share three things: they happen by day or in the early evening, in a public place, and they have a natural ending. Here are general ideas and where to go deeper for your city; always confirm hours and reservations with each place, because they change.
- Coffee and a walk. A coffee in a walkable neighborhood, followed by a stroll through a park or a quiet street. For Mexico City, the step-by-step plan is in our guide to a first date in Mexico City.
- Daytime lunch. A light lunch at a place with a terrace or courtyard lets you talk without noise. For Monterrey, start with the first date in Monterrey guide, and for Guadalajara with the first date in Guadalajara guide.
- Museum, gallery or bookshop. Having something to look at lowers the pressure and gives you things to talk about. See museum and culture dates for ideas by type of plan.
- Daytime plans with uncertain weather. If it rains or is hot, have an indoor plan B; you will find several alternatives in our daytime date ideas.
- A gentle activity. A walk, a ceramics class or a weekend market. These plans have more movement than a table and help if face-to-face conversation makes you nervous.
A practical rule: if you both wanted to keep going at the end, even better. The first date does not have to be memorable; it is enough for it to be pleasant and for both of you to want to know more.
05Between dates: messages, clarity and how it differs from an ambiguous situation
The time between dates is where slow dating is tested. Going calmly is not disappearing: it is keeping light, sincere contact without turning the chat into a parallel date lasting hours.
- One message after the date. A «I enjoyed meeting you, thank you for the afternoon» is enough. If you want to see the person again, suggest something concrete with two options for the day. If not, a kind closing is better than silence. For useful phrases, see Spanish phrases and WhatsApp for a first date.
- A similar conversation rhythm. If one person writes all day and the other once a day, someone will feel uncomfortable. You can talk about it lightly: «I like to write less and see each other more».
- Say what you are looking for when the time comes. Calm does not mean secret. From the second or third date, a sentence like «I'm interested in getting to know you slowly, and I'd like it to go somewhere» reassures both people. This is what is called «clear coding»: 60% of the people Tinder surveyed want clear communication of intentions from the start, according to OneDigital (15 December 2025).
- Do not confuse calm with ambiguity. Year in Swipe mentions the «situationship» as casual relationships with no pressure to define the status. Slow dating is something else: it moves slowly, but toward something, and each person knows what they want. If you wonder whether you are in an ambiguous relationship, read what a situationship is and how to leave or define it.
If there are signs of control, pressure or anger when you set a limit, that is not going slowly: it is a warning sign. Read what a healthy relationship looks like.
06Slow dating after 40: advantages and adjustments
For people who are 40, 50 or older, going calmly often feels natural: there is work, children, history and a life already built. These are some adjustments that help.
- Limited time, concrete plans. A midday lunch or a coffee after work respects full schedules and is still a real date.
- Honesty about where you are. Saying calmly whether you are divorced, widowed or just starting again, and what you expect, avoids misunderstandings. More advice in dating after 40 in Mexico.
- Do not compare with your old pace. Habits have changed: today it is common to chat on WhatsApp before meeting and to confirm the day before. Adapting does not mean losing your style.
- Protect your data. Sharing your address, your company or personal photos early is not part of going calmly. Do it when there is trust, not before.
One advantage of maturity is that many people already know what matters to them. That clarity is compatible with going slowly: you can be sure of what you want and still want to get to know someone over time.
07If you would rather have someone introduce you to a person at a calm pace
If you live alone, have little time and prefer not to spend hours on apps, there is another way to go slowly: a mediated introduction. Premium Dating Mexico is a private introduction service handled by the administrator: it is free for women, nobody pays for a meeting, identities are verified and photos are protected. It does not promise results or replace the calm of getting to know each other: it just removes the noise. Learn more on the home page and in how a private matchmaking service works, and compare it with mediated introductions versus dating apps.
The places, hours and reservations mentioned in this guide change: confirm everything with each place before you go. The figures cited come from surveys and studies by the sources named and describe trends, not every person. We have no relationship with any place mentioned.
Frequently asked questions
What is slow dating?
It is a way of getting to know someone without hurrying: calm dates, no stopwatch, real conversation and no pressure to define everything quickly. Time Out Barcelona (5 February 2026) describes it as a relaxed, in-person way of meeting people, as opposed to speed dating.
How many dates should I have before deciding whether to continue?
There is no right number. A useful question is whether you want to see the person again and whether you feel at ease with how things are going. If the answer is yes several times in a row, you have information; if you doubt, say so respectfully.
Is it the same as a situationship?
No. A situationship is a casual relationship with an undefined status. In slow dating you move slowly but clearly: each person says what they want when the time comes and both know where things are going.
What is the best plan for a calm first date?
A coffee or a walk of one to two hours, by day, in a public place and with your own transport. According to Tinder's Year in Swipe 2025, 35% prefer this option for the first date (OneDigital, 15 December 2025).
Does it work after 40?
Yes, and it often feels natural: midday plans, honesty about where you are and simple messages between one date and the next. There is more advice in our guide to dating after 40.
