How to say what you are looking for from the first date: "clear coding" in Mexico

"Clear coding" is the name Tinder gave to a simple trend: saying clearly what you are looking for, whether a serious relationship, something casual or a friendship, instead of staying with "let's see what happens". For many people, especially after 40, it is a relief: less guessing and less wear and tear. This guide explains what it is, when and how to say it without scaring or pressuring, with sample phrases you can adapt, notes on courtesy in Mexico and what to do when the answer is a no. Clarity is not a demand: it is information that helps both people decide.

In short

  • Saying what you want is not pressure: it is information. According to Tinder's "Year in Swipe 2025" report, 60% ask for clear communication about intentions and 64% think emotional honesty is what the dating world needs most.
  • You do not need to say everything in the first message: a short sentence at the start and a fuller conversation once there is trust usually works better.
  • Use your own words and keep them positive ("I am looking for a relationship with a future"), without ultimatums or lists of conditions, and leave room for the other person to answer.
  • If the answer is a no, thank them and close kindly; taking a no calmly is part of being clear.

01What "clear coding" is and why it matters

Tinder's "Year in Swipe 2025" report, shared for Mexico by OneDigital (15 December 2025), calls "clear coding" openly stating what you are looking for, whether a serious relationship, something casual or friendship, instead of ambiguity such as "let's see what happens". Búsqueda (6 January 2026) lists it as one of four trends for 2026 under the name "Las cosas por su nombre" ("calling things by their name"). The survey covered 4,000 people aged 18 to 25 in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia: it is not a study of Mexico or of mature adults, so treat it as a trend signal, not a rule.

The most quoted figures are these: 64% think emotional honesty is what the dating world needs most and 60% ask for clear communication about intentions from the first contact. In addition, 56% value honest conversations and 45% want more empathy after a rejection.

Mexico has a similar context. According to the study "El Amor en los Tiempos de las Telecom 2026" by The Competitive Intelligence Unit, reported by Expansión (13 February 2026), 54.4% of the people who know dating apps describe themselves as detractors, mainly because of the lack of real interaction and the difficulty of arranging meetings. Part of the wear and tear comes from not knowing what the other person is looking for.

Saying what you are looking for has three practical advantages: it filters out different expectations before you invest time and emotion, it makes it easier for the other person to be equally clear, and it lowers the risk of falling into a situationship that neither of you chose.

Saying what you want does not scare off the right person: it saves both of you time.

02When to say it and how much to say

Clarity does not mean telling everything at once. An order that usually works:

  • Before the first date: one short sentence. In the profile or the first messages, a line such as "I am looking to meet someone calmly and with the intention of something serious" lets whoever answers know what it is about. You do not need a paragraph.
  • On the first date: the tone, not the contract. Talk about what you like in your life, what you expect from meeting someone and how you would like things to move forward. It is a conversation, not an interview. To plan that first date, see our first date guide.
  • Between the second and fourth date: the full conversation. Once there is some trust, it is the time to talk about what you want in more detail, including timing, children, work and pace.
  • When something changes: say so. If your wishes or availability change, saying it early is part of being clear.

Two additional recommendations. First, if you prefer a calm first meeting, Tinder reports that 35% prefer a walk or coffee for a first date, an idea that fits with slow dating: time to get to know each other without the pressure of a long dinner. Second, do not turn clarity into an exam: asking "do you want to get married?" in the first hour or demanding an immediate answer usually closes the conversation instead of opening it.

03Sample phrases: serious relationship, something casual, friendship or going slowly

These phrases are a starting point; swap them for your own words so they sound like you. Each one says what you want without pressure and ends with a question or room to answer. The Spanish is what you would send; the English is a translation:

  • Serious relationship: «Estoy buscando una relación estable y con proyección. Me gustaría conocerte con calma y ver si coincidimos. ¿Y tú qué estás buscando?» ("I am looking for a stable relationship with a future. I would like to get to know you calmly and see if we are a match. And what are you looking for?").
  • Something casual, no commitment: «Por ahora no busco algo formal; me gustaría conocer gente y pasar buenos ratos sin prisa. Si algo cambia, te lo digo. ¿Cómo lo ves tú?» ("For now I am not looking for something formal; I would like to meet people and have good times without rushing. If something changes, I will tell you. How do you see it?").
  • Friendship first: «Me caes muy bien y me encantaría conocerte mejor como amistad, sin presión de nada más. Si con el tiempo surge algo, lo hablamos» ("I like you a lot and I would love to get to know you better as a friend, with no pressure for anything more. If something comes up over time, we will talk about it").
  • Going slowly: «Prefiero ir con calma y sin etiquetas por ahora, ver cómo nos sentimos y hablar de lo que vaya surgiendo. ¿Te parece bien?» ("I prefer to go calmly and without labels for now, see how we feel and talk about whatever comes up. Does that sound good?").
  • To say what you will not accept: «Para mí es importante que seamos sinceros el uno con el otro y que nos avisemos si algo cambia. Es lo que me ayuda a sentirme tranquilo» ("It is important to me that we are sincere with each other and tell each other if something changes. It is what helps me feel at ease").

Some guidelines so they do not sound like an ultimatum: speak about yourself ("I am looking for…") and not about what the other person "should" want; avoid extreme words ("only", "never", "impossible"); do not use clarity to push for a quick answer; and back up words with actions, because saying you want something serious and then disappearing for days is not clarity.

The best phrases are short, positive and leave room for an answer.

04Cultural notes for Mexico: courtesy and indirect answers

In Mexico courtesy often carries a lot of weight in conversation, and that affects how a message is said and understood. These are general observations, not rules: they vary by person, region and generation.

  • The indirect answer is a form of kindness. Phrases such as "luego nos vemos" ("see you later"), "ya veremos" ("we will see") or "estoy un poco ocupada" ("I am a bit busy") can be a soft way of saying no. They do not always mean what they say literally; if you are unsure, ask warmly: «¿Prefieres que lo dejemos o te gustaría volver a vernos?» ("Would you rather we leave it or would you like to see each other again?").
  • A direct no does not have to sound harsh. It is appreciated when it comes with a thank you and a kind sentence: «Gracias por el tiempo, me caíste muy bien, pero no siento que busquemos lo mismo» ("Thank you for your time, I liked you a lot, but I do not feel that we are looking for the same thing").
  • Courtesy includes the people who serve you. According to Tinder, 54% think being rude to restaurant or café staff is the biggest turn-off. How you treat others is read as part of your character.
  • Family context matters. Mentioning children, parents or close friends naturally is part of saying who you are and what place commitment has in your life.
  • Formality. If you are not sure, start with respectful forms of address and let the other person set the level of familiarity.

A good rule: be clear in content and kind in form. Saying what you want with courtesy is more effective than saying it harshly or hiding it behind hints. And if you are talking with someone from another culture or language, preferring short sentences and checking what each person understood avoids misunderstandings.

05If you are over 45: what usually helps

After 45 it is common to have a full life: work, children, an ex-partner, a home, routines. That is not an obstacle, but it helps to say it early and clearly. Some ideas:

  • Talk about your pace. If you work a lot, travel or have family obligations, say so early and propose realistic plans instead of promising what you cannot sustain.
  • Mention your children and your history without drama. A calm sentence such as "I have two adult children and a good relationship with them" gives context without opening a long confession.
  • Say what you have learned. At this age you usually know what you need in a relationship; sharing it ("I value calm and communication") is more useful than a list of conditions.
  • Avoid comparisons with your past. Talking about what you want now, not about what failed before, keeps the conversation open.
  • Look after your safety. Clarity does not mean sharing your details: do not give your address, passwords or financial information to someone you have just met. See our guide to dating on apps and WhatsApp: how to protect yourself.

If you are starting again, our guide to dating after 40 gathers ideas for going step by step. And remember that being clear does not mean having everything figured out: you can say "I am still discovering what I want, but I know X and Y matter to me", and that is valuable information too.

06How to take a no (and how to give one)

Saying what you want means accepting that sometimes the answer will be that it does not match. A clear no is also a gift: it saves you weeks of doubt. Some ideas for handling it well:

  • Say thank you. "Thank you for telling me" is an answer that closes well and leaves a good memory.
  • Do not negotiate or insist. A no is not an invitation to convince; it is the answer. Insisting pressures and breaks trust, and respecting the other person's decisions is part of consent and respect on a date.
  • Give yourself a moment. Feeling disappointed is normal. Tinder reports that 45% want more empathy after a rejection; treating yourself with the same kindness you would show the other person counts too.
  • If you have to give the no: be brief, kind and clear: «Gracias por ser sincero. No siento que busquemos lo mismo, así que prefiero dejarlo aquí. Te deseo lo mejor» ("Thank you for being sincere. I do not feel we are looking for the same thing, so I prefer to leave it here. I wish you the best"). Avoid disappearing without an answer: silence leaves the other person without information.
  • Beware of "maybes" that are really noes. If you mean no, say it; if you say "maybe later" without meaning it, you prolong the other person's wait.

If something in the answer made you feel pressure, insistence or discomfort, that is a valid signal and you can close the conversation. Signs of control or pressure are explained in what a healthy relationship looks like.

07If you live on your own and prefer to start with clarity

If you want to meet someone with clear intentions from the start, you do not have to wait until the third date to find out whether you are looking for the same thing. Premium Dating Mexico is a private introduction service mediated by the administrator: it is free for women, nobody pays for a meeting, and identities are verified before they appear. You can understand how it works in the guide to mediated introductions versus dating apps or message us first on WhatsApp from the home page; it is not a promise of results, it is an orderly way to begin.

The figures and trends cited change, and Tinder's surveys were carried out in other countries and with young people: confirm the data at the original sources before sharing it. This guide is general information about dating and does not replace a professional's guidance.

Frequently asked questions

What is clear coding in dating?

It is the name Tinder gave, in its "Year in Swipe 2025" report, to openly saying what you are looking for (serious relationship, something casual or friendship) instead of ambiguity such as "let's see what happens". According to the report, 60% ask for clear communication about intentions and 64% think emotional honesty is what the dating world needs most; the survey covered people aged 18 to 25 in other countries.

Is it too soon to say what I am looking for on the first date?

Not if you do it with tact. A short sentence in the profile or the first messages and a conversation about the tone on the first date usually works; the fuller conversation is better left until there is some trust, between the second and fourth date. What to avoid is demanding immediate answers or asking questions like an exam.

How do I say I want something serious without sounding like pressure?

Speak about yourself and keep it positive: "I am looking for a stable relationship with a future; I would like to get to know you calmly and see if we are a match. And what are you looking for?". Avoid ultimatums, lists of conditions and words such as "only" or "never". Leave room for the other person to answer at their own pace.

How do I understand a "ya veremos" or a "luego nos vemos" in Mexico?

It can be a kind way of saying no, although it can also be a literal answer. It is not a rule: it depends on the person and the context. If you are unsure, ask warmly and directly, for example "would you like to see each other again or would you prefer to leave it?", and accept the answer.

What do I do if the other person wants something different?

Thank them for being sincere, do not negotiate or insist and decide calmly whether you want to stay in touch in another way, for example as a friend, or close it. A clear no saves you weeks of doubt. If you feel pressured or uncomfortable, you can close the conversation without giving more explanations.
