01What “sugar baby” means in Mexico City

In common use, a “sugar baby” is a young woman who receives financial support, gifts or experiences from an older man with means, the “sugar daddy”. There is no official definition and every arrangement is different. In Mexico City the terms are used in English, and that is how the SSC’s Cyber Police Unit uses them in its February 2025 alert, according to UnoTV.

  • Adults only. This guide is only about relationships between adults.
  • Free consent. Each person agrees without pressure and can leave at any time.
  • No official definition. What is not said out loud is understood differently by each side.

02Scams and alerts reported in Mexico City

These are the most recent alerts we found in public sources, with their dates. Always confirm the latest details with the authorities.

  • “Sugar daddy” or “sugar mommy” fraud (15 February 2025). The SSC’s Cyber Police warned about profiles with false identities and manipulated photos that, once contact is established, ask for money upfront under false pretexts (UnoTV and La Razón).
  • Fake profiles and emotional bonds (September 2025). The same unit warned about accounts that try to create an emotional tie to obtain money, personal data or intimate images, and recommended never sending money to people you only know online (UnoTV, 10 September 2025).
  • Single-view photo (10 September 2026). Messages from unknown numbers that, after the photo is opened, accuse or threaten in order to ask for money (UnoTV, 11 September 2026).
  • The game-and-drink scam. People posing as promoters offer a free drink in busy areas such as Del Valle, Roma and Nápoles and then invite you to a game with prizes: they ask for about 300 pesos at first and keep asking for more (ADN 40, published 18 July 2025 and updated 1 July 2026).

The patterns repeat: money upfront, rush, identities that cannot be checked and pressure to leave a public place. There is more on this in nightlife scams and risks in Mexico City.

03Drinks and safety when going out

In June 2026, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico said that tampering with drinks is a known risk in parts of the country, especially in bars, crowded events and celebrations, and that tourists are often targeted, according to El Financiero (17 June 2026). Its recommendations are three.

  • Do not leave your drink unattended.
  • Avoid accepting drinks from strangers.
  • Move around in a group, especially at night and in central areas.

According to ADN 40, if you feel dizzy or disoriented after accepting a drink, seek medical attention immediately and report to 911 or, anonymously, to 089.

04Where to meet: public places, in daylight, with an easy exit

Mexico City’s Cyber Police recommend avoiding private or unfamiliar places on a first date. In practice, that means a public place with people around, in daylight, that you can get to and leave on your own. These are some documented options; confirm hours and rules before you go.

  • Polanco. The Soumaya and Jumex museums, facing each other, have free admission according to InformaBTL (September 2025) and Chilango (May 2025); the Soumaya is open every day from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., according to InformaBTL.
  • Roma and Condesa. Time Out México (7 February 2025) recommends for a first date the cafés Brewers and Apiñonado, in Roma, and Malcriado, in Condesa. The Condesa DF hotel, at Av. Veracruz 102, has a triangular rooftop terrace with a small bar, according to the Michelin Guide.
  • Coyoacán. The Centenario and Hidalgo gardens, facing each other, according to Chilango (October 2022; confirm they are still the same).
  • Centro. Curva Café, with the roasting in view, according to Time Out México (February 2025).
  • A luxury hotel as a meeting point. The St. Regis Mexico City, at Paseo de la Reforma 439, lists the King Cole Bar, with a terrace, and a “Ritual Afternoon Tea” that is booked in advance. Its website does not say whether those spaces are open to non-guests, so ask first.

Basic rules for a first date with someone you met online:

  • Arrive on your own and tell someone you trust where you will be.
  • Keep it short and in daylight. A coffee or a museum visit; if there is chemistry, there will be a second one.
  • Do not share your address or travel plans in the first conversation.
  • You can leave whenever you want, and so can the other person.

Trust is built in person, in daylight and without rushing.

05Privacy: what not to share

Mexico City’s SSC recommends limiting the information visible on social media, using strong passwords, not sharing addresses, phone numbers or financial data, thinking before sending photos, videos or messages because they can be used against you, and not accepting requests from strangers (TV Azteca, 6 March 2025). Profeco adds not sharing personal or financial information and not agreeing to move to another messaging app (ADN 40, February 2025).

If someone threatens to publish photos or messages, the Cyber Police recommendations of September 2026 are:

  • Do not pay or continue the conversation.
  • Keep screenshots, numbers and messages.
  • Block and report inside the app.
  • File a report. The SSC’s Cyber Police take calls at 55 5242 5100, ext. 5086 (confirm the number before calling), and 089 takes anonymous reports.
