Scams and risks in Monterrey nightlife: how to protect yourself
Going out at night in Monterrey can be a great experience, but it pays to know the most common risks: bills that do not add up, drinks that someone tampers with, someone offering you an entry that does not exist, and rides that end badly. This guide does not point to places to avoid or steer anyone toward any area; it gathers recommendations from official sources and the press so you go out better informed. It is general information for adults and does not replace professional advice.
In short
- Always ask for the receipt and check the bill: according to Profeco, prices must be visible and tipping is voluntary.
- The US Embassy issued a 2026 alert about adulterated drinks in bars and tourist areas of Mexico; watch your drink and do not accept drinks from strangers.
- Be wary of anyone offering entries, tables or “lists” for an advance payment; confirm through the venue’s own channels.
- Head home by ride-hailing app after midnight and share your trip with someone you trust.
01What we are talking about
We are talking about the risks of a night out at bars and clubs, not about any particular area. A risk does not make a place bad; what usually changes is the context: crowds, noise, alcohol and hurry. If you want to understand the areas with a reputation for sex work, read our guide to red-light areas in Monterrey.

The best protection is going out with a plan.
02Inflated bills and charges you did not expect
According to Profeco, there are practices a bar or restaurant cannot impose. Knowing them helps you check the bill calmly.
- Visible prices. They must be on display, in national currency.
- Voluntary tip. They cannot impose a percentage or include it automatically in the bill.
- No minimum spend. They cannot make entry conditional on a minimum spend, according to Profeco’s notice.
- Receipt. Every purchase must be backed by a ticket or invoice; keep it.
- Card. They cannot charge a fee for paying by card.
Check the bill before paying, ask what any charge you do not recognize is, and keep the receipt. If you think you were charged improperly, you can file a complaint with Profeco through its official channels.
03Adulterated or tampered drinks
In 2026, the US Embassy issued an alert ahead of the World Cup about adulterated drinks in bars, events and tourist areas of Mexico. Although it is aimed at travelers, the recommendations apply to anyone.
- Watch your drink and never leave it unattended.
- Do not accept drinks from strangers; order them directly from staff.
- Be wary of drinks served without visible preparation or open bottles kept out of your sight.
- Go with someone and agree with them how you will get home.
- Warning signs: dizziness, confusion, weakness, or a change in the drink’s taste, smell or color.
If you suspect something happened to your drink or someone else’s, get medical attention right away, tell staff and your companions, and do not stay alone. Note where it happened.
04Fake promoters, “lists” and dates that are not what they seem
These are common-sense tips, not statistics: we found no official data on this type of fraud in Monterrey.
- Advance payments. If someone on the street or by message offers you an entry, a table or a spot on a list for a deposit, check with the venue itself before paying.
- Fake profiles. If someone invites you to a place you do not know and asks for money to get in, be wary. Read our guide to dating red flags and scams.
- Photos and videos. Nobody should take intimate photos of you without your consent; if someone threatens to spread them, keep the messages and seek help.
- Get to know the person first. A video call and a first meeting in a public place reduce risk.
If someone rushes you to pay or decide, that hurry is already a signal: do not let yourself be pressured.
05Getting there and getting back
A Monterrey safety guide says street taxis may overcharge or skip the meter, and recommends ride-hailing apps after dark, especially around Barrio Antiguo.
- Pick your ride home before you go out and do not wait until you are tired.
- Check the plates, driver and car model before you get in.
- Share your trip with someone you trust.
- Stay on streets with activity and avoid walking alone on the edges of bar districts in the small hours.
- Watch your belongings in crowded places; show your phone and wallet as little as possible.
If you are going out with someone you met that night, agree in advance how each of you gets home.
06An alternative where nobody pays for a date
Many nighttime scams rest on paying for something: an entry, company, a date. In a service built on consent and verification, that risk is removed from the start.
Premium Dating Mexico is a private introduction service mediated by the administrator: it is free for women, nobody pays for a meeting, identities are verified and photos are protected. Learn more on the Monterrey page and in our guide to dating in San Pedro.
Venues change, so confirm hours, reservations and policies with each venue before you go. We have no relationship with any of the places mentioned, and the listings are not paid. The information comes from Profeco notices, from the US Embassy alert as reported by the press in 2026 and from Monterrey safety guides.
