First date in Puerto Vallarta: a step-by-step plan between the Malecón and the Zona Romántica

In Puerto Vallarta the scenery does part of the work, and that is exactly why a script helps: it is easy to be carried away by the sunset and end up in a plan that is longer, farther or pricier than you wanted. Here are three plans ordered from least to most commitment, all with places already mentioned in our city guides, with timings, sample messages and a plan B.

In short

  • For a first date, stay in the Zona Romántica and the Centro: everything is walkable and you can change venue without long trips.
  • A thirty-to-forty-minute sunset on the Malecón is a lovely plan that is easy to leave; boats and excursions are for a second date.
  • If one of you is passing through, say so early: how many days are left and what each of you is looking for.
  • Each with your own transport, a fare agreed before getting into a taxi, and a taxi or ride-hailing back to the neighbourhoods in the hills.

01Before you propose: calendar, area and transport

Our page on dating in Puerto Vallarta describes the bay and its areas. For a first date, the simplest decision is this: Zona Romántica and the Centro. It is walkable, with cafés, galleries and bars, and Los Muertos beach is within the Centro.

  • Ask about the calendar. There are residents, foreigners who stayed and visitors. Saying early how many days you have and what you are looking for avoids different expectations.
  • Choose on foot. Transport is part of safety: a walkable area lets you leave whenever you want.
  • Apps and taxis. Uber, DiDi and InDrive operate; street taxis have no meter, so agree the fare before getting in (Vallarta Adventures, 17 July 2026, a tour operator’s blog).
  • Your transport, not your date’s. For the first date, arrive and leave by your own means.
  • Season. November to April is high season: more people and fewer free tables. Book if you are going to have dinner.

In a beach destination, the first useful question is how many days each person has.

02Plan 1 · One hour: breakfast or coffee in the Zona Romántica

This is the calmest plan: daylight, little pressure and a natural ending. It works equally well for residents and for visitors.

  • Minute 0 · The meeting. Meet on a corner or at the entrance to a café in the Zona Romántica; streets such as Basilio Badillo and Olas Altas appear in the guides as an area of cafés and breakfast spots. Describe the exact point by message.
  • Minutes 5 to 40 · Breakfast or coffee. A table with a view of the street and little noise. Order something simple. This is the moment to talk about the calendar: “I am here until Thursday, and you?”.
  • Minutes 40 to 55 · A walk. Head toward Los Muertos beach and the pier: a local guide describes it as a pier lit up at night, with restaurants around the beach.
  • Minutes 55 to 60 · The decision. If you want to see her again, suggest it with a concrete plan for another time of day; if not, say thank you clearly.

This plan is a favourite for people who are here for a few days: it does not take up the evening and leaves room for other plans.

03Plan 2 · Sunset on the Malecón

A second option for a first date if there is trust in the messages, or the nicest way to carry on after the coffee. Allow about two hours.

  • Minutes 0 to 15 · Arrive with light. A Vallarta Adventures guide suggests reaching the Los Arcos amphitheatre about 30 to 45 minutes before sunset. Check the state of the promenade and the day’s events before meeting there.
  • Minutes 15 to 50 · Walking and talking. A short stroll, thirty or forty minutes, with a pause for a drink. Walking side by side makes conversation easier.
  • Minutes 50 to 80 · The sunset. Stop talking for a moment and watch. A shared silence says a lot.
  • Close. If you carry on, the Los Muertos pier is lit up at night and is a walk from the Malecón. If not, each goes to their own transport.

The sunset makes any conversation seem better. Take a moment, once the light has gone, to decide whether you felt the same about the person as about the scenery.

04Plan 3 · Dinner, only if the conversation flowed

The guides mention restaurants in the Zona Romántica and the Centro for dinners with atmosphere. The names come from a Vallarta Adventures list (published 20 May 2024; page modified 25 October 2025): confirm that they are still open and their opening hours.

  • For conversation with a view. La Cappella, with a patio toward the cathedral and the bay, and Le Kliff, with a sunset terrace, are among those named. They are formal places: ask about the dress code.
  • Garden or patio. Café des Artistes and The Iguana (La Iguana), in the historic centre, according to the same list; the latter has live music, so ask for a quiet table.
  • By the sea. Mar y Vino, facing the Malecón.
  • A rooftop. Some restaurants in the Zona Romántica, such as the one on the roof of a boutique hotel with a view of the bay, appear in the guides; confirm whether they receive non-guests.
  • Book and arrive on foot or by taxi. There is no need to order too much or make it last all night.

For a first date, do not choose a plan that requires a boat: the dinner at Alma, in Las Caletas, is part of an excursion and is hard to cut short. Save it for later.

05What to write and what to talk about

Short, clear messages with a place and a time. Adapt them in your own words.

  • Proposing. “Would you like breakfast in the Zona Romántica on Friday at ten? Afterwards we can take a walk along Los Muertos beach if we feel like it.”
  • If she lives here. “What is your favourite place in Vallarta that does not appear in the guides?”
  • If one of you is passing through. “I am here until Sunday and I would love to meet you without rushing. Would you like a coffee?”
  • Confirming. “See you at ten on the corner we agreed on. I am wearing a white shirt. If anything changes, let me know.”
  • Closing well. “I loved talking with you. Would you like to watch the sunset on the Malecón tomorrow?” Or, clearly: “It was a pleasure, but I would rather leave it here. I wish you a good trip.”

For conversation: ask how long she has lived here, what she likes about the city beyond the beach, what she does when there are no tourists. If she lives here, let her be the one to show you her Vallarta. Avoid comments about money or status and do not decide because of the setting: give it a few days before committing to anything.

If you talk about carrying on from a distance, name how, how often and with what limits; there are ideas in how to make a relationship last.

06Plan B, safety and Carolina

If it rains, it is too noisy or the evening gets complicated, switch to a covered café nearby or reschedule. Excursions, such as the water taxi to the south of the bay or whale watching from December to March, are for a second date, when there is trust and you can plan them without rushing.

  • Be wary of money up front: a deposit to “reserve” the date, a taxi paid for before you meet or a payment link are signs of a scam.
  • Promoters. An invitation to a “presentation”, “membership” or “exclusive event” on the first day is a sales pitch, not a date; a firm “no, thank you” is enough.
  • Your drink, in view, in bars and on beaches.
  • A person you trust knows where you are; share your location.
  • At night, the neighbourhoods in the hills have less light: go back by taxi or ride-hailing, not on foot. For emergencies dial 911 or, for bilingual tourist assistance, 078.

According to the advisory we cite on our city page, the US State Department classifies Jalisco at level 3 (6 September 2024) and lists Puerto Vallarta among the tourist areas with no other restrictions for its staff. Check travel.state.gov before you travel. Official advisories, opening hours and phone numbers change: confirm them with official sources before using them. We have no relationship with any of the places, platforms or institutions mentioned, and the listings are not paid.

Frequently asked questions

Which plan suits me if I only have one day in Vallarta?

Breakfast or coffee in the Zona Romántica in the morning and, if there is chemistry, the sunset on the Malecón. Two short moments are better than a long excursion with someone you barely know.

Should I say early that I am passing through?

Yes, naturally and from the first messages. It stops anyone assuming something that will not happen and lets each person decide whether they are interested.

How do I get back safely at night?

Order the taxi or ride-hailing yourself, agree the fare before getting in if it is a street taxi, and avoid walking through poorly lit neighbourhoods in the hills. Share your location with someone you trust.

Can I suggest a boat excursion for the first date?

It is better to leave it for later. An excursion of several hours is hard to cut short if the chemistry does not appear; a coffee or a walk in the Zona Romántica is simpler.

Can Carolina tell me where to have dinner?

She can help you think about what kind of place suits you and how to ask. Always confirm opening hours and reservations with the venue; we have no relationship with any of them.
