First date in Guanajuato: a step-by-step plan for walking, talking and saying goodbye well
You already know that Guanajuato is explored on foot and that a plaza or a theatre helps conversation. Here we go a step further: a script to organise the date minute by minute, from the message you propose it with to the goodbye. There are three plans, from least to most commitment, so you can choose the one that suits the person and the day, and stop at any point without it being awkward.
In short
- Start with the shortest plan: an hour, a clear meeting point, a walk and a coffee; you can stretch it if there is chemistry.
- In Guanajuato it is best to leave the car and get around on foot or by taxi: the city sits in a canyon and parking is scarce.
- Suggest dinner during the date, not before: that way nobody is stuck in a long plan with someone they barely know.
- Tell someone you trust, have your own transport back and check the current travel advisory before you travel.
01Before you propose: pace, arrival and return
Our page on dating in Guanajuato explains what the city is like. This is the practical part. The capital is compact, vertical and built in a canyon: you can walk from the Jardín de la Unión to the Basilica and the Teatro Juárez, and guides point out that parking in the centre is scarce. That cuts down the decisions: you do not need a grand plan, only an orderly one.
- Where to meet. Choose a single, easy-to-describe point, such as the entrance to the Jardín de la Unión or the façade of the Teatro Juárez, and confirm it by message. On streets that look alike, “see you at the plaza” is not enough.
- How to get there. On foot from your hotel or by taxi or ride-hailing; leave the car. Avoid any plan that makes you drive after drinking.
- How to get back. The slopes and stairs at night tire you more than you would think. Plan the return before you go out and order the taxi yourself.
- When. A daytime or early-evening date is easier to read. On festival dates, such as the Cervantino in October or the Day of the Dead festival in late October and early November, there are more people: arrive early and book where needed.
A good first date can be interrupted at any minute without anyone looking bad.
02Plan 1 · One hour: a short walk and a coffee
This is the lightest plan and the one we recommend starting with. It lasts an hour, but if all goes well it can turn into three.
- Minute 0 · The meeting. Arrive ten minutes early. If the point is the Jardín de la Unión, write when you are there and describe where: “I am next to the entrance we agreed on, wearing a blue jacket”.
- Minutes 5 to 25 · Walking. A short stroll from the garden to the Basilica and the Teatro Juárez. Walking side by side takes the pressure off silences, and the architecture gives you something to talk about without effort.
- Minutes 25 to 55 · The coffee. Pick a table in view of other people, with little noise. Order something light: whoever drinks little decides better.
- Minutes 55 to 60 · The decision. Before getting up, one of you can say how it felt. If you enjoyed it, suggest something concrete and short; if not, a sincere thank-you is enough.
The value of this plan is that it ends well even without chemistry: you both leave with a pleasant hour and no emotional debts.
03Plan 2 · An afternoon: alleys, a view and a drink
For when the conversation is already good, or for a second date, this plan extends the walk with a pause with a view. Allow two to three hours.
- Part one · Alleys. Walk through the centre, including the area near the Callejón del Beso, which the Michelin Guide mentions alongside the Jardín de la Unión and the Teatro Juárez as three typical stops on a tour. It is a heavily visited place: treat it as a stroll, not as a stage for grand gestures.
- Part two · Calle Positos. Between the university and the Alhóndiga, the atmosphere is more everyday and less touristy. A good place to ask how the other person experiences the city.
- Part three · A drink with a view. Some boutique hotels in the centre, such as Nueve 25 or Hotel Boutique 1850 (with a view of the Teatro Juárez), have a terrace or rooftop bar according to the guides. Confirm by phone or on their website whether they receive people who are not staying there and what time they open.
- Just one drink. Order one, talk and decide. The view makes everything seem better; it is worth checking whether the conversation is too.
A practical note: if you are going to climb and descend stairs, choose comfortable shoes and mention it in the message. It is a kind way of looking after the other person.
04Plan 3 · Dinner, only if the conversation flowed
Dinner is the plan with the most commitment, which is why it is best to propose it during the date and not before. “Shall we carry on with a simple dinner?” lets the other person say no without having to explain.
- Where. Near calle Alonso, according to Hotel Scoop, there are restaurants and bars a short distance from the centre. We do not name a specific restaurant because we have not verified any for this page: ask at your hotel and confirm opening hours and a table.
- When to book. Fridays, Saturdays and festival dates fill up: book or keep a second option handy.
- How long. An hour and a half is enough to get to know someone. There is no need to fill the night.
- Alcohol. Little. More than you planned is the most common cause of decisions that are later regretted.
- Getting back. Each with your own transport. If you walk together to one person’s hotel, let it be because you both want to and not out of inertia.
If your hotel is far from that stretch, plan the taxi back before asking for the bill, not after.
05What to write and what to talk about
Short, clear messages work better than clever ones. Here are examples you can adapt in your own words.
- Proposing. “Would you like a coffee and a short walk around the centre of Guanajuato on Saturday at five? That way we see a bit of the city and see how it goes.”
- Confirming on the day. “See you at five at the entrance to the Jardín de la Unión. I am wearing a blue jacket. If anything changes, let me know.”
- If you are late. “I am ten minutes behind because of the slopes, almost there. Sorry.”
- Saying goodbye when you want to see them again. “I really enjoyed meeting you. Would you like to do this again this week?”
- Saying goodbye when you do not. “Thank you for the afternoon, it was nice to chat, but I do not feel a connection. I wish you all the best.” Clear, brief and kind.
The city helps conversation: “What is your favourite corner of Guanajuato?”, “Do you prefer the city by day or by night?”, “Do the stairs tire you or do you like them?”, “Have you been to the Cervantino?”. Listen to the answer and ask a second question before telling your own story.
To read the moment: a comfortable person asks questions, smiles and suggests carrying on; an uncomfortable one looks at the phone, shortens answers or looks toward the exit. Either signal deserves respect. Avoid comments about money or status and do not speak ill of your exes. And when she says she is leaving, she is leaving.
06Plan B, safety and Carolina
If it rains, there are too many people or the atmosphere is off, change place or shorten the plan without drama: “It is very noisy here; shall we find somewhere quieter nearby?”. If that does not work, rescheduling is better than forcing it.
- A public place in full view, at every stage.
- A person you trust knows where you are, who you are with and what time you plan to be back; share your location for as long as the date lasts.
- Your own transport, not that of someone you have just met.
- Your drink, always in view, and nothing you did not see served.
- No deposits and no data. Nobody legitimate asks for money up front to see you; do not send ID or bank details to someone you have just met online. More signs in red flags on a date.

Frequently asked questions
How long should a first date in Guanajuato last?
An hour is a good starting point: a short walk and a coffee. If there is chemistry, it can stretch to an afternoon. What matters is that either of you can end it without giving explanations.
What if the other person wants to continue somewhere private?
You can say you prefer to carry on somewhere public or leave it for another day. A respectful person accepts that without insisting; if they insist, it is a sign to end the date.
Is it a good idea to meet during a festival?
It is possible, but there are more people and fewer free tables. Arrive early, book if needed and have a plan B. If it is Day of the Dead, remember that cemeteries and offerings are spaces of family memory, not settings for a date.
Should I pay the bill?
The important thing is to agree on it naturally. Many people split the first bill or take turns; if you prefer to treat, do it without expecting anything in return.
Can Carolina organise the date for me?
No. Carolina is a virtual assistant (AI): she helps with ideas, messages and plans, but she does not arrange dates or give out contact details.
