AI romance scams: fake profiles, cloned voices and deepfake video calls
For years the advice for avoiding a romance scam was simple: ask for a video call. Today that is no longer enough. According to a study reported by Infobae and the EFE agency on 13 February 2026, artificial intelligence makes deception harder to detect, because it can create synthetic identities, clone voices and simulate video calls. This guide is not meant to scare you or put you off meeting someone: it explains how these frauds work, which patterns the Mexico City authorities' alerts keep repeating and which practical steps help you verify a person before giving them trust, money or data.
In short
- AI can create fake photos, voices and even video calls: a video call or a voice note is no longer, by itself, proof that someone is who they say they are.
- The Mexico City Cyber Police alerts agree on the essentials: an emotional bond that forms very fast, excuses for not meeting and, sooner or later, a request for money or data.
- Verify through several routes (reverse photo search, a meeting in a public place, details that can be checked) and never send money, documents or intimate photos to someone you have not met in person.
- If you already sent something, it is not your fault: keep the evidence, tell your bank and report the profile and the case. The sooner, the better.
01What artificial intelligence changed
The romance scam is not new: an attractive profile, affectionate messages, a relationship that moves fast and, in the end, a request for money. What artificial intelligence changes is the quality of the disguise. According to the study "El amor en los Tiempos de las Telecom 2026" by The Competitive Intelligence Unit, reported by Infobae and EFE on 13 February 2026, around 8.6 million people in Mexico were looking for a partner on dating apps at that moment, so the field is wide for scammers.
In the same report, Elisa Elías of the consultancy Aegis Security describes AI as a turning point: it makes it possible to create synthetic identities, clone voices and simulate video calls, what she calls "AI-powered social engineering". In other words, the deception still relies on emotion (loneliness, hope, hurry), but the proofs that used to reassure, such as a photo, an audio clip or a face on screen, can now be fabricated.
The conclusion of the experts quoted is not panic but digital education: understand how these frauds work, take the time you need and verify. Meeting someone online is still normal and, in most cases, goes well; it just calls for a little more method.
Seeing a face on a screen or hearing a voice no longer proves that a real person is behind it.
02The patterns that alerts in Mexico keep repeating
Beyond the technology, romance frauds follow a recognizable script. These are the recent alerts we were able to verify, with their dates.
- Fake soldiers (October 2026). The Mexico City Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC), through its Cyber Police, warned about profiles posing as soldiers on social networks and dating apps, according to Publimetro (6 October 2026). The pattern: a profile with photos, ranks and uniforms, a very fast emotional bond, the excuse of being on a mission or in a conflict zone that prevents meeting and, afterwards, requests for money for tickets, permits, medical costs, customs or paperwork, often through gift cards, cryptocurrency or transfers.
- "Virtual girlfriends" (September 2025). Xataka México (9 September 2025) reported another alert from the same force: profiles with attractive photos that build trust through everyday conversations and then ask for money, personal data or intimate photos, or try to get the victim to open malicious files. It can escalate into extortion, sextortion or identity theft.
- The "life-changing" investment. Someone you have just met recommends an investment or cryptocurrency platform. Panda Security (18 November 2024) notes that some scammers use real-time video calls to win trust and then steer the victim to fake platforms from which money cannot be withdrawn. Outside Mexico, the FBI's 2025 Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) report, cited by AARP on 16 April 2026, records 929 million dollars in reported romance-scam losses in the United States and 11.3 billion dollars in cryptocurrency-related fraud; these are figures from another country and cannot be transferred to Mexico, but they show the scale of the problem.
What they all have in common: the relationship moves faster than the evidence that the person exists. To see how this fits with other frauds in circulation, read our guides on advance-deposit scams, fake ads and sextortion.
03How AI is used in these frauds
It helps to know the three main tools so they do not catch you by surprise. You do not need to understand technology: it is enough to know what they can fake.
- Synthetic profiles. Photos generated by AI or taken from real people, polished biographies and conversations that never get tired. A profile that is "too perfect" or very new is one of the warning signs the Cyber Police list in the Xataka report.
- Cloned voices. With a few seconds of audio, a program can imitate a tone and a way of speaking. Panda Security notes that manipulated audio can sound flat or lack background noise, or have it out of place, although these clues are not foolproof and fade as the technology improves.
- Simulated video calls. Some programs overlay a fake face in real time. Panda Security mentions unnatural postures, a glossy or unreal look and facial skin that does not match the rest of the body. The Infobae and EFE report warns that visual and audio verification, such as video calls, should no longer be treated as proof on its own.
Infobae and EFE also told the case of a teenager who for months believed she was chatting and video calling the actor Keanu Reeves and even planned a meeting, until her family stepped in; the deception could have ended in a kidnapping or another crime. It is an extreme case, but it shows something important: emotion beats logic, which is why verification rules should be mechanical and not depend on "feeling" whether someone is real.
04Warning signs worth taking seriously
No single sign proves that someone is deceiving you, but several together justify slowing down. The Mexico City Cyber Police alerts published in October 2026 (Publimetro and Quinto Poder) agree on the first three.
- A relationship that moves too fast. Intense declarations of affection or plans for the future in the first days. The SSC itself names this as the main sign.
- Excuses for not meeting or appearing live. The person repeatedly avoids video calls or meetings, or only accepts short calls, always with a new reason: a mission, a trip, a contract abroad.
- A request for money or data. Transfers, loans, customs or health costs, gift cards, cryptocurrency or banking information, even with a promise to pay it back.
- Stories that change. Details that do not match from one day to the next, or answers that dodge every concrete question.
- "Convenient" proofs of identity. Photos in uniform or a supposed ID sent without you asking; the SSC asks that these not be taken as proof of identity.
- Moving to another platform or installing something. Files, links or apps from someone you barely know.
If you see one or two, you do not have to cut contact abruptly, but you should pause any decision involving money, documents or intimacy. For more general signs, read our warning signs when meeting someone.
05How to verify someone step by step
These checks are designed to be done calmly and without offending anyone. A real person acting in good faith almost always understands them.
- 1. Reverse photo search. The SSC recommends running reverse searches on the profile photos to see whether they appear under other names. If the same photos show up on other profiles or on news sites, that is a clear sign.
- 2. A video call, but not as the only proof. Ask for it without announcing it days in advance and, during the call, ask for spontaneous things: show the place where they are, turn their head to the side, pass a hand in front of the face or show an everyday object. This is common sense, not a guarantee: the tools keep improving, and an ordinary video call does not prove good intentions either.
- 3. Details that can be checked. Ask about verifiable things and not only feelings: the neighborhood where they work, a local reference, a mutual contact. If everything they tell you is impossible to check, treat that as a data point.
- 4. A meeting in a public place. This is the strongest check: a short first date, in daylight, in a busy place, with your own transport and telling someone you trust. Our first-date guide and the one on safety and trust explain how.
- 5. A second opinion. Tell a friend or a relative. According to Xataka, the Cyber Police recommend consulting people close to you if doubts arise: from the outside, the script looks clearer.
And one rule that does not change: do not send money, identity documents, banking details, passwords or verification codes to someone you have not met in person, even if the story is convincing, even if there is an emergency and even if you have been talking for months. Do not share intimate photos either: they can be used to extort you.
Verifying is not distrusting the person: it is protecting both of you by making sure what is said is true.
06If you already sent money, data or photos
If you realize you might be in the middle of a fraud, the first step is to stop sending money or data; you can stop replying without explaining. The second, and this matters, is not to feel ashamed: these frauds are designed by professionals to work on intelligent, careful people, and it can happen to anyone.
- Keep the evidence. Screenshots of conversations, profiles, usernames, photos, phone numbers, emails, links and transfer receipts; the SSC asks that all of that be saved.
- Tell your bank as soon as possible if you made a transfer or shared financial data, and review protections for your accounts, such as changing passwords and turning on two-step verification.
- Report the profile on the platform where the contact took place.
- Ask the authorities for guidance. The SSC Cyber Police in Mexico City published as channels the phone number 55 5242 5100, extension 5086, the email [email protected] and the @SSC_CDMX account on X, according to Quinto Poder (31 October 2026). Confirm these details on the official site before contacting them, because they may change, and if you live in another state, ask the local authority.
- If there are intimate photos or threats, do not pay and do not continue the conversation; see our guide on sextortion.
If you need emotional support as well as practical help, talking to a trusted person or a mental health professional helps; the emotional blow of a romance fraud is real and should not be carried alone.
07If you live alone and want to meet someone with more peace of mind
A good filter against these frauds is having a person on the other side who reviews whoever comes in. Premium Dating Mexico is a private introduction service mediated by the administrator: women send us an official ID and their own photos and we review them before publishing a profile, and men verify their identity once before their first contact. No system is perfect or replaces your own judgment, and nobody should send money to a person they do not know, not even through a service. Learn more on the home page, in our guide on how identity is verified and in the one on the safety of a matchmaking service.
Data, alerts and contact channels change: confirm everything with official sources before acting. This guide is general safety information and is not legal advice or advice on any particular situation.
Frequently asked questions
Does a video call prove the person is real?
Not by itself anymore. According to the study reported by Infobae and EFE on 13 February 2026, AI can simulate video calls, and visual or audio verification should not be treated as the only proof. Combine it with reverse photo search, checkable details and, above all, a meeting in a public place.
How can I tell whether a voice was cloned?
With certainty, it is hard. Panda Security (18 November 2024) mentions flat audio or background noise that is missing or out of place, but these clues lose strength over time. A more reliable rule: if there is an urgency involving money, hang up and call a number you already know yourself, or check with another person.
What should I do if someone I just met recommends I invest?
Close the topic. Someone you have just met online should not be giving you investment advice or sending you to a cryptocurrency platform. Panda Security describes how some frauds use video calls to win trust and steer the victim to fake platforms from which money cannot be withdrawn.
Is it safe to meet people on dating apps?
Millions of people do it without trouble, but it pays to follow a safety routine: do not send money or documents, check photos, meet in public places and tell someone you trust. Read our guide on dating through apps and WhatsApp.
Who do I report a romance fraud to in Mexico City?
The SSC Cyber Police in Mexico City published the phone number 55 5242 5100, extension 5086, and the email [email protected], according to Quinto Poder (31 October 2026). Confirm the details on the official site before contacting them, and tell your bank too if you made a transfer.
