Sugar dating in Mexico for foreigners: expectations, safety and a discreet alternative

If you are visiting Mexico or living here as a foreigner, you have probably heard of sugar dating. This guide explains what it means in practice, which expectations are worth settling from the start and which risks authorities and the press have documented, above all fraud, extortion and consular alerts about dating apps. It is information for adults about relationships between adults, not an invitation to pay for anything, and it does not replace the advice of a lawyer.

In short

  • Sugar dating is an informal arrangement in which a person with more resources offers support or gifts to another; there is no official definition and no written rules, so everything depends on what both people agree.
  • Everyone involved must be over 18 and take part freely. If you have any doubt about someone’s age or free will, the right move is to walk away.
  • The US Consulate in Guadalajara warned in June 2025 about tourists kidnapped after meeting people on dating apps: meeting in public places and telling someone your plan reduces the risk.
  • Anyone who asks for money up front, sends checks for too much or asks for gift cards is running a scam. If you would rather meet someone without exchanges, introduction services with verified identity exist.

01What sugar dating is and what it is not

In common use, sugar dating describes a relationship in which a person with more resources offers support, gifts or experiences to another, usually younger, person, and both expect company and shared time. There is no official definition: every arrangement is different and written rules are rare. We explain it in more detail in our guide to sugar babies in Mexico.

  • What it is. An informal agreement between adults, with expectations that are discussed and can change.
  • What it is not. An obligation, a contract or a claim on the other person: anyone can say no or leave whenever they want.
  • What it must not be. An exchange organized by a third party who profits from it: criminal laws apply there, explained below.

The word that comes up most among people who have had bad experiences is the same one: ambiguity. When each side understands something different, discomfort, misunderstanding and, in the worst case, fraud follow.

02Expectations, language and good manners

What follows is editorial judgment, not the result of a study: these are practices that help both sides know where they stand.

  • Be clear about who you are. How long you will be in the country, whether you have a partner and what you are looking for. Hiding it at the start is a frequent source of conflict.
  • Talk about expectations in person and without rushing, after meeting in a public place and not through messages with someone you have not yet seen.
  • Learn the basics of the language. A few phrases in Spanish and a willingness to use a translator show respect and avoid misunderstandings.
  • “No” is final. Do not insist, do not negotiate and do not take silence as a yes.
  • Gifts are not a debt. Whoever receives them owes you nothing, and whoever gives them must not use them as pressure.

03Adults only and free consent

Everyone involved must be over 18. The chapters of the Federal Criminal Code on pornography, sex tourism, lenocinio (pimping) and human trafficking have specific versions for people under 18, according to the index of Title Eight published by Justia México. The code’s latest reform is dated 13 March 2026, according to the Chamber of Deputies.

  • If you have any doubt about age, walk away. Do not continue the conversation or meet the person.
  • Consent must be free. The General Law on human trafficking (latest reform 14 November 2025) states in its Article 40 that the victim’s consent does not exclude the criminal liability of whoever commits these offenses, whatever the victim’s age.
  • Signs that something is wrong. Someone who appears to be watched, who does not hold their own documents or phone, who depends on another person to decide or who owes money to a third party.
  • If you see those signs, do not confront anyone. Leave and report: the National Anti-Trafficking Line (800 5533 000), which the Consejo Ciudadano describes as a 24-hour line with anonymous handling if the caller asks; the anonymous report line 089; or 911 in an emergency. Confirm the numbers before calling.

If you are a US citizen or permanent resident, the Department of Justice explains, on a page updated on 11 August 2023, that federal laws against the sexual exploitation of minors apply to US citizens when they travel abroad too, and that anyone under 18 is considered a minor.

04Documented risks for visitors

Authorities have published specific alerts. They are worth reading before you travel.

  • Dating apps and kidnappings. On 2 June 2025, the US Consulate General in Guadalajara warned that some US tourists had been kidnapped by people they met on dating apps, and that victims and their families were later extorted. The notice mentioned beach areas of Puerto Vallarta and Nayarit and said the risk is not limited to a single area, according to El Financiero (3 June 2025).
  • What that notice recommends. Meet only in public places, avoid residences and hotel rooms, tell a friend or relative the plan, the person’s details and the app used, trust your instincts and, in an emergency, call 911.
  • Adulterated drinks. The US Embassy published an alert in June 2026 about adulterated drinks aimed at travelers during the World Cup, according to UnoTV (5 July 2026). As a general practice, do not leave your drink unattended and do not accept drinks from strangers.
  • Alerts by state. The US State Department rates each Mexican state by risk level. When the June 2025 notice was published, Jalisco was at Level 3 and Nayarit at Level 2, according to El Financiero. Check the current advisory at travel.state.gov before you travel, because it changes.

None of this means you should not travel or meet people; it means it is worth doing with a method.

05Scams, extortion and privacy

Fraud is the most frequent risk and the easiest to avoid.

  • Checks or overpayments. The BBB explains that scammers offer an “allowance,” send more money than needed and ask for a “favor”: buying gift cards, forwarding items or paying a bill. If the payment is a check, it can be fake and the bank can claw the money back (WHSV, 7 February 2025).
  • Never send money to someone you have not met in person. It is the central rule of the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the BBB.
  • Sextortion. Someone who obtains intimate photos or videos threatens to spread them. The Mexico City police (SSC-CDMX) recommends not accepting requests from strangers, thinking before sending photos or messages, and blocking and reporting threatening messages (Azteca Noticias, 6 March 2025). As a general rule, do not pay: keep the evidence and report it.

The FBI recorded in its 2025 report a total of 23,159 confidence or romance fraud complaints in the United States, with losses of US$929,287,469. These are US figures: we found no comparable official figure for Mexico.

  • At the hotel. Do not share your room number or photos of your passport with someone you do not know well.
  • On your devices. Do not lend your phone or share passwords.
  • In your plans. Tell someone you trust where you will be and with whom.

If someone needs your money before meeting you, they are not looking for you.

06A discreet alternative, with no exchanges

Premium Dating Mexico is not a sugar-dating platform. It is a private introduction service, mediated by an administrator, for adult men and women in Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara.

  • Nobody pays for a date. The service is free for women and there are no payments for meeting.
  • Verified identity. We ask for ID from the women who apply and from the men who register.
  • Consent first. Both people agree before there is any contact, and either can leave at any time.
  • Discretion. Photos are protected and data is handled under our privacy notice.

Frequently asked questions

Is sugar dating legal in Mexico for a foreigner?

Between consenting adults, dating or exchanging gifts is not a crime in itself, and Mexican law applies equally to visitors and residents. Relationships with anyone under 18, coercion and a third party profiting from another person’s sexual commerce (lenocinio and human trafficking) are crimes. This is general information, not legal advice; consult a lawyer.

What do I do if someone asks me for money up front?

Do not send it. The BBB and the FTC agree that you should never send money or sensitive data to someone you have not met in person. Cut contact, keep screenshots and report it to the platform; if you lost money, tell your bank.

How do I report a possible human trafficking situation?

Call the National Anti-Trafficking Line (800 5533 000), the anonymous report line 089 or 911 in an emergency, and do not confront anyone. Confirm the numbers before calling, because they can change.

Are dating apps safe for tourists in Mexico?

They can be, with precautions, but official alerts exist: in June 2025 the US Consulate in Guadalajara warned about tourists kidnapped after meeting people on dating apps. Meet in public places, tell someone your plan and leave if something does not feel right.
