Romantic getaway to Copper Canyon: Creel and Divisadero from Chihuahua

Copper Canyon is the best-known weekend plan in the Chihuahua sierra: a set of canyons reached by road or train, with towns such as Creel and viewpoints such as Divisadero. This guide stays on the Chihuahua side, from the capital. We do not cover the Sinaloa side (El Fuerte, Los Mochis), because that state has a higher travel advisory. Transport details and fares change: confirm everything with the operators.

In short

  • From Chihuahua City to Creel it is about 260 km, about 3 h 40 min by road, with a 147-peso toll according to N+ (July 2026).
  • The Chepe Express does not leave from Chihuahua City: it runs between Los Mochis and Creel. There is also the Chepe Regional; confirm routes and schedules.
  • To sleep, Creel (Best Western The Lodge at Creel, Hotel Cascada Inn) or Divisadero (Hotel Divisadero Barrancas, Mansión Tarahumara, Posada Barrancas Mirador).
  • Chihuahua carries a Level 3 US State Department advisory, which also limits US government employees’ travel to the canyon; read it before you decide.

01Before you plan: the travel advisory, stated plainly

The US State Department listed Chihuahua at Level 3, “reconsider travel” due to crime and kidnapping, on the advisory page we consulted (issue date 6 September 2024). Check the current advisory before you travel.

The same page said US government personnel could not travel to other areas of Chihuahua, including Copper Canyon; that restriction may have changed. A Mexico Travel & Leisure piece from April 2026 describes the Copper Canyon route as safe and spectacular and advises against driving in southern Chihuahua; that is a travel outlet’s view, not an official advisory.

We do not promise safety. If you go, do it in daylight, with reservations made, share your itinerary with someone you trust and check the current advisory. If you are not comfortable, the rest of the city offers cultural dates and half-day escapes.

A good plan starts by knowing what the current advisory says, not by ignoring it.

02How to get there from Chihuahua City

There are three main ways. The details are dated: confirm before you leave.

  • By road. About 260 km and about 3 h 40 min to Creel, with a 147-peso toll, according to N+ (15 and 18 July 2026). A tusbuenasnoticias note (September 2025) also describes road access.
  • By bus. There is bus service between Chihuahua and Creel; confirm lines and schedules with the terminals.
  • By train. The Chepe Express runs between Los Mochis and Creel, with stops such as Bahuichivo and Divisadero, so it does not leave from Chihuahua City. The Chepe Regional, according to Wikipedia, covers another stretch; verify routes, days and reservations with the operator.

If you would rather not drive, a bus there and back on the same departure day spares you worrying about the road home.

03Where to sleep: Creel and Divisadero

The hotels appear in travel directories; rooms, services and prices change, so verify on the hotel’s own site or the booking site you prefer.

  • Creel. The Best Western The Lodge at Creel (López Mateos 61) and the Hotel Cascada Inn are two options; Creel is the most practical town as a base.
  • Divisadero. Hotel Divisadero Barrancas, Mansión Tarahumara and Posada Barrancas Mirador are near the viewpoint, with canyon views. Room counts differ between sources, so we do not give them.

Sleeping on the canyon rim gives sunrise views; sleeping in Creel makes dinner and evening walks easier. Book ahead in high season.

04A sample weekend

This is a simple, flexible plan, not a guaranteed itinerary.

  • Friday. Leave Chihuahua early and reach Creel with time for lunch and a walk around town.
  • Saturday. Visit a viewpoint, such as Divisadero, in daytime and in layers; the sierra can be cold in winter.
  • Sunday. A calm breakfast and an early return so you arrive in daylight.

Going as a couple or with someone you trust is part of the plan: this is not a first date. If you have only just met, start with a coffee in the city.

05If you would rather be introduced

Some people prefer to meet someone before planning a trip. A mediated introduction, with consent from both sides, lets you begin with a conversation already agreed.

Premium Dating Mexico is a private introduction service mediated by the administrator: it is free for women, nobody pays for a meeting, identities are verified and photos are protected. Learn more on the Chihuahua page.

Venues, hours and events change, so confirm everything with each place before you go. We have no relationship with any of the places mentioned, and the listings are not paid. The information comes from N+ (July 2026), tusbuenasnoticias (September 2025), Mexico Travel & Leisure (April 2026), Wikipedia and the US State Department (page with an issue date of 6 September 2024).
