First-date restaurants and cafés in Veracruz: seafood, terraces and cafés
A first date in Veracruz has a natural menu: café lechero in the morning, seafood at midday, ice cream at sunset and a dinner with music. This guide gathers places mentioned by travel guides and media, with the date of each source when it is old, and explains how to choose between the Centro and Boca del Río. It is a reference list, not a ranking: we have no relationship with any venue and we include no prices, because they change. Before you go, confirm that the restaurant is still open, its hours and whether it takes reservations.
In short
- For a daytime first date: a café lechero in the Centro (La Parroquia, since 1808, or the Gran Café del Portal, facing the Zócalo) and a short walk to the Malecón.
- For seafood: Boca del Río concentrates seafood restaurants and terraces; Mexico Travel & Leisure cites Villa Rica as its reference for huachinango a la veracruzana in the area.
- For dinner with music and a view: Los Portales (Centro) and Boca del Río restaurants with terraces; several lists date from 2018 to 2022, so confirm they are still open.
- If you want calm for conversation, avoid places with a DJ or very loud music, and book early in the evening or on a weekday.
01How to choose for the kind of first date
Before booking, think about what you want to happen: an hour of coffee, a lunch or a dinner. With that, the choice gets easier.
- Coffee, by day. The lightest format. The Centro cafés are close to the Zócalo and the Malecón, so you can walk afterward.
- Seafood lunch. Works well on a weekend or a weekday afternoon, at a terrace or a place with a view. Boca del Río has most of the offer.
- Dinner with music. The Portales have live music, but expect noise; if you want to talk, ask for a table with some distance from the musicians.
- Avoid places with a DJ and a very crowded terrace if it is the first time you meet.
Book ahead on weekends and in high season, and ask whether the place takes reservations before you go.
A good first date in the port needs three things: being able to talk, something to see and an easy exit.
02In the Centro: cafés, Portales and seafood
These references come from travel guides and media lists; several are years old, so confirm they are still open.
- Gran Café de la Parroquia. Mexico Travel & Leisure (March 2026) and ZonaTuristica place it facing the Malecón and describe it as a port café since 1808, known for café lechero and for the ritual of tapping the glass to call whoever pours the milk. The sources do not agree on the address or the hours, so confirm both.
- Gran Café del Portal. According to an LTVer list (published in 2018 and modified in 2021), it is across from the Zócalo and the aquarium, with a bohemian atmosphere and café lechero.
- Los Portales. According to the Camino Real blog, there are restaurants under the Zócalo arches with son jarocho, mariachi and trovadores, and dishes such as arroz a la tumbada, pescado a la veracruzana and camarones a la diabla.
- Villa Rica Diligencias. The LTVer list (2018, modified in 2021) places it across from the Zócalo, with octopus, shrimp and fish, views and live music; it describes it as suited to special occasions and not cheap.
- Marisquería El Mono Blanco. Mexico Travel & Leisure (March 2026) cites it for seafood cocktails in the Centro.
- Nevería Güero. The same guide mentions it for ice cream flavors such as queso añejo, mamey and tejocote: a simple stop after coffee or lunch.
For a first date, the Centro has the advantage that if the conversation goes well you can keep walking toward the Malecón.
03In Boca del Río: seafood and terraces
Boca del Río, about 8 km south of the center, is the area associated with seafood restaurants. These are the references we found; confirm they are still open.
- Marisquería Villa Rica. Mexico Travel & Leisure (March 2026) cites it as the best option for huachinango a la veracruzana in the metro area. An LTVer list (2020, modified in 2022) also mentions Villa Rica Mocambo across from the beach, with live music.
- Toscana Pasta e Pizza. According to Reservándonos (published in 2025, modified in August 2026), it is in the Villa Rica neighborhood in Boca del Río, with an open space surrounded by greenery, live music on weekends, pasta and artisanal pizzas.
- La Estancia Argentina. Reservándonos describes it as an elegant restaurant with views of the port, jazz and a terrace, and a 2020 LTVer list places it at Plaza Andamar; the sources differ on the exact area, so confirm the address.
- Harbors Veracruz. According to Reservándonos, it is a large oceanfront terrace with a DJ and a social bar, serving seafood and grilled meats. A lively place, more for a group outing than a quiet first conversation.
- Il Veneziano. The LTVer list (2018, modified in 2021) describes it as elegant, with a terrace and facing the boulevard; the Camino Real page on Tripadvisor (2026) includes it among nearby restaurants.
Promotions and prices mentioned in older lists may have changed: we do not give them here.
04What to order if it is your first time in Veracruz
Mexico Travel & Leisure (March 2026) highlights these dishes. Ordering them to share is a natural way to start a conversation.
- Huachinango a la veracruzana. Fish with tomato, olives and capers.
- Pescado a la talla. Whole grilled fish; the guide says it is best enjoyed in Boca del Río.
- Ceviche veracruzano and vuelve a la vida. A cocktail of octopus, shrimp, oyster and clam.
- Tostadas de jaiba. Made with blue crab.
- Arroz a la tumbada. The Camino Real blog mentions it as a typical dish of the Portales.
If you have an allergy or a dietary restriction, tell the server before ordering: seafood is the base of many dishes.
05Before and after the meal: coffee, ice cream and a walk
A two-hour first date works better with a short plan: a café lechero, a walk and, if the chemistry is good, a meal.
- Coffee in the morning in the Centro, with the Zócalo a few steps away.
- Sunset walk along the Malecón, about five minutes on foot from the Zócalo according to the Malecón website; the site recommends sunrise and sunset.
- Ice cream afterward, for example at Nevería Güero.
- Music: danzón in the Zócalo or at the Plazuela de la Campana can close the afternoon; days and hours vary by source, so confirm before you go.
If the afternoon stretches out, agree on how you will get back before leaving, especially if you dine in Boca del Río, about 8 km from the Centro.
06A dinner as a couple, or meeting someone with discretion
A good table in the port, with a view or with music, is one of the best ways to start getting to know someone: there is something to talk about and no rush.
If you prefer not to leave it to chance and want someone to introduce you to a person with a verified identity and the same intentions, that is exactly the role of an introduction service.
Premium Dating Mexico is a private introduction service mediated by the administrator: it is free for women, nobody pays for a meeting, identities are verified and photos are protected. If you would rather have someone arrange it with discretion and verified identities, start on the home page.
Venues change and several of our sources date from different years, so confirm hours, reservations and that the place is still open before you go. We have no relationship with any of the places mentioned, and the listings are not paid.
